The Offer
No direct link to offer, sent out via e-mail. Doesn’t really look targeted as you don’t need to show the offer and it must be opened in branch anyway?

- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
SimplyChecking has no monthly fees to worry about
Early Account Termination Fee
Account needs to be kept open for 180 days otherwise you forfeit the bonus and have to pay a fee.
Our Verdict
Seems like a good bonus if it’s actually open to all, if it’s not open to all then I’m not entirely sure how they determine eligibility. I’ll add this to our best bank bonus page if it does turn out to be available without restriction. Feel free to share your experiences in the comments below.

I think this one is active again. My sister received a mailer the other day. The bonus amount is $250 this time. Looks to be in branch only.

Opened today in branch. Showed the banker the email and he knew what I was talking about. Didn’t go in depth with the email, but I had it on my phone, so he probably figured it was sent to me. The email said the deal expired 30 April, the mailer I received said it expired 30 March, so didn’t mention the mailer, lol. He did mention that I had a profile from the Wells Fargo transition, but other than that real easy and straightforward.
I opened a Wells Fargo account in October in the same branch and I was in line to meet with that same banker. But then the manager came out and I opened with him. Glad to avoid the “you look familiar, didn’t you just open an account for a bonus?”
Tried to open in East Lansing Branch today — was told the offer was to certain existing flagstar customers only and they wouldn’t let me open one. 100% legit potential customer, my permanent home and business address are within 5miles of that branch. What’s weird is that the fine print here says “new personal checking account” Not sure who they are supposed to be targeting with this — maybe people who have only savings/IRA/investment or business accounts but not a personal checking account? I’m going to try again in a week or two at the Okemos branch where I know the manager from networking groups and see if I get better results.
Got a $300 flyer in the mail today with my name on it 🙂 Yippee!
Does anyone try this deal?
Lansing Branch said they are aware of the promotion but you have to bring in the mailed flyer with your name and address on it to get the bonus. She said it was targeted.
Interesting, thanks.
William Charles Just to follow up on this, after I received the email I also received a flyer in the mail that specifically states “Bring this in and open a SimplyAccess Checking account….” So it does appear to be targeted.
I originally had a Wells Fargo account that was transitioned to Flagstar at the end of last year. I closed the account but apparently am still registered to receive promotional offers. I would be more than happy to give my flyer to someone as I am pretty far away from the nearest branch. However, it has my specific name on it and even tells me which branch to visit to open my account. So I am afraid it wouldn’t work for others.
Stopped by a branch in Ann Arbor, CSR told me they didn’t know about the promo (though I wasn’t the first to ask about it), and was waiting for information from regional management. He even suggested that it could be fake, after showed me a targeted mailer which is what he was aware of.
I had Wells Fargo account that was tranistioned to Flagstar back in Nov after Flagstar bought out Wells Fargo in my area. I had my account for a week, then closed it. I got a mailer and email, assuming since they had my information. I didn’t see anyhting about past account holders in the T&C. Gonna give it a try next week.
I wonder if you have opened one of these accounts in the past if you would be ineligible. It’s been close for about a year so maybe I would re-qualify as a new customer, supposing this isn’t targeted.
