Worked great in Japan but for a savings of $10 it almost makes sense to just pay the extra cost in case something happens

Absolutely, considering you probably have a credit card that has a decent multiplier for travel to begin with.

Just a friendly reminder that your gc can be stolen without any compensation. I have a few hotels.com gift card that were redeemed by other people. I never disclosed the card information to anyone else. Hotels.com said it was my fault. All the communication went nowhere, even if you file bbb. They just don’t care about people.

I have had nothing but problems with hotels.com. had a hotel that gave us the wrong room. In addition, it was dirty, the AC didn’t work, and the hotel mislabeled its amenities. The hotel refused to accommodate us, so we cancelled our reservation and went somewhere else. Hotels.com wouldn’t do anything about it. Had to dispute the credit card and they were fighting tooth and nail. I wasn’t even asking for a refund – I was just asking for a hotels.com credit to use somewhere else. Never again.

Last summer I used some cards a few years old in Riga, Latvia. Some, not all, of the prices of hotels were comparable to the lowest price on the internet. However, those gift cards were 20% off. This one is less than 9%.

This hotels.com gift cards are difficult to redeem for stays outside the US. Most of the hotels outsed the US on hotels.com are a no-go using thise gift cards. I ended up selling all my hotels.com gift cards. YMMV……..

Huh? That’s how I have always used them. (In Italy.) No issue whatsoever. I just search hotels or B&Bs that allow “Pay Now” bookings, make the reservation, and pay in advance, applying the gift card. In reality, a gift card is just a pre-payment to Hotels.com that you can use on any “Pay Now” booking.

If a lodging doesn’t allow paying in advance, then that’s a different story.

Most hotels in South America would not accept paying in advance. YMMV…

I remember the days when these were regularly 20-25% off, rarely see above 15% now

Yeah, I used to be able to use a 10% off code with hotels.com and then pay with deeply discounted gift cards. It made that website worth the hassle. These small gift card discounts and the lack of 10% codes makes the site far less useful. I’d also warn people that probably that you can use the gift cards at only anout a third of th hotels on the websit. It’s basically the “dumb” properties that pay hotels.com a big commission.

You can still get significant discounts with price matching.
