[Expired] [Now Live] Office Depot/Max: $10 Instant Discount with $300 Visa Gift Card Purchase [11/18-11/24] + Free Home Mini!?

Deal has expired, view more Office Depot/Max deals by clicking here.

Update 11/24/18: Mini deal has been extended through 11/24! Hat tip to reader Randy

Update: Office Depot/Max is offering a free Google home mini if you spend $150 or more. I’m sure it’s supposed to exclude gift cards, but some readers have successfully gotten the mini for free as well. YMMV as always.

The Offer

Direct Link to offer

  • Get a $10 instant discount on the purchase of $300 in Visa gift cards.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 11/18/18 – 11/24/18
  • Offer valid in store on Visa gift cards only
  • One offer per transaction
  • The Visa Gift Card is issued by MetaBank®, Member FDIC, pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. Valid Only in the U.S. and No Cash Access or Recurring payments. Card can be used everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted in the U.S.
  • Discount comes off at register

Our Verdict

The $200 Visa cards come with a $6.95 fee and the $100 cards come with a $5.95 fee. Best deal for most is to buy two $200 cards to rack up INK points. The $10 discount will mostly offset the fees. Visa Everywhere cards have worked in the past as well (in case your store is out of ordinary Visas).

Looks like you can only do one per transaction (let us know if you test that), but can do many of these in separate transactions, according to the terms. Other Visa gift card deals can be found here.

Tip of the hat to Nick at Frequentmiler

I’m just getting into the VGC > Serve game. At Family Dollar, are the registered hard coded to have a daily store limit of $500 in loads, or does it vary store to store?

HmoobMikah
HmoobMikah

I’m just starting out the serve game too. My new serve cards should be coming in today. Can you tell me your experiences loading vgc into serves? What did the cashier ask you when you’re loading your serve card? Did they take a look at your card you were using to load them?

Saturn
Saturn

This is very YMMV. I have used several FDs on the same day with 500 VGCs. I know that some regional FDs will only allow cash. You can do a test run knowing that you can always fall back on Walmart.

The deal will probably include the Everywhere cards, reducing the fees further.

HmoobMikah
HmoobMikah

Did you ask for split transactions for the 500 VGCs? 2x$250 vgc? How do you go about asking that question without raising any alarms?

Hodor

I’ve had Serve cards for a few months, but haven’t used them. I just got a bunch of VGCs at Staples and used most of them to pay health insurance premiums (no fee). I just purchased another batch with a plan to load Serve.

Rowan
Rowan

I don’t have any direct experience with loading at Family Dollar but you might want to look into some reports I recall seeing here and on Reddit about issues with cards being emptied without properly moving the funds to your Serve and some sort of specific procedure that was outlined to resolve it…

HmoobMikah
HmoobMikah

I remembered reading on /r/churning about not leaving the store until you checked if the funds were deposited to your serve account. Definitely will keep a look out for that.

If you transaction fails, you have to swipe the gebit one more time to get the refund back on it. Just request your receipt.

I’ve never had this issue.

Gerald
Gerald

I’ve never tried to load more than one card per store per day. In my area, it’s very much YMMV regarding FDs that will allow loads from debit cards at all. I have my two regular FDs and they recognize me when come in.

OD/OM accountants saw VGC, Sharpie, and Post-Its sales were being lost to the Staples promotion and had to take immediate action!

Just in Time! My INK will catch fire next week. LOL

What do you mean “catch fire”? I’m wondering if I missed an important piece of news about changes to INK.

Pretty sure they just mean their Ink cards have been used heavily lately with all the great Visa gift card deals at Staples & Office Depot lately.

I just maxed out the $50k annual cap on the Ink+ office supply store bonus for the first time even though my account just renewed in August! I guess it’s time to grab the Ink Cash for another $25k of OSS spending…

how much did you ms per month?

Amex Simplycash didin’t award 5% after July at OD/OM so be aware

Did you max out the bonus category before then? All my purchases were 5X. The cashback gets credited 2 statements after purchaaes.

it certainly did.

It did for me.

I just checked my 27th Oct trx which shows 5% reward earned (not credited yet).
In past I had same confusion before I figure out lag of approximate 2 months to get reward credited on Simplycash account statement.

Great info to know! I’m looking to open SimplyCashPlus next year when I max out CIC.

Oh no, they found the sweet spot with these $10 discounts, the days of instant $20 are long gone. I have a feeling $15 discount might not even make a return this holiday season.

Jeff
Jeff

Sweet. $12k left to max out my Ink+ for my cardmembership year. Of course I’ll miss half of next week being gone for Thanksgiving. Can’t they do this on a non holiday week!

How do people usually liquidate these low denomination cards?

Hydrochloric acid works pretty well for me.

I prefer to book a trip to a Volcano using the sweet UR points I’ve accumulated. Then, throw the stack of GCs right into the fire!

I prefer a chlorinated solvent. Always the chance of knocking yourself out.

Does purchasing gc count towards meeting Citi minimum spending?

Yes.

How about meeting Chase minimum spending?

Andrew

Yes.

Do all visa gift cards work for minimum spend or the vanilla reloadable ones don’t?

Andrew
Andrew

For Citi and Chase all should count. Amex is the only issuer that won’t count gift cards towards MSR that I’m aware of.

If anybody becomes desperate to liquidate their cards… just use it to buy something at Walmart and return it. I happened to buy something with a GC and they gave me cash back. Just a thought…happy Thanksgiving!!John 3:16

MCT
MCT

It takes Walmart time and resources because of your inability to liquidate the cards that you bought. You shouldn’t have bought them in the first place. You are a real hypocrite with the John 3:16 stuff.

escot
escot

quite. I’ll call his John 3:16 and raise him Matthew 7:12 (the golden rule) and Galations 6:7 (sowing & reaping)

Dan

yeah, that ending of their every post is just annoying.

COBOLCODERUSEALLCAPS

Yes, we should all just reply back with quotes from the Satanic Bible like

“He who turns the other cheek is a cowardly dog, for self-preservation is the highest law”.

Jack
Jack

Not cool to put it on a store to do that. I don’t MS and only buy discounted cards to use organically but I wouldn’t do that.

I tried once to buy a money order at Walmart and they shot me down using a VCG, even tried to have my regular debit card in hand over it. Looked like fun with everyone else doing it but I didn’t have the luck starting out late in the game.

COBOLCODERUSEALLCAPS

Ahh the good ol’ switcheroo. You don’t cover the card with the real one, but take the real one out and immediately put it back into your wallet, and take your vgc out when ready to pay.

Is that for me being lazy?

Elmer
Elmer

Not at all – that was for Mr. John 3:16 and his Walmart returns process being lazy – it isn’t hard to find multiple uses for a $200 VGC that don’t involve returns scamming.

I just purchased a few of these. If you get $300 or $400 worth of GCs, they’ll both be 1% fee after the $10 off.

For anyone who isn’t already aware, I’ve been successfully using Style Everywhere and Grocery Everywhere cards at WM (both Super & Neighborhood Markets). Dining Everywhere also works fine at NM’s & a Safeway I tried but I don’t have a recent dp on those at regular Walmart’s.

Shawn D
Shawn D

Dining Everywhere has worked for me in the past at Super WM near me. I usually go for GE since I can probably use it at a grocery store for a money order if unsuccessful at WM, but GE, DE and SE have all worked 100% of time for me.

Mark
Mark

One should be really careful with the Everywhere cards. They are unreliable and getting stuck is not real exciting.

Any comments on using my od/om rewards card when making the purchase? They said i could get 2% back on my gift card purchases.

Steve
Steve

Yes, you can get rewards for GC purchases, but there is a tight limit. I believe that the limit is $4.

I also got the free Google Mini but had to ask for it.

HmoobMikah

Just stopped by Office Depot a few hours ago, and they didn’t give me a free google mini. Maybe they didn’t know about it, or its YMMV. If I knew that they were giving these out, I would’ve asked about it.
