[Expired] Office Depot/Max: $10 Instant Discount with $300 Visa Gift Card Purchase

Deal has expired, view more Office Depot deals here.

The Offer

There’s an unadvertised Visa gift card deal at Office Depot/Max:

  • Get a $10 instant discount on the purchase of $300 in Visa gift cards.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 10/21/18 – 10/27/18
  • Limit one per household/business
  • Discount comes off at register
  • In-store only; subject to availability

Our Verdict

The $200 Visa cards come with a $6.95 fee and the $100 cards come with a $5.95 fee. Best deal for most is to buy two $200 cards to rack up INK points. The $10 discount will mostly offset the fees.

Similar deal at Staples as well. That one has some people reporting that it works on multiples in a single transaction; not sure how Office Depot/Max deal will work. Last time around, there was a glitch which was giving additional discounts for some, unlikely it’ll happen again, but who knows.

Hat tip to reader Donn and thanks for the image

Can somebody confirm if the Visa Everywhere Dining still work for MO at WM? Card was declined at self service kiosk for regular purchase (paintbrushes). Normal VGC worked.

I feel like I used these to buy MO a few months ago but wondering if there are any recent DPs.

I came out 10 cents ahead with Grocery Everywhere $200 x2 today. Now to go liquidate at a grocery store and hope it’s still BAU.

I can confirm it took $10 off for two style anywhere at my od. However they tried to add 6% tax or $24 on each $400 purchase. I got a manager overide, but it was extra time and eyes, and I didn’t do a separate second transaction like I normally do.

This happened to me as well and they told me the manager was aware of the issue and gave me a business card for their tax exempt office. I left them a message but haven’t heard back yet.

Why would sales tax be applied to a gift card?

No idea but it keeps happening to me at my store in Maryland. I just avoided buying completely today

Is that ok to buy this to meet the minimum spending requirements of Chase? I know it’s a no-go for Amex.

Any DPs on liquidating these with Plastiq? In recent months, I’ve been unable to use these metabank cards for student loan or rent payments via Plastiq due to the MCC coding as cash-equivalents.

I don’t believe any prepaid visas are currently working on Plastiq

Maybe I’ll pop into my local OD for a few of these. It’s strange the closest OD to me is on the verge of being closed down (I’m friendly with the GM who told me this) and they only allow 1 GC Transaction per person per day. But one that’s 15 minutes away allows up to 5 or 10 transactions a day (can’t remember but I do know it’s 2k or 4K and can be multiple transactions).

Obviously it looks good for their sales. They said for GC sales they net 3-5% profit per GC sold for their stores sales numbers.

I need to meet minimum spending on an Amex card. I read that their RAT team isn’t counting Visa gift cards from Simon Mall towards min spend. I have some purchases to make at Costco and this would be perfect. Any data points for gift cards from OM/OD and Amex?

Not a good idea; the RAT squad has been known to close accounts for this exact reason.

Don’t do it. They wont necessarily close your card, they will just deny your bonus as they still want to collect the swipe fees. Happened to my brother.

OM/OD give L3 (exact purchase) data, which makes this a theoretical bad idea. In reality, if you cross the border with small spend, there’s a low likelihood any eyes will fall on your account. Crossing at exactly 505.95 or some variant might cause eyes to fall on.

Hope this helps give some guidelines to think about. No one can be exactly sure what will happen.

I met min spend on my amex biz plat partly with this promotion. I made probably 7k purchases in gift cards from OD.

It’s true that they will deny you if they find out, but they have to look at the account in order to find out.

The last time this promotion happened the charges on my card were ~365 each transaction, so didn’t look like gift cards on the surface.

If you REALLY value the MR, don’t do it. If you’re ok with the loss if it doesn’t work out… hit it up.

Would the grocery flavor of Everywhere cards work at regional grocers like Kroger, Hyvee, or Cub? I had always used the restaurants ones for Walmarts but hadn’t tested others.

Grocery Everywhere works at Kroger

None of the Walmarts in my area work anymore with the Everywhere cards, so for those wanting this new, and again lower deal, best to try one first to see. Don’t get stuck like many have with no place to use them accept certain dining places and so forth. Even thought the fashion ones would work at WM, but no go for me. Getting harder and harder to liquidate VGCs. No wonder MS type forums and blogs are drying up with less members and some sites have disappeared. If you don’t plan on ms’ing these, but actually using them for some spend, then just buy that retailer’s GC which has no fee. If the discount on VGC was like it used to be ($20), then it might be worth it, but seems those days are gone. Always think about your region and what works and what doesn’t. Some chains have locations in certain regions that are still friendly, while in another region the same chain has their own rules on liquidation.

@ed I tried to use my Visa Everywhere Dining at WM self checkout and it was denied. Do you know if these can still be used for MO?

The glitch has been fixed. No additional discount on top of what is advertised. Also, it works on Everywhere cards so basically it is a no fee purchase.

This is the LAST THING i need. Pure temptation in the face of a CIC already near 72% of CL. The last OD/OM similar MCGC offer has yet to be paid. I have other irons in the front burner at this time.
What is worse … I have to work in OD once a month .. Like tomorrow.
