[Expired] Office Depot/Max: Visa Gift Cards, Save $15 When You Buy $300 [8/25-8/31]

Deal has expired, view more Office Depot/Max deals by clicking here.

The Offer

  • Office Depot/Max stores are offering a $15 instant discount when you buy $300 in Visa gift cards.

The Fine Print

  • Discount applies at register
  • Valid 8/25 – 8/31/19
  • Purchase fees may apply

Our Verdict

Just last week they had this on Mastercard, and this week on Visa. Either purchase two $200 cards or one $200 and one $100. The variable load $20-$500 cards are cash only so won’t work. Normally you can do this deal multiple times in different transactions but YMMV based on cashier.

Nice to see this OM/OD deal return. $15 more than wipes out the activation fees. Make sure to use a credit card that earns at a high rate at office supply stores. Some people have an Amex Offer for $5 off $25 too.

Thanks to my friends Dave and Matt for sharing this one. If anyone has an image, please share and we’ll add it in (chuck@doctorofcredit.com).

Uh oh I’ve cycled my limits on 2 Chase cards (15k limit and 5k limit) 5+ times in the last 2 months. Also my total exposure with Chase is about 40% of Income. 🙁

do I run the risk of chase shutting down my accounts where I to buy $6000 in visa gc? would spread out over 20 purchases and 5 days.

Depends on your income level and available credit. If you have a $50k limit and $250k income, nope. If you have an $8k limit and $30k income can be suspicious but not guaranteed, more than likely fine

The fixed $200’s didn’t work for me. So, the cashier grabbed some variables and they worked just fine. This has been common at my local OD.

I picked up 2 $200’s and asked the clerk if these were on sale because, in the past, the fixed ones didn’t ring up properly. He rang them up and said the discount didn’t apply. So, he grabbed the variable $20–$200 ones and loaded $200 on each. The discount applied correctly. This was in the Pittsburgh, PA area.

Any tried the Everywhere Visa (fuel, style, grocery) and see if it will work with those ?

Mr.T

Yes, the Everywhere visa works, at least the Grocery and Dining ones. But most of the time they are not in stock in the store.Although, I had some Walmart’s reject them, if you are trying to buy MO’s.

I have never had a problem buying MO’s at WalMart with the Groceries Everywhere cards, which I have done dozens of times….including today!

SCORE!!! I just paid my final semester tuition of college using the MC gift cards getting 5 points per dollar with my INK cash card… now I have about $3k in flooring upgrades to do in my home…. time for another 15k in Ur points… by the way, the University of Texas accepts gift cards for tuition but charges 2.25% fee… still a net gain.

Oral Roberts University has no surcharge for paying tuition with CC. Been thankful for that for all 4 of my boys.

So ends up being more like about $5 saved after activation fees on $300 purchase? Seems like with the fees it’s hardly worth it.

Anthony

You’re right. Nobody should buy these.

Making a profit to earn 1500 valuable UR points per purchase. Yeah, totally not worth it.

Re- “The variable load $20-$500 cards are cash only so won’t work”

I’ve heard this before but I’ve been buying the $200 variables for years… zero issues ever. Are there real DPs on this or is this just legend? I’ve purchased in Norcal, north TX, and central TX… multiple locations at each.

William Charles

When Chuck says variable, I think he’s talking about the up to $500 variables not the $200 ones.

I haven’t seen a $20-500 variable in years.

Wondering if I can unload some of my MCGC purchased last week to purchase VGC this week? Worried about ease of use issues surrounding MCGC for BB reloads, etc.

I jokingly asked my cashier that today. It was a firm no.

I know they are super strict with the personal cards but how are they with buying GCs on their business cards? Does it code as GC?

Curmudgeon

I’d be interested to know as well. You could always buy one card and see how it posts on the statement. If they’re getting level 3 data it will appear on the statement or in the online transaction history with the full details.

My local OD did not allow to use credit card. Is there any official documentaiton from OD to show him it is OK to use credit card to purchase it?

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

Is there any that doesn’t? Usually if there’s a specific policy they’d have it in writing right?

kandd

I tried online chat. They cannot solve the problem. I guess I have to stop it. The od is the only one near home. Another one is about 40 minutes away.
🙁

James Bond

YMMV. It depends upon the store manager. Some store managers allow use of a credit card for VGCs and others not. Also, some store managers permit multiple purchases for the promotion and for some it is a no go.

Is there any card-linked program working in OfficeMax? Like Dosh, or Drop?

What are the top 3 credit cards for purchasing these and why?

Tried 2 diff stores today and appeared to be no limit. One store manager said he wanted to limit my cards per swipe to 5. I said how about just 2 per swipe. lol

Are all vgc @ office stores $6.95 fees? Thats rough. Ill pay more attention tomorrow.

MrObvious

The Everywhere cards are only $4.95.

Thx! Had a feeling I made a mistake here.

OD #2 is positioned mere steps from a former Burger King, now Paradise Gentlemen’s Club @ baymeadows and 95. You better believe I could have put those $2 bills per card x 10 cards to better use than vgc fees.
