office-depot

The Fine Print

  • Offer valid in store only 12/18/2016 until 12/24/2016.
  • Discount applied at register.
  • Limit of one per transaction
  • The Visa® Gift Card is issued by MetaBank®, pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. MetaBank; Member FDIC.

Our Verdict

The limit is one per transaction, so that is kind of annoying.

We aren’t sure if/what the limit is (likely to be 1 or 2) this is sometimes enforced and sometimes not (e.g it’s hardcoded by the register but some cashiers will let you do multiple transactions in a row). They usually carry both $200 & $100 gift cards, this deal is much better if it’s a limit of two per transaction as you lower your fees ($4.95-$6.95 per card). As always, make sure to use a credit card that earns at a high rate on office supply purchases.

Also a good chance to use the $20 off $100+ American Express offer. According to our Payments Workshop you can split between at least 8 credit cards at Office Depot & at least 6 at Office Max. That means even if the limit is 2 discounts per transaction you could split between 6 American Express cards with that offer, you’d save $120 in AmEx Offers and then another $30 from this discount. I doubt people have the offer on that many cards though.

They offered a similar promotion in November, so reading the comments there might be useful.

Will,

in my AMEX gold offer, I see “Get a one-time $20 statement credit by using your enrolled Card to spend a minimum of $100+ in one or more transactions in-store at Office Depot OfficeMax or online at officedepot.com by 12/31/2016”

Still have not paid off the last round when I went nuts and lost track in just a few days with a new CC = $150 CC statement credit on one card .I lost track of the fact twice as many transactions as previous promo to get there. I actually used more than one card those days.. Next thing I know, I am buying 5K of PO MO. I normally do not do 5K in a month – 6 weeks.

oops, you already said that, sorry…………

Adam

damnit I just bought a bunch at OD last fri to finish up spend on SimCash & Ink… if only they’d advertise these deals ahead of time :/ … I paid hundreds of $$$ extra for no reason. cause if I had waited until this week I’d have gotten a nice discount.

Ughh gosh another round. I’ve got about 6k left on my Ink+ to max out the 50k. Time to hit it up again, lol.

Jeff, may I ask how you are liquidating these Metabank VGCs? My PO dosent take them for MO’s, so I’ve been relegated to using them for regular spend only. Would be great to be able to max out my annual 50k Ink limit!

Jeff
Jeff

Most WM’s take them, but YMMV.

This seems like a solid deal. How many are you able to get in one pickup? Although it’s good for one per transaction, do you just checkout for multiple transactions?

It’s getting more difficult to liquidate these $200’s at the local WM. Only a few clerks will do split payments anymore without asking to see the cards. So I have to leave and hope the good clerks are working when I go back. I have learned some of their work hours too. It almost makes me feel like a stalker. It’s starting to get too time consuming and stressful doing this WM route. I have found other ways which have been written about already but those are just as unpredictable. Bluebird was awesome and there was no human interaction to ruin to ruin my MSing.

What area is that in where they want to see the VGCs?

Perfect, time to use my amex offer.

I miss the better promos of the past whem it was $20 per 300 and limits weren’t hardcoded. That made the travel time/expense worth it. But, at least this way, there’s not as much interest and I see cards on the racks throughout the week, whereas in the past they’d be gone on the first day.

Do metabank vgc auto drain when loading serve at Walmart or do you have to tell the cashier to do $200 swipes?

tbradnc
tbradnc

Just got back. LImit 1…. $398.95 for two $200s and $603.95 for three $200s.

dan
dan

why $603.95? after a $15 off, should it be $598.9?

dan
dan

or a bit less than $600?

tbradnc
tbradnc

Each $200 card has a $5.95 activation fee and the rebate is $15 off $300. So you have to pay 3 $.5.95 activation fees if you buy $600 in cards.

Tom
Tom

You mean even though you bought over $600, you only get $15 reduced instead of $30?

dan
dan

my # is based on a $4.95 fee

Jeff H

November promo was the same way. $15.00 max reduction in price. The big problem now is fixed $200.00 VCG compared to variable up to $200.00 VCG which has a $1.00 higher fee per card. AFIK, the up to $500.00 VCG is hard coded cash only.

Paul
Paul

Math seems off.

tbradnc
tbradnc

Correct, if you buy $600 you only get $15 off. Tried it both ways at the register.

Last time this was offered it was “limit 2 $15 off $300” so you got $30 off three $200 cards.

Ed
Ed

Actually the very last offer for visa was like this and therefore they had them in stock all week due to low demand on this lower offer $15 instead of $20. They haven’t had the $20 discount in a long time. And, one discount per person is hard coded.

Ed
Ed

1 offer per person is hard coded so this is very limiting and you’ll need to figure on whether the drive is worth it for you depending on how far away your local one is and how much you value your time to buy 2 cards and then liquidate. This is probably good for those who will actually gift them or do normal spend and just need some UR points or complete your Amex sync offer if you had one.

T
T

How is this hard coded to 1 person? Linked to cc?

Steve
Steve

The limit enforced by the register is 1 per transaction. But you can make another transaction and get the offer again, if the cashier allows you (some do, some don’t); also, some amount may require manager approval.

james
james

it is not hard coded, it never was. I bought $1200 in 3 transactions in one store today. Most of the time clerk will not allow it. I got lucky.

Jeff
Jeff

So buying 2 x $200 is the way to go. No $30 off 3 x $200. Sucks but OM is only 2 miles from me so still worth it for essentially free points in the end.

tbradnc
tbradnc

Well.. if you’re getting 5% back (aka Ink+, etc.) you’d earn a bit more buying 3 x $200. If you want to pay less than face value the only way to do that is 2 x $200.

In November OM/OD had a similar offer but with limit of 2 rebates so you could stack the $15 rebates by buying 3 x $200 and getting $30 off, plus whatever points you earned.
