[Deal Dead] OfficeMax/Depot: Spend $50 On Gift Cards (Including Mastercard), Save $10 (Easy $20+ Profit)

Update 4/6/17: This deal is now dead. It was supposed to go on until 4/15, but it was pulled prematurely. It’s certainly dead for Mastercards, and, as I understand, it’s dead for the other gift cards too.

The Offer

No direct link, only advertised in store via Laptop Travel

  • Save $10 instantly when you buy $50 or more in these select gift cards from office max/depot:
    • Mastercard
    • American Eagle Outfitters
    • Groupon
    • Fandango
    • Catherine’s

The Fine Print

  • Valid from 4/2/17 until 4/15/17
  • In store only
  • Discount applies at register
  • Limit of two

Our Verdict

This deal is pretty crazy as a $100 Mastercard will trigger two $10 credits. Probably best to purchase a $200 card if you’ve got a credit card that earns 5% on office supply stores.  Fees are $6.95 for the variable load $20-$200 gift cards. Let’s break down your profit:

  • Purchase $200 Mastercard for $206.95, minus $20 in credits ($186.95)
  • Earn 5% in rewards +$9.35
  • +$200 gift card

Total profit is $22.4. Deal is kind of insane, obviously the limit is only bound by your own imagination. Fee is $5.95 for the $100 cards, might be a better option if you don’t have a credit card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores.

officemax docs not sell MasterCards, nobody actually does, not even MC GC or prepaid. so please walk us through these scheme again, buying what? from whom? and paying for that with what? thanks

Chuck

Maybe it’s store-dependent, but many people are able to buy $50 or $100 or $200 Mastercard gift cards at Office Max/Depot.

You buy the Mastercard gift card for yourself.

You pay with your Chase INK card for 5x.

NinjaX
NinjaX

i seriously have no idea why you bothered responding to that…

Chuck

I assumed it was a newbie, but who knows, maybe it’s a troll 🙂

While not a true 5% card, I will be using First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO) Absolute Rewards Visa since I do not have the Chase business cards such as INK.
I have alerted FNBO that I may make multiple purchases on same card multiple times. Last Christmas when I did that, there were no credit card approval issues.

I hear that OD MGCs are issued by US Bank. Will there by any problem liquidating them at USPS through MO?

Brian
Brian

I was able to drain them at USPS last week. 2×200 twice.

I think the more important stuff on US Bank MGC is fraud

Only banccorp vanilla ones have worked at the USPS for a while now. You can use them at walmart

What’s your source for USBank MCGCs not working at USPS? All the DPs I’ve seen say that they work just fine, and that the only USBank GCs that don’t work right at USPS are USBank VGCs.

If you look above at Brian’s DP, he says he was able to drain $800 of USBank MCGC’s just last week.

Had no issue purchasing USPS MO. Thanks DOC for the post!

That is what I had read on flyertalk – if they work good to know!

Drained my last one at USPS this morning – thanks fellas…glad to be wrong!

No to get some more today!

Wow…this is an excellent opportunity. Does the register automatically deduct the $10 twice for a 100+card?

Limit of 2…per transaction?

Jeff H
Jeff H

I have a different opinion on the calculation. The deal is save 10 on 50 or more. So each transaction will give you a max of 10 off. For a 200 card you pay 196.95. But you can do the deal again.

Kyle
Kyle

Well come to back to reality and you’ll see people actually paid $186.95 for $200s. The limit was 2 offers per transaction.

TomTX
TomTX

Well, you are wrong. I got a single $100 card and it took off $20 at the register automatically.

I just got back from OM – confirmed that a $200 fixed MCGC is $186.95, I know the manager there (from previous MS trips) and he individually rung up 20 of the MCGC for me, what a great morning

CM

Nice! I only had the balls for 5 at a time so far. Each checkout takes a looong time, BTW.

Did you do them all on a single Ink? I’m a bit concerned that transactions will start declining at one point.

bob
bob

jeez, and i felt like a tool buying 2 of them (separately) with different CC’s. One each with Ink and a Simplycash. I have 4 OM’s between me and my home, tho, so i can avoid wearing out my welcome if i hit 2-3 each day on the commute home.

chaseaholic

has anyone else confirmed that this actually works?

not on the online ad.

Saw Michael’s comment above, still skepticalhave to wait til they open but otherwise going to be a fun day today.

does the ‘Limit of two’ enforce? Anyone can repeat this in multiple-transactions?

Jeff H

I tried 2x$200 MCGC. Only $20 instant credit. Backed sale off to 1x$200 = $186.95 sale.
Friendly store crew allowed 5 purchases. All net purchase $186.95 each.
I was able to purchase 2X$500 Western Union MO at Spartan owned Grocery store.

CAUTION: PIN number is INSIDE the MCGC package. Last four numbers of card will not process as a PIN unless you telephone and change it.

This works exactly as described in the post, the same way every time they run this promo, which has been multiple times a year. It has been tried and tested repeatedly.

Discount did not come off at register in OM where that particular location is going out of business. Should that matter? I showed picture of in-store ad from laptop travel, but didn’t get me any further. Thoughts?

Promotions seem to never apply to stores that are going out of business. You’ll have to find another store, unfortunately

Hey Doc,

Question: the only thing I use VGC for is to pay for Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthcare. They allow debit card but not credit card for payment (I had been using the Swagbucks VGC to pay previously but as of February Blue Cross won’t take those for some reason (d.p.).

VGCs from Office Depot still work to pay Blue Cross Blue Shield as they code as Debit. Do you know if these Mastercard GC’s would qualify as a Debit card?

I need solutions as I’m falling behind on payments!! (partially due to not being able to use CC…but mainly because a perfectly healthy under 35 man who has never hit his deductable ever has to pay over $500/mo in healthcare now…no penalties from BCBS yet but who knows about the fines from Obamacare (otherwise known Abomination-Care).

Homer
Homer

These are debit cards. And don’t blame anyone but yourself for not paying insurance bills on time because you wanted to use VGCs. That isn’t Obama or Trump’s fault.

NinjaX
NinjaX

honestly, all the words you used in ur post was not necessary except for the question “Mastercard GC’s qualify as a Debit card?”. The answer is yes. why wouldnt it? you use VGC like a debit right? altho MC GC always causes problems for certain vendors. YMMV.

carl wilson
carl wilson

I wanted to add the BCBS details because Healthcare bills are a great use of VGC or MGC: Heatchare doesnt code as bonus category as far as I know and, for some reason, some major insurance companies like BCBS don’t accept credit card.

Here’s a free Billion Dollar Idea for B-Team Card issuers like US Bank or Capital One: come up with a card with 2X or 3X Points on all Healthcare purchases. With the costs of Abomination Care they would absolutely clean up and maybe even catch up with Chase/AMEX for new Card signups LOL!!

NinjaX
NinjaX

yea. i mean thats why you by GCs w/ CC and pay bills for cat bonus. but regardless, MC is the worst altho its still a debit card like everyone said. I try to avoid it. hacked and causes problems. VGC is the best.

stacker
stacker

My insurance doubled under the unaffordable careless act so your not the only one.

Chuck

Carl, they should work the same as VGC but there’s no guarantee until you try one.

D.P.

MGC did not work for direct BCBS payment. McaFee Newegg $50 Rebate Visa did work however

I just got back from OD and this works as advertised. I bought five $200 MCGC in seperate transactions for $186.95 each.

It is $20 per transaction – would have to ring them up seperate

It’s different at different OD. Two of them only gave $10/card, no matter the card value. Then I found one that did $20 per $100 card. Who knows…

Split payment to combine with Android Pay Amex Offer? Will the register let you split between Android and a physical credit card?

youre going into a territory of YMMV and super friendly cashiers dude…

On previous promotions like this, my OM staff allowed split payments as long as you give specific step by step instructions before they ring up the sale.

Do these cards have pins associated and/or can I load them to a Serve account?

Jesse
Jesse

Nevermind, looks like you’d have to use the Change Payment method.

Anony Mouse
Anony Mouse

You can load them to Serve online or through the Serve app up to $200/day and $1000/month, however, a lot of DPs indicate that this will eventually lead to a Serve account shutdown.

Siv
Siv

Hey I have an active Serve One VIP card. How do I load the $100 MC gift cards online? Thanks!

Anony Mouse
Anony Mouse

Login to americanexpress.com/serve, ‘Link Credit/Debit Card’, then load Serve balance from linked debit card. Your Serve account will get shut down if you abuse this feature. AMEX would prefer that you load serve at Walmart versus loading online or through the mobile app. I’ve only done $400 (2 loads) and everything is fine so far, but YMMV.

I wish these were VGC instead of Mastercards. I understand these do not have a PIN and that can be a problem at some stores if you’re trying to buy MO. Some grocery stores only accept PIN debit transactions. If these do have a PIN or one can be activated by calling, please correct me.

CtownBin
CtownBin

Yes, these cards DO have a PIN. They are usually written on the inside of the package. Every so often, the PIN is not written there. If that happens to you, call the number on the back of the card to set the PIN to whatever you want.

Terri Clark
Terri Clark

I am pretty sure they do have a pin, I have occasionally bought MC when my grocery store was out of VGC. They were a little more difficult to unload but not to the point that I would pass the deal up. I haven’t bought them from OD before though.

Beth
Beth

I just bought 10 $200 cards in 10 different transactions with $20 off each card. They all have pins inside on a slip of paper.
I have had issues with fraud using these cards before so recommend liquidate asap, if not save the receipt and the packaging and if they are hacked you’ll eventually get your money back.
I chose to get to my friendly grocery store and buy money orders on my way home.

Eric
Eric

You used 10 different Visa gc in 1 trip and the CS rep didn’t bat an eye? I’m just curious, which grocery store was this?

As others have stated there’s a known fraud risk with some MGCs issued by USB… If you can’t drain these fast than don’t hoard them.

CtownBin
CtownBin

Do you know if it’s possible to register them online in your name, would that protect it from fraud if you can’t drain them yet?

Anony Mouse
Anony Mouse

Not necessarily. That would only offer you protection if the fraudster was trying to use the card for an online transaction. They could still clone the card by writing its card number/expiration date/CVV to a card with a blank magnetic strip and running it as signature/credit, and to do that, they wouldn’t need a name, billing address, or billing zip code.

Evan
Evan

I can understand how the can get the card number, but how would they clone it without having the physical card?

NinjaX
NinjaX

evan, sounds like you dont know how smart these guys are. but regardless just drain it asap. thats all.

MoreSun
MoreSun

The latest drained MasterCard prepaid article I could find was from 2014. Are there recent cases of fraud? (I’m getting a large amount but won’t be using them for a couple months so now I’m wondering if there is cause for concern. I could turn them into Marriott gift cards -my large charge- but that sounds less secure to me.)

Bob
Bob

Someone already tried to activate my card before it was purchase apparently. You can always get your money back by them sending you a replacement card, but it’s too much energy/time you have to spend. Once I get the replacement card, I’m going to load them into Amazon so I don’t have to worry about any unauthorized charges.

Evan
Evan

What do you mean they tried to activate it before you purchased?

Bob
Bob

I called us bank prepaid card customer service and they said someone tried to register the card online before the card was even purchased so that was why the card is locked.

CtownBin
CtownBin

Yes, there are many recent cases with these specific cards. The last time OD/OM ran a promo with these, 2 out 42 of the cards I bought were compromised, a high percentage IMO. Meanwhile, I’ve bought thousands of Metabank GCs and have never had ONE compromised.

Eric
Eric

Are you saying that you’ve bought over $1 million worth of Metabank Visa gc? Did you buy MO with all of those and deposit them all in the same bank?

CtownBin
CtownBin

Well, these are $200 cards so that would mean 5000 cards…If I had to guess, based on quick calculation, I’m about half way there. But I’m talking over many years here, I usually get 100 cards per promo and OM used to run these promos more often, so it adds up fast. Never mind the ones I’ve bought during other promos at other stores. The truth is, I’m small-time compared to many of the people here, many people can get WAY more than 100 in a week.

As for liquidation- most were liquidated into Bluebird/Serve, since I only got banned from those on Doomsday of 1/8/16 which isn’t that long ago relatively. Since then, it’s been MOs mostly, purchased at a local grocery store and deposited into 2-3 different accounts. As long as you don’t deposit them into banks you have important stuff with- ESPECIALLY Chase, NEVER deposit there- then it’s totally fine.

Eric
Eric

I was thinking of the $500 ones in the grocery store (2000 X $500 = $1 million). I don’t think I’ve ever shopped in Office Max before as there are none in my area so I didn’t even know what they carry.

I thought I read somewhere that it could be considered structuring to deposit MO in more than 1 bank. Is that incorrect?

NinjaX
NinjaX

haha. srsly? cmon Sun. you want our money drained dude?

Beth
Beth

I had a case in late 2016 of 2 of these cards being used in California and I live in the east. The cards were still in my drawer in their packages with the receipts. I got all my money back but it took about 3 months.
On my recent trip to OM I noticed at least 3 cards that had the cardboard packaging across the back removed and another that had a piece of tape over it. In these cases I suspect somebody has written down the 16 digit card number and will try to use them once they’re activated.

Jeff H
Jeff H

When that happens, PLEASE give them to the manager and if he/she does not know, tell them these need to be removed and/or destroyed. It does not count against store inventory.

That was what I did in same situation. Manager understood immediately.

Beth
Beth

of course I gave them to the cashier and told him they were compromised.

Deirdre

I had 2 out of 3 drained this past fall. I hung onto them a few days too long, they were drained within a week of purchase. Today is the first time I bought them since, I purchased 2 $100 cards in 2 separate transactions. Cost was $85.95 each. I immediately went across the street and got a $200 amazon at a “Kroger”. Will only buy these, if I can use them right away.

Jeff H
Jeff H

Kroger has 4X fuel points if your loyalty card has the digital coupon activated.

Anony Mouse

DP: I bought eight of these USBank MCGCs today and none appear to be compromised yet, however, it’s only been four hours since they were activated at the POS, so we’ll see. Crossing my fingers!
