[Expired] Pay Your Rent With Credit Card On Rentals.com; Get First 2 Months Fee-Free With American Express

Rentals.com has a rent pay option which allows paying your rent with a credit card for a 3% fee. ACH payments are free. It works for anyone, even if your landlord is not on their system, as they simply send out a check in that case.

The Offer

Direct Link to offer

  • Rentals.com is offering to refund the convenience fee for the first two months of your rent payment if you use American Express with Autopay.

They obviously want customers who will continue using the service long term, though I suppose you can always cancel the autopay if you decide not to continue using their service.

The Fine Print

  • Please see the complete Terms and Conditions (which govern this offer).
  • Offer valid for first 1,000 eligible renters.
  • Void where prohibited.
  • Only open to legal residents who are the age of majority in the U.S. or Washington, DC.
  • Offer open from 12:01am ET on June 27, 2019 through 11:59pm ET on October 5, 2019.
  • Sponsored by RentPath, LLC, 950 E. Paces Ferry Road NE, Suite 2600, Atlanta, GA 30326.
  • American Express is not a sponsor or administrator of this rebate promotion.

Our Verdict

The regular rate of 3% isn’t bad, though not the best, see our list Pay Your Rent With A Credit Card (Or Debit) – Complete List Of Options for various options, including Plastiq for 2.5%.

It’s interesting that they prefer Amex cards, either that’s because they pay less fees with Amex (surprising), or else they think it’s the right clientele for their business. I just want to stress that I know nothing about Rentals.com or their history. Please comment below if you’ve used them in the past.

According to the T&C, they started offering this on June 27… how do we know they haven’t already enrolled 1,000 renters?

This is like a merchant scamming to attract more users

That sounds like Amex’s problem

Payment declined with every Amex card I tried… And it’s not a problem with Amex. I have plenty of CL available.

Payment processing. I see a $1 hold on my Amex card from them.
Cautiously optimistic.

I don’t like that they refund it later but can always deny it claiming that more than 1000 renters have signed up. No way to know. At least Plastiq clearly shows the discounted fee and never charges full price when they run their promos.

Any bets on how long this Rentals.com will allow for rent payments w. AMEX? I give them until year end before they burn through their seed capital and shut down the Rent payment business line to focus on their core business(es).

3% clears the cost to accept CC. The real question is can they sufficiently prevent fraud to avoid losing money

Emporio
Emporio

True- they make a fraction of a percent over the interchange fees once they lose all that money acquiring customers with this promotion. But I doubt that revenue will cover the cost of fraud, shipping, customer service, overhead.

After I registered the screen indicated the promo was still available. But, when I tried to enter the site after registering, I had a blank page. The rep said the website only works with Google Chrome and Firefox, but I am still having the issue. Is anyone else having a problem?

Anyone know what happened to Urbanr, when it will be back?

Multiple AMEX cards denied for no apparent reason, CS phone line had a 20 minute (“unusually high volumes”) wait, then was set to voicemails only. Not worth it.

I scheduled a rent payment for Sept with my Delta Amex and received an email confirming that my fees are refunded in a few few weeks. Hooray!

1. When did you sign up/initiate payment (today? shortly before you posted your message here?)?
2. Did you get that email from Amex, or from rentals.com?

FWIW, I signed up/initiated payment today just a few minutes before you posted here….and am hoping I beat the “first 1000” cutoff. On amex.com I’m still seeing the $1 payment hold, not my full rent payment…

1. Yes I signed up yesterday afternoon
2. Got an email from Rentals.com – I guess they own RentPay? Said I will receive a credit in about 3 weeks.

You need to sign up for Auto-pay and I think the card is charged when they start the rent paying process? I have a $1 payment hold too.

Thanks for the update. I am signed up for auto-pay. My payment went through – on my amex.com account it now shows the full charge (including the 3% “service fee”), merchant ID is actually “Yapstone” (their payment processor), plus the $1 charge from rentals.com – both payments still show as pending for me. No email from rentals.com yet informing me that the fee will be refunded…I’m guessing they are swamped. But it sounds like I signed up at the same time as you, so hopefully I’ll get the happy news about the fee sometime today. It’s too bad this can only be fee-free for the first 2 months, but hey, if it works for 2 cycles, I’ll still be doing the happy dance. Thanks for answering my questions above and good luck!

Just got the email from rentals.com informing me that I would get the convenience fees refunded, so Im good. Happy feet.
