Premium Cards Compared: Chase Sapphire Reserve, American Express Platinum & Citi Prestige

A few people have been asking me to compare the benefits, earning rates and other features between the three premium travel credit cards: Chase Sapphire Reserve, American Express Platinum & Citi Prestige. So here you go, we’ll start with a table comparing all three cards and then look at some of the bigger differences in more detail.

Annual Fees

All of these cards come with the same annual fee of $450. The only difference is that if you have Citi Gold/Citi Priority or apply in a Citi branch under that offer then the Prestige card’s annual fee is reduced to $350. Because of this the Citi Prestige comes out on top with a tie going to the Platinum & Reserve.

Sign Up Bonus

Citi Prestige & American Express Platinum come with the same 40,000 point bonus (but with a slightly lower minimum spend requirement on the Platinum). It is possible to get 50,000 points on the Citi Prestige in branch though and it’s often possible to get a 75,000-100,000 point bonus on the American Express platinum card as well.

Chase Sapphire Reserve is currently in a league of it’s own with the CSR and it’s massive 100,000 point bonus. I suspect this is just a launch offer though and it’ll be reduced at some point.

Travel Credit

Platinum has the lowest credit ($200) and the most restrictive rules (airline incidentals only, although gift card purchases will usually work as well). Followed by the Prestige ($250 and any airline purchase will trigger it) and finally the Reserve with $300 and any travel purchase will trigger it.

Redeeming Points For Travel

Points are only worth 1¢ when redeeming for travel with the Platinum. On the Prestige they are worth 1.6¢ when redeeming for American Airlines flights and 1.33¢ for all other flights, although this is being reduced to 1.25¢ for all flights in July of next year. The Reserve again offers the best value with 1.5¢ per point for all travel (e.g hotels, airfare, car rentals & cruises).

Lounge Access

Lounge access is really where the Reserve card falls apart, it only offers priority pass select membership.

Travel Partners

Here are the travel partners for each card:

I’d argue that Chase has the strongest transfer partners even though they have the least amount of partners. The upside to both Citi & American Express is that they offer transfer bonuses that mean it’s often possible to transfer better than 1:1. You can view a complete list of all transfer bonuses for both card issuers below:

Our Verdict

I’m sure this post contains errors in it, I tried my best to ensure there aren’t any but it was difficult. Please correct any mistakes in the comments section below. Also let me know if you think anything needs to be added/modified. Each card excels in different areas, so it would be possible to make a case for each card to be the ‘best’, although I’d say that the Chase Sapphire Reserve is the most complete card – but it does have extremely poor lounge access.

Let me know what you think the best card is and why in the comments.

It would be great to see an update to this given all the changes they’ve gone through (and even comparing some lesser-known ‘premium’ cards such as USB Altitude).

“All three cards offer this insurance, Platinum & Reserve offer up to $10,000 and the Prestige offers up to $5,000 per person per trip.”

I don’t think the Platinum does offer this from what I have researched?

Any thought on doing this same posting for lower tier card (e.g. CSP vs Citi Primer)?

For the airline credit for prestige some airline gift cards purchased at their sites will be reimbursed, Is there a listing somewhere as to which airlines that sell their own gc will count for the credit.

Unlike Amex, where the united mileageplus x app giftcards work, it wont for citi because they dont code it as airline

ALOT of work, really appreciate the effort! A ton of time for sure! Basically it comes down to five things I think, free golf (Citi), better lounge access (AmEx), reimbursement of travel credit (Chase), sign up bonus (Chase) earning point rates (Chase). OVERALL, I still think you get a better value with the Platinum if you are a frequent traveler, in my opinion.

Would it be possible to expand on this and indicate whether it has to be directly with Airline/hotel websites or Travel Aggregators. ( Prestige offers 3X no matter which site you book it on). Others dont necessarily.

Thank you!

On a different note – if it wasnt for the 600 and 100k points, i wouldnt have bothered with CSR since when it comes to travel trip delay, baggage delay benefits for CP is much better (3 hours vs. 4 hours and 6 hours on CSR).

I have been delayed for 3+ hours, never really 6+ hours ( in most cases for overnight Airline offered me rides and hotel for me).

At Emergency Evacuation & Transportation its missing a 0 from Chase Sapphire reserve

I would like to know if guests are included in the CSR priority pass select. that will be the deciding factor in whether I keep it or not.

I was under the impression that US issued Amex Plat cards no longer offer medical evacuation (but some other locales still do, like Carribean). I researched it a while back and remember a disparity between it clearly stated on the Carribean Plat page, but not the US one. Am I mistaken?

Ivan X
Ivan X (@guest_287059)

I think I stand half corrected — I just checked again.

The Premium Global Assist hotline, which is included with the US Amex Platinum, appears to cover emergency evacuation with no specified maximum — but, if I understand it correctly, only from whatever local medical facility you’re already at to one closer to your home if medically necessary. (And you have to dive pretty deep to find where they say it: http://www.americanexpress.com/us/content/card-benefits/global-assist-terms.html)

By contrast, both the Citi Prestige and the Sapphire Reserve benefits guides are quite clear that the coverage (up to $100,000) includes transportation from wherever you’re injured or ill to the nearest local medical facility, *and* transport home if necessary.

So it seems like if you’re hiking in who knows where and break a leg, Citi and Chase will pay to have you helicoptered out, but Amex will not — getting to a local medical facility is your problem, and only then will they consider you flying you home if necessary. But IANAL, so someone else might want to read the Premium Global Assist guide and see if I’m interpreting correctly.

Also, I don’t know if it used to me more comprehensive, or if this is the way it’s always been. I just know someone who cancelled their Plat a couple of years ago because they claimed emergency evacuation had been removed from the benefits.

As a reference point, the Latin America/Carribean version of the Plat explicitly offers Platinum Travel Assistance, which is more in line with the Chase/Citi offerings: http://www.americanexpress.com/lacidc/en/laccards/assistancetravel.shtml

I’ve always been confused about this. If I’m hiking locally and I break my leg (happened to a guy on the same trail as us a month ago) how do I get Chase to pay for it? I didn’t book anything with them. Same applies to travelling in general. How much of a vacation has to be booked with them for this to kick in?

Ivan X
Ivan X (@guest_288081)

@Jelena Edwin,

The Sapphire Reserve benefits guide says you or your immediate family members can call Chase to help if you charge any portion of the flight (or other “Common Carrier”) that got you to where you’re going on the card with the benefit.

That would include the taxes for a rewards ticket, and makes the coverage better than the Citi Prestige, which requires that you charge the entire ticket on the card for the benefit.

Also, you do have to be more than 100 miles from home, and yes, you have to absorb your own transportation costs if the means of transportation isn’t medically necessary as determined by whatever physician Chase consults with.

Here’s what it it says for eligibility:

• You are eligible for the coverage when You charge a portion of the cost, or the entire cost of a Trip, made via a Common Carrier, to Your Account.
• The duration of the Trip cannot be less than five (5) days or exceed sixty (60) days, and it must be in excess of one hundred (100) miles* from Your place of Residence.
• You will be eligible to receive coverage for expenses not paid or payable by Your medical insurance or other reimbursement up to one hundred thousand ($100,000.00) dollars.
• The evacuation must be pre-approved by the Benefit Administrator in consultation with a legally licensed Physician who certified that emergency evacuation is warranted due to the severity of the injury or sickness.

Full benefits guide is here. See page 45:
