Update 4/26/20: Reports of Hilton dropping prices.
Update 3/27/20: Looks like Southwest has done another massive pricing cut, check those reservations again.
Update 3/14/20: Southwest has dropped prices again. Marriott & Hyatt have also updated their cancellation policies
Update 3/12/20: It’s possible to now do this on advance purchase bookings for both IHG & Hilton. You need to cancel and rebook though and it’s only for stays until April 30th, 2020.
Due to COVID-19 prices for flights and hotels have been dropping across the board, this is a friendly reminder to check for price drops and rebook where possible. Southwest has a generous rebooking/change policy making this process easy and Alaska elites with MVP Gold members can also do this.
Hat tip to @PointsToPointB
Anyone know if booking flights for someone else through my points also returns the points back to me if canceled? Does this work the same as cash?
Reservation for someone else made by you with points from your account return to your account if tickets cancelled. If you paid cash for another person’s ticket and cancel reservation the credit goes to the passenger in their name…. Not returned to person who paid.
Thanks for the reminder! Was able to rebook several flights and then book 3 more flights with all the savings!
I advise continuing to check Southwest as prices seem to drop a little further out as the days go by. For ex, earlier this week I checked for a 6/24 flight and it was still $164. Yesterday it went to $59.
Saved 8,700 points for July trip to Denver!
So this thread is basically a case study on how that virus spreads around the country
Thanks, DoC! $78 savings for a flight in June (if it happens lol) 🙂
Just got 35,000 points back for a VERY expensive New Orleans flight. Love you doc!
Southwest isn’t allowing me to change my flight online anymore.
You should at least be able to cancel it and then just rebook it at the lower price.
Same here. I cancelled my flight and rebooked the lower rates with travel funds as the work around.
My flight from PHX to FLL actually went UP 1400 points since I booked it two days ago. Weird.
Thanks Doc! Going to BWI from ABQ for Memorial Day weekend for 16,000 SW points total, awesome deal!
