PSA: Some IHG Accounts Disabled [10K Points]

Update 10/14/21: Some members are reporting receiving 10k points to compensate for this issue. Hat tip to The Gate

Just a quick PSA to check your IHG accounts as currently some accounts are disabled. The issue has been occurring since at least October 9. It’s unclear what is causing this issue, but it doesn’t seem to be an intentional banning by IHG. Some users affected have been able to get their accounts unlocked after verifying identity with an IHG representative. You can find more discussion of this issue here:

On the upside I did receive 10,000 points as a goodwill gesture. Did not ask for this, just saw this in the morning.

seems like a great way fro IHG to forfeit some points

Thanks for the heads up. Really surprised so many folks (Flyertalk) are affected

I track five family members’ accounts with Awardwallet and all appear unaffected, fortunately

I had 200K points stolen from my IHG account once. If you have any sort of a sizable balance you should be checking it on a regular basis.

What is your account hacked, or was it some type of glitch or something else? Were you able to recover the points?

I am not the poster to whom you were responding, but my account was hacked. (All someone needs is your email address and a 4 digit number.). I caught it in time and IHG made me whole and I imagine cancelled the reservations the hacker made that were still pending.

Good to know! I was always concerned about a mere 4 digit PIN being used to secure the account.

With the recent news about some accounts being locked (with no official word on the reason), I checked my account (fortunately OK) and changed the password. I noticed that it’s now possible (required if you change the password at all) to use a longer, alphanumeric password. I don’t know when exactly that feature was introduced, but probably sometime in the past year.

William Charles , perhaps a follow up to this post could be about the ability to set a longer, alphanumeric password on IHG accounts now.

I’m locked out and I have an award night booked for tomorrow. Been on hold close to an hour, let’s see what happens…

If it is already booked I don’t think it should be affected

Gave up after being on hold for over 2 hours. Then tried the chat near midnight PST and barely had to wait. Verified some info and instantly unlocked the account.

P2’s account was locked and I noticed when trying to redeem points today for a 2022 reservation. Was on hold for nearly 2.5 hours before I could reach a. Rep who unlocked the account after I verified some account details.

My account and husband’s account are both safe. Whew. Outrage averted!

I changed my PW just to be safe. Hoping this isn’t another security breach, in which case I will gladly take the free lifetime identity theft monitoring.

I’ve never had lifetime ID monitoring, always a limited timeframe for all these various breaches. Consumers always lose.
