Q4 2014: Recent Targeted Credit Card Offers

I thought I’d do something a bit different and list all of the targeted credit card offers people receive each quarter. I’ll also give my analysis on whether I think it’s a good deal to apply or whether you’re better off waiting for something else. I’m going to rely on my readers to let me know what targeted offers they receive so I can keep this post up to date.

Here is how to check your targeted offers:

American Express

Personal

It’s important to remember that you can only earn the bonus on American Express personal cards once per lifetime.

  • Blue Cash Preferred: $250 Statement credit after $1,000 in spend. This is an extremely common targeted offer, but it’s the highest this particular bonus gets. Card also comes with one free year of Amazon prime. 6% on all grocery store purchases on up to $6,500 per year make this card worth considering. Annual fee is waived the first year
  • AmEx EveryDay:
  • AmEx Everyday Preferred: 25,000 points after $2,000 in spend within three months. This is 10,000 points higher than the public sign up bonus and the highest this has been on this card. Card also lets you earn up to 4.5x points on all grocery store purchases on up to $6,000 per year.
  • American Express Platinum:
    • 100,000 points after $10,000 in spend. It’s unlikely you’ll receive the higher 150,000 point bonus and it’s a good idea to get this card near the end of the year as the Airline credit is based on a calendar year rather than a card member year. If you’re going to apply for this card at some stage and think you’re unlikely to get the 150,000 offer then now is the time to do so.
    • 150,000 points after $10,000 in spend: Very rare but a few people have reported being offered this card. Obviously it’s much better than the 100,000 point offer but chances are you won’t be offered it. If you’ve received the 100,000 point offer I’d recommend waiting a little bit to see if they send you a 150,000 point offer or not.

Business

Business AmEx cards are churnable. You should be able to get the bonus once every twelve months.

  • Amex Business Gold Rewards Card: 75,000 points after you spend $5,000 or more within three months of being approved. Annual fee waived for the first year. It’s possible for anybody to get this offer, click this link to find out how [although it has a slightly higher spending requirement of $10,000].
  • American Express Platinum: 100,000 points after you spend $10,000 or more. It’s possible for everybody to get this by following these instructions.

Bank of America

  • Alaska Airlines: 50,000 points upon approval. This is a great offer and one I’d be signing up for if I had received it. Fingers crossed a public 50,000 offer comes back.

Chase

  • Chase Southwest Premier & Plus cards. Receive 50,000 points after you spend $1,000 or more within three months of account opening. Public offers are regularly this high and it’s still possible to get the 50k point offers if somebody refers you (they’ll also receive an extra 5,000 points).

Citi

  • Citi Double Cash: $200 cash sign up bonus when you spend $1,000 or more. We’ve posted about this deal before and how it might be possible to get even if you didn’t receive the offer yourself. I think this is a good cash sign up bonus and having a 2% cash back card is always nice, although I rarely end up using my 2% cards.

Smaller Card Issuers

5/3rd Bank

  • Fifth Third Preferred Card: 50,000 points after $2,000 in spend. Annual fee of $79 is waived first year. Card earns 2x points on restaurant, travel, gas, and grocery, 1x on everything else. 50,000 points = $500 MasterCard gift card. This card is worth getting for the sign up bonus, as it’s one of the highest cash bonuses on the market. This card doesn’t usually have a sign up bonus associated with it.

Final Thoughts

These pages are only as useful as you make them, please list any targeted offers you’ve received and if possible share the links so others might be able to get them as well.
