The lack of sympathy and the inability of commenters to step into someone else’s shoes and empathize with their circumstances is mind boggling.

Let’s not blame the decades of a failed education system that doesn’t graduate adults with basic life skills like managing finances. Let’s not blame the megabanks who are like crack dealers and charge what should be considered usurious and predatory interest and fees. Let’s also not blame the corrupt government that was not prepared for a pandemic because it was busy dividing us on our differences and continues on that path while handing out trillions in borrowed money without any oversight, sending millions in checks to dead people and other assorted scammers. Let us all pile on and blame the poor guy who has the misfortune of being caught between a rock and a system designed to grind people to a pulp for not “pulling themselves up by bootstraps”.

No— let’s blame the free-willed individual who makes decisions for himself. Guarantee you he has a new iPhone, a 4K TV, and cable.

So the change to the Marriott policy only seems to matter for pre-paid stays? Or am I missing something?

Agree. Still seems to be 24-hours prior to stay for most stays. Headline without a summary/note had me expecting worse.

Can confirm the Citi thing. Recently did a cfpb complaint to ask if they would lower or waive Prestige annual fee since it’s mainly a travel and entertainment card and not doing much of either right now. Also asked to reopen two cards they unceremoniously closed due to inactivity even though I followed their process and called them to ask that they be kept open before closure. Executive response person didn’t even make contact or attempt to address complaint. Sent me an email with a pdf letter attached saying they respectfully decline my requests. No signature. No context or contact info. Just signed “Citi executive response”.

Sour grapes? CFPB because they charged you the annual fee? This year they really didn’t change much; changes due to travel were beyond their control. Now in past years. they have severely devalued the card, but this year. you wrote CFPB because you didn’t get a retention offer? That’s called entitlement.

saying Citibank is charging $100 in monthly interest for best but card . Yes. why does everyone think that they just need to stop charging interest. For rent, etc deferrals is understandable but to not charge them at all sorry. These are not necessities.

Why is a deferral for rent understandable. If I own citibank stock, why should I have to lose money? Everyone thinks these big banks can afford it, but the reality is the stock is owned by ordinary people. Many people’s pensions are invested in them.

When the tenant doesn’t pay rent to the landlord, the landlord doesn’t/can’t pay the mortgage to citibank.

Why in the world is it okay if the tenant doesn’t pay his rent?? Isn’t that what unemployment PLUS the extra $600 per week is for, so he can pay his bills? Most landlords are mom-and-pop type people who rely on the rent money to pay the property’s expenses, like taxes and insurance as well as to pay their own personal expenses.

How bad are we supposed to feel for someone who bought a new TV on credit and can’t cover the payment with the $600/week federal unemployment through 31 July plus whatever their state pays (usually $300ish/week)? So $3500-4000 a month just in unemployment doesn’t cover the 75” 8K Samsung?

“ One Best Buy customer from Pennsylvania filed a complaint in June to the CFPB database saying Citibank is charging $100 in monthly interest even though he or she was laid off because of the pandemic.”

Reminds me of the GOP argument that we should bail out corporations but not states… everyone and everything needs the support right now, or we’ll face an even greater economic downturn. This is not the time for austerity. Poor people buying TVs is actually good for the economy. Giving rich people more tax breaks just leads to them hoarding more cash.

But is the “poor person” really BUYING a tv if he uses a credit card and stiffs the credit card company despite getting paid unemployment PLUS an extra $600 per week??? It sounds more like the credit card company bought the tv, which the poor person is enjoying.

TBH I feel more sorry for that person than I did for the banks in 2008-2009. I do agree though everyone should have an emergency fund to handle black swan events like covid.

Not 100%, but highly likely that a person paying $100 in monthly interest on a Best Buy credit card incurred a portion of those charges at Best Buy.

If someone can’t afford to pay off their credit card balance, maybe they shouldn’t have made the purchase in the first place. The problem here is people who have no money saved up for the future, like most Americans.

Did you forget when we bailed out the too big to fail banks? Your children and their children will be on hook for any losses incurred by the greedy capitalists. It’s the American way. Private profits, socialized losses.

I agree with all your posts from a principled perspective, but there’s a practical reality to all of this too. Essentially what these things boil down to is the philosophy behind haves vs. have-nots. The Libertarian approach is to advocate for personal responsibility and every man/woman for themselves, but the reality is also that if have-nots are not helped (or in many cases enabled….), then there would be a violent uprising by the have-nots that outnumber the haves. Will you take out your gun and start shooting to defend you and your family or is it easier to sacrifice something for the greater good?
