[Rumor] Chase Will Launch Premium Southwest Card [Additional Details]

Update: This card is now live, more details here.

We now have some additional details regarding the card:

  • Launch date set for sometime in July
  • Annual fee of $150
  • Will come with a discount on inflight items
  • Comes with upgrades for A1-15 boarding
  • Sign up bonus of 70,000 points

I thought readers could use some cheering up after the launch of the pathetic Barclays Arrival Premier, devaluation of the IHG card & new restriction on Southwest cards. This comes from a normally very reliable source. Chase and Southwest have plans to launch a premium Southwest card later this year (Q3), card will come with a number of Southwest benefits and is being positioned as a premium card. Sign up bonus is set to be high enough that if paired with another 50,000 point bonus you’d have enough for a companion pass (e.g it’s 70,000 or more). This is one of the reasons the new restriction was added to Southwest cards.

How could you pair with another 50,000 point bonus with the new restriction though? Unless this new Premium card doesn’t count as a personal SW card?

Probably paired withe the SW Biz card.

just need to get rid of the 5/24 rule

Maybe this will not fall under 5/24 like Ritz?

SW cards are extremely popular among churners, no way they’re not gonna place it under 5/24.

Sam

it’s not all chase’s decision. if it were they would probably place all their cards under 5/24

Alaskan Credit card does not have 5/24 rule. They are doing things like flying to Hawaii and new Premium card to compete with Alaskan. If people can’t get their credit card how can they compete?

yea rite…

Dear god, just get rid of the 5/24 rule on it and I’m in.

The rule is there for the reason you don’t want it to be there.

Rumored that you can have two companions attached to your companion pass if you have this card. #FakeNews

I wonder what the perks will be? You can already earn 1.5 Southwest points with the FU

Chances on a leaked link that will bypass 5/24? 🙂

I don’t understand their thought process, why a premium card for an airline that’s not targeting such customers?
No lounges.
No business class.
I think the customers who want to a premium card (not churners, travelers) don’t fly SW.

ur confusing WM premium vs international carrier premium. domestic shuttle flights are not in the same group as lie flat 16hr flights.

Probably more than 1 point per dollar in categories.

In the words of one of America’s most underrated poets, Murphy Lee: “Wat da hook gon be?”

All that’s really coming to mind as a potential eye-catcher is (1) increased points earning on category spending and (2) a spend-related path to A-list. It’s not like Southwest can really offer upgraded seating options, free-er checked bags and change fees, or extensive lounge access. The only other “premium” options I can think of seem either unlikely (e.g. cheaper/free Early Bird check-in) or inconsequential to most heavy travelers (e.g. Global Entry/TSA Pre credit).

As a loyal and frequent WN flyer, this has me more worried about another related change or further devaluation than it has me excited about a new card. I guess we’ll see …

yea i could see them making it so that only those with the premium card could be privy to the overly generous southwest cancellation. seems like premium often means reducing benefits and charging more to sustain the previous benefit levels

I could see EB check-in as a benefit if the annual fee is high enough. My wish list item is for refundable tickets on Wanna Get Away fares. I hate having to deal with managing SW credits, and tickets bought on points are already refundable. Virgin America used to have free cancellation/changes as a benefit to their credit card (that card was discontinued after the merger with Alaska).

We don’t need no f@&#in hook on this beat.

I would guess something with earlybird check in and probably 3x southwest points per dollar spent on southwest flights will be the “premium” benefits of the card. Maybe they will let people spend even more, or lower the spending threshold, for A-List status? Which will stink for us that fly them regularly but I guess this is the game they play nowadays.

The wife has two Southwest personal cards that had 60k bonuses each. I have none. So I just need a 5/24 exception. Perhaps in their battle with Alaskan they will be so desperate for market share they will open this up to churners.

what is going on with chase launching all these cards and they are supposed to launch aer lingus card too next month? give us SPG with lifetime platinum status just by having the card lol which is never gonna happen

“Premium” seems to hold a different meaning for the banks.

Will,

On a scale of 0- 10, how confident are you that this rumor will happen? As an aside, I wouldn’t be mad if every rumor post threw out a percentage likelihood of it coming true. All in good fun.

I would think this means either the Plus or Premier would be doing away. I’m very curious to see what this becomes. I guess I’ll hang on to my Plus card in hopes of upgrading, assuming the benefits are there.

Is there speculation that the new “Premium” card will be able to be paired with a current SW card like the Premier or will that card have the restriction as well?

AS
AS

I predict a discount on in-flight purchases. That would explain the recent price hike in alcoholic drinks.

I also predict at least 3X to match or beat Reserve (which as we know can be transfered 1:1 to SW).

A Citi AA-style rebate when redeeming miles would explain the recent devaluation but I see this as unlikely.

I’d guess EITHER TSA Pre OR Priority Pass but not both. Early Check-in possible perk.
