The Offer

Direct Link to offer (login required)

Check your Safeway Just4U for a digital coupon to get:

  • $15 off when you buy two $100 Mastercard gift cards. Expires 9/8/18.
  • $10 off when you buy two $50 Mastercard gift cards. Expires 9/8/18.

The Safeway deals are usually at Von’s, Albertson’s, Randall’s, Tom Thumb, Acme, Shaw’s, and Jewel too. This time some of the stores only have the $50 offer, not the $100 offer.

There are a few other gift card deals showing there as well:

  • 10% off $50+ iTunes gift cards, limit 1, expires 9/4/18.
  • $10 off when you buy $100 in Gap, Kohl’s, or JCPenney gift cards. Expires 8/28/18.
  • 4x fuel points on Happy Gift Cards, expires 9/8/18.
  • 10x fuel points on Domino’s gift cards, expires 9/4/18.
  • 10x fuel points on Google Play gift cards, expires 8/28/18.
  • 4x fuel points in Taco Bell gift cards, expires 8/28/18.

Our Verdict

In the past, the $100 and $50 deals at Safeway did not work on variables; you’ll have to find those exact fixed denomination cards. Remember to save the offer first to your card before use. You won’t get fuel points on Visa/MC gift cards.

There’s also a Mastercard deal at Publix this week.

Beware ALL, the GC company associated with Mastercard is not secure. Regarding my online registration issue, I called them up and they indicated it’s activated. I asked them the reason for me not being able to register and CS just indicated some pre-activity before amount was loaded. I registered using their phone banking giving my name, address.
I was able to login later and verify the amount and interestingly amount was loaded when I bought it at safeway itself not later (so not sure how pre-activity could have happened).
Anyways, later in the evening I was trying to transact and card was declined. I tried login into the prepaidgiftbalance website and again start getting errors. I call the toll free and to my dismay the balance was reduced to just $5. The transaction history on phone doesn’t give much info on where it was used. So now am at a loss (not significant however enough to never buy MC gift cards). I have lost all trust in MC gift cards 🙁

Will see what the customer service indicates.

(And getting hacked on a network will be bit rare since their website is SSL enabled)

Was able to login (works only if I used direct cell phone network instead of my home one), the transaction was at round table pizza that too like nearby one. Now wondering if it’s a case of duplicate cards or real hacking. It shows POS transactions so guessing for a POS transaction the card should have been physically being present. There is a 8 day hold on it.

Their site indicates one can report unauthorized transaction (only if GC was registered in my name, luckily I did), so lets see if am able to dispute the transaction.

My experience of MasterCard gift cards is that they are cumbersome compared to visa ones!
Tried checking balance online and half of the times keeps giving error (and it works when called over phone). There captcha is frustrating, one can’t read it properly and when refreshed it never allows you in even though all info is correct. Only when one enters the captch correctly first attempt itself (not after refresh) it allows you in (else keeps giving error redirecting to call).
Not sure if others have faced issues with MC gift cards! (Visa is smooth sailing).

Having a hard time activating these. Number on back not picking up or is disconnected. I’d stay away.

I didnt have activation issues for other 3 and just with one card, as well was was able to connect over phone.
However after my ordeal around their security and fraud prevention (read below/above posts around my card being used fraudulently, that too transaction as used at terminal when I have possession of physical card), am sure to stay away from them.

That’s what Chula Vista VONS store cashiers have been telling customers for about 2 months.

Some stores make up their own rules like that, but the register still allows it.

So if I am not mistaken there is a $5.95 activation fee for them so about $12 fee for $200 card and then $10 back. Right?

It will be $15 and not $12.

you can but amex has been cracking down on gift card purchases to fulfill MSR. i wouldn’t risk it personally.

No. My wife was denied the Hilton Amex bonus because they detected the gift card purchases from Safeway. This wasn’t always the case and I had used VGCs cards bought from safeway to meet msr for several other amex cards before. Late last year they must’ve introduced some new algorithms that looked for safeway purchases because both my wife and sister was denied their bonuses around the same time. It is not safe.

wow! and here i thought safeway was safe! pun intended
made me re-check my own safeway and it does report ‘Level III Line Item”. i thought it was only Level II. very useful tool on checking which stores report L3. https://www.visa.com/supplierlocator-app/app/

Thank you very much. Combined with all of the other hassles I’ve had with my local Safeway stores this tells me that I’m mostly done with Safeway (unless they ever have another unlimited $10/$50 deal again).

Talking about safeway stores hassles, my one seems to have stopped apple pay and once this clerk ask my id proof while using apple pay for gift card. I provide ID however then he asks physical card. Am like the whole point of apple pay is no requirement of carrying the card. I just tell him I don’t have physical card and I gave him id proof, and if that doesnt work I don’t want his gift cards (which he had removed the back tags). So he just throws the cards! Great safeway’s loss of revenue as well as I try to avoid shopping out there. Not even sure whats safeways policy for apple pay requiring physical card for validation.
If safeway is so concerned about people buying gift cards, they should just stop selling them! Lot safer eh!

Very much appreciated! On a separate note Sears/KMart SYWR members should check their accounts for a possible $6 in Freecash. These “tend” to appear on Sundays and today’s have a very short fuse: expires Tues 8/28.
