Our Verdict
Same deal was here a few weeks ago, apparently as part of a marketing effort on the new Five Back cards. The discount works on a few other varieties like Style, Dining, Fuel, etc, but those other ones don’t function like ordinary Visa gift cards. The Five Back cards works anywhere like a standard Visa gift cards.
Most people would like maximizing this deal by purchasing $500 Visa gift cards to rack up credit card points. After the $10 discount, it will cost around $497 for the $500 card. Could be a good deal if you only find $200 denominations or $100 denominations as well.
There are also prepaid deals this week at Staples and Kmart.
Purchased one at Safeway with CC, but ran into complications at register. Charge was successfully placed on my CC, then register said not authorized when it attempted to activate the card. There was almost a mutiny from the people behind me in line when cashier sighed and called the manager. Manager came and took me over to the gift card rack, grabbed a new card then took me to customer service and activated a different card for me really quickly. No need for me to pull out CC again. I verified card was active before I left the store by calling 800 number and all was well. In retrospect, it looks like register is hard coded to reject CC at the activation step. $10 was taken off automatically though, and no mention of offer on my Safeway app.
Worked at Acme with credit card accepted as payment. Had variable load up to $200 with 6.95 fee.
I went to Vons to buy (Five bank) visa credit card.
cashier told me cash only.
I cant pay it from my credit card.

Not at Vons or Pavilions in LA area. However, I had a separate offer on my club card for $100 AMEX with no fee. And, yes, YMMV.
