Safeway: Purchase $100 In American Express Gift Cards & Get $10 Off

The Offer

No direct link

  • Safeway (and I assume associated brands) are offering $10 off your next shopping order when you purchase $100 or more in American Express gift cards.

safeway deal

The Fine Print

  • Valid until 5/2/17
  • Not valid in VT

Our Verdict

Update: Here is the store coupon that prints out, interestingly no minimum spend mentioned.

store couponstore coupon

Image printed at a self check out register. Lots of unknown’s on this one:

  • Can you get multiple $10 credits?
  • Do you need to enter a Safeway member number?
  • Do you need to purchase through a cashier?
  • Does the $10 off offer print out as a coupon, or does it get automatically taken off your next purchase?
  • Can the $10 offer be used on a gift card purchase?
  • Does the $10 offer come with a minimum purchase?

Big thanks to Luke B and reader @c4mer0n

Has anyone done this deal yet? I’m curious about what the coupon looks like (any restrictions on its use).

The coupon is shown in the “Our Verdict” section above, along with it’s restrictions.

Thanks. I did it by buying 2 $100 AMEX GCs in separate transactions. I then opened Venmo accounts for myself and my wife.
The supermarket coupon is as “advertised”: $10 off with no minimum spend, and you have 2 weeks to use it.

This is an incredibly marginal deal. The AMEX GC fee is $5.95, so I spent that to get a $10 supermarket credit plus some Honors points (worth about $3). I wouldn’t bother the next time, but I did learn some stuff, especially about Venmo, that might be useful to me later.

Thanks for detailing your process and giving your personal (and enlightening) “verdict” on the deal!

Sweet deal for him. Just completed the first pass, the cashier did not know about it, but it printed the coupon along with the receipt just like at staples.

I don’t see why this can’t be repeated more than once.

What’s your plan to liquidate the Amex GC, and, if you’re planning to scale the offer, what’s your plan to scale?

I did a $500 as this for minimum spend and will do the usual Sam’s VGC($4.95) ->MO($1.2) thing. In theory you could do a 10x $100 for this process to pocket an impressive $ 43.85.

But in my experience Sam’s cashiers start the No GC for another GC thing as soon as you ask them to use more than 1 GC.

Paypal can give you around $30 as well, but they will shut you down.

Good to know, thanks for elaborating! One clarifying question:

The $500 Amex GC comes with a $5.95 purchase/activation fee, so wouldn’t you be paying $512.10 ($500+$5.95+4.95+$1.20) for $510 in value? If not, do you mind clarifying/elaborating for me?

Like I said this is for minimum spend. But you might also want to consider the 2.1% close to $11 in terms of cash back. You can also save $0.6 by getting one MO for $1000 🙂

BTW, what’s the cost at Safeway for a $100 AMEX card? $4.95, perhaps?

Interesting offer. I’ll be waiting to see if folks can get multiple coupons without tricks, and to confirm that there’s no minimum spend on the coupon.

The problem, of course, is what to do with the AMEX GCs. For this reason, I tend to avoid them. Is there any easy, reliable way to turn them back into cash for, say, a 2% fee?

I thought I read somewhere that Venmo was like Paypal: quite hostile to MS, with lots of shutdowns. No?

yeah they’ll definitely shit u down if u do too many. the threshold i’ve read about is 6 amex gc in 6 months is the maximum.

i recently liquidated a $100 amex gc to my wife over venmo, worked like a charm

I used my safeway card and also paid at a register

The expiry is 04/29/2017, so it looks like it’s the one you posted about, but I had another one that expired (and used) last Friday. Yesterday it appeared with this expiry.

When you get these offers do you have to pay the $3.95 activation fee or whatever to get the discount? So it really is only a $6 deal or so?

Lrdx

Yeah. Plus any cashback / points you get at groceries. It also works for the 5 back Visa.

I also saw the ” effective immediately no GC @ self checkout today”, but did not see any postings for Amex GC’s the way it was done for Visa.

I am not able to see it on my justforyou either, last time I had added the visa deal to my account.

True its not showing on J4U but the last $10 off $25 offer on the purchase of $50 in various gift cards (Nike et al) wasn’t on J4U either. Agree w Daniel above on details.

By the way, that fine print all but confirms this promo is at other Safeway family stores (Safeway isn’t on the east coast, never mind VT). Should have noticed / thought of that earlier.

Just saw it, thanks to your comment. Wow, that’s great news. Do you think it’s better to buy $100 GC (to get the most amount of $10 off coupons with lower required to liquidate) or get $500 GC (in order to manufacture the greatest spend)?

And…just realized that Amex GC can’t be used to buy MOs 🙁 What are the easiest ways to liquidate Amex GC, and what are the least expensive ways?

If this promo is anything like previous Safeway promos:

Can you get multiple $10 credits?
Yes

Do you need to enter a Safeway member number?
Yes

Do you need to purchase through a cashier?
There are signs at self checkout saying gift cards must be purchased at a register; The truth is, they CAN be purhcased at self checkout, but a cashier needs to override it anyway.

Does the $10 off offer print out as a coupon, or does it get automatically taken off your next purchase?
Coupon

Can the $10 offer be used on a gift card purchase?
No, normal exclusions apply (gift cards, tobacco, etc.)

Does the $10 offer come with a minimum purchase?
Usually it’s $10 off a $25 purchase.

Counter DP:

I had success using similar $10 off coupons (from the previous Safeway gift card promo) on a purchase including a giftcard. I think the key is to have some other items besides just the giftcard in the purchase you’re using the $10 off cupon on

Luke Bornheimer
Luke Bornheimer (@guest_396789)

Great DP, thanks! Did the other items total more than $10, or did a portion of the $10 off coupon go towards the gift card purchase?

Superchurn
Superchurn (@guest_396996)
April 27, 2017 11:53

the other items were about $8 as i recall, so yeah a portion of the discount did actually apply to the gift card. not sure if it was just a lazy cashier or what, so YMMV

Great to know, thanks! What’s your plan for liquidating the Amex GC?

Superchurn
Superchurn (@guest_397395)
April 28, 2017 02:36

probably will just liquidate via organic spend. amex gc are a royal pain to liquidate, but they work just fine for actual spending
