[Expired] [Extended to 10/31] Simon Mall Will Sell $1,000 Visa Gift Cards With $3.95 Activation Fee

Deal has expired, view more Simon Mall deals by clicking here

[Update 8/21/19: Reader JuicyJosh and reader Matt report that Simon Corporate just sent out a blast to customers that they’ve decided to extend this through October 31. (I see now Frequentmiler reporting the same.)]

[Update 8/1/19: Frequentmiler reports this has been extended through August 31. I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes a long-term thing.]

Simon Mall regulars are being informed by their Simon contact that $1,000 Visa gift cards will be available from July 17th through August 4th. Activation fee will be the standard $3.95 per card. It appears this will be an in-store deal for purchase at physical Simon locations.

These gift cards will be available to all consumers (ht reader Mickeymouse). Just tell them you want to purchase the $1k card for manufacture spend purposes, and they should let you purchase up to $10,000 worth. (Limits go up to $25k for regular volume buyers.)

We wrote last month of a rumor that Simon would begin selling $1,000 Visa gift cards online to churners. Not clear if this temporary offer is what was being rumored there. (That rumor referenced an online offer while this deal seems like it’s for in-mall purchase.) Likely, Simon is exploring the idea of making $1k gift cards more widely available, and offering this temporary offer to get more data on how it’ll pan out.

Update, Note: Multiple data points indicate that Amex no longer issues points for Simon Mall gift card purchases (1, 2). Certainly don’t use Simon to meet a minimum spend on an Amex card. Also, do not hide that you are Manufactured Spending, it’ll only make things more difficult. They know about it and are okay with it.

Surely SM must be working on setting up a MO (Kate) machine close by. How else can a mall possibly respond to AMZN?

doraldude
doraldude

I can tell you that I have heard from several agents at my local Simon that they are in fact working on getting MOs at the customer service desk. Whether this is actually true I don’t know – but even managers have told me.

Frank
Frank

I mean at that point could they just start running the CC through the MO machine….like why waste all the GC plastic

J
J

Frank, they get more money from each gift card purchase than they would the money orders directly

This would get me banned so fast.

I got an email from my Simon mall marketing director late afternoon “big gift card announcement” but ignored it until I read your post as I thought it was the usual $1 off…confirms what you wrote. This is really big if it works out beyond the mentioned 2 weeks!

I am trying to find an official link or something. I was told it was only for corporate accounts.

So, shouldn’t the credit go to The Point Chaser? I believe she was the first one who posted the news, and when SM corporate denied this people were throwing shit at her. There was even a follower of DoC on twitter called her c*nt.

Agreed, some people should apologize. Using that language even if she is wrong is unacceptable IMO

You didn’t fix anything. You just badly (intentionally?) misunderstood.

Actually she learned of this through a post on her FB page.

I went to the mall (MIM, FL) yesterday to purchase one and the guy at the desk mentioned that unless I have a corporate account I couldn’t purchase one. They can’t sell to individual consumers. Is there a link from simon mall stating the fact that it’s for anyone?

James Bond

No public link available. I was told there is an internal memo sent to all the offices.

I can’t think of a card I would want to MS with at Simon’s.
The only one I ever did was SPG back when it still earned 3x marriott.

$ 403.22 net gain on Citi 2% given a 25k maximum daily purchase!!!!! Yay!!!

That’s a sh!t ton (technical term) of MOs. We’re running out of MO opportunities in my area (all Super WMs, gone, and I imagine the regulars will soon follow)

Hyatt to manufacture globalist with tiered gifts along the way

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

Globalist like 1 mil in spend? Sheesh.

Youngestofallthebuck
Youngestofallthebuck

If working from scratch:

60 nights – 5 nights for holding card = 55 nights to globalist.
55 nights / 2 nights per $5k spend = 28 instances required
28*$5k=$140k spend
$140*$3.95=$553 in fees + $1/$1k MO = $673 in fees/liquidation costs

Along the way would earn:
– 4 club lounge passes
– 4 suite upgrades
– 1 Cat 1-4 free night
– 1 Cat 1-7 free nights
– 5k Hyatt points OR $100 Hyatt GC
– 140,553 Hyatt points from spend

Youngestofallthebuck
Youngestofallthebuck

Edit: 2 Cat 1-4 free nights (didn’t count the one earned w/ $15k spend)

brian
brian

could also mix tier rewards/points earned to reduce spend if liquidation becomes difficult. i’m halfway there, this will be a nice boost.

Beechy

Is this spend on new Hyatt card, not old one? Thanks.

Maybe also include 140k spend as $2,800 cost.

brian

$20 cost per $1k spend? You need to find better liquidations routes.

Alli

How do the numbers change with the old Hyatt card?

Joe
Joe

This is my plan. How much can you do on the Hyatt at SM at one time?

brian

I did about 7.5k during prime day sales. If you notify them ahead of time, probably whatever your limit is.

Sarah D

I’ve thought about this before but realized the amount of effort it requires totally dwarfs the extra comfort it gives you for a couple weeks a year you actually benefit of staying at slightly nicer property/free upgrades.

When does the “calendar year” begin counting for Globalist — card anniversary or January 1-December 31? And, once earned how long do you keep it?

Ctown Bin
Ctown Bin

It’s great for meeting non-AMEX MSRs, especially if you have a high MSR since in one trip to Simon you can spend a lot more than is typical of regular stores that sell VGC (CVS etc.) For me I’ll be using this to finish up the $50k MSR from the Capital One Spark 200k deal from January, couldn’t have come at a better time.

bob
bob

if you can liquidate them easily, it’s a good MS opportunity for 2% cards.

be careful with the $50K Spark – my friend had that and got shut down for too much volume too quickly

CtownBin
CtownBin

Wait, really? Any idea how much your friend did in one shot? As of now, most I’ve done in one transaction is $2,500 from giftcards.com, once a week over the last 4 months. But I was going to finish off the last $8k at Simon. I also am using it for all regular purchases.

Curmudgeon
Curmudgeon

How much did he do? I hit my Spark card $9600 at a time and finished the $50k in a couple of months

I have 5k chase minimum spend so this is good timing

Richard

Well if we were hoping for better bonuses and benefits in the near future from banks other than Amex, this pretty much sunk it for sure. This does make life easier for us!

JP
JP

$1k is nice. I can only think of one place that we can wait inline to get done. Most other places have $500 limit.

I do not want to mention names. All MSers hate that. LOL.

Any news if they’ll also be sold on simon.com/giftcard?

Tyler

Seeing as all WM’s around me recently went to a 2 swipe max for all money order transactions, this could actually be useful.

Meghan Hunter
Meghan Hunter

Will AMEX shut down accounts for buying GCs to meet minimum spend? I thought I remember reading about that somewhere…

Morgon
Morgon

Not likely to shut down, but way too many DPs of clawing back (or not awarding) due to obvious MS.

Mimi
Mimi

Based on a lot of DPs, AXP don’t close the account but many have experienced saying they didn’t get even the base points which means it’s a loss in terms of purchase fees. One should know the risk they’re taking when using AXP CC.

Mayo
Mayo

Just a silly question, how to liquidate the gift card? My local WM has banned using gift card for MO recently.

Mimi
Mimi

Find a grocery store that accepts DCs and don’t ask to see the card before swiping.

Mayo
Mayo

haven’t found one yet, all the grocery stores I have asked only accept cash, but it’s time to explore more, do you have any recommendation?

F. Flinstone
F. Flinstone

Might want to try a more affluent area for the grocery stores. I live in a low to middle income area and none of the stores here accept plastic. I can drive to a more posh area and score.

MrObvious
MrObvious

Spend it at a store in the mall.

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

I have seen people save them til they are flying somewhere and use them when they go on a trip at a store that allows it.

Morgon
Morgon

Add it to your Amazon balance. Especially great if you have an awkward amount left on the card.

bob
bob

get a GoBank card, and a Walmart Moneycard. you can load those at the registers with “debit” – and they allow $3000/mo each (if not more, the limit may not actually exist). Empty thru Billpay or Moneypass ATMs

JP
JP

Simon is known to be related to some shut-downs. Some cards do not even earn anything with Simon.

86
86

Which ones?

bob
bob

Amex. Level-3 data tip them off and you dont’ earn even base points, much less MSR/SUB’s

Fred
Fred

I am not really familiar with this, so can someone clarify for me: is there any difficulty using VGCs from Simon Mall for “normal” purposes (i.e., paying for my insurance/utilities/groceries)?

J
J

I’ve had better luck with Simon than other cards. As an example, Progressive didn’t take metabank from Safeway, but did take Simon. Both registered online.

Aahz

No problem at all. They work everywhere credit cards are accepted.

Tall T
Tall T

What’s the point of buying them? To hit a sign up bonus?

Fred
Fred

For me it’s a bit theoretical unless they offer them online, in part because there’s no Simon Malls around me. But it would be great to get online shopping rewards rate (or close to it) on something I could use to pay my bills.

Frogger
Frogger

Why wouldnt.you just use your credit card directly?

Fred
Fred

Wouldn’t get online shopping rate if I was using my credit card directly to pay insurance or utilities.

frogger
frogger

What card has an online shopping bonus? None of mine do and I have about 50 credit cards.

Fred
Fred

BofA cash rewards (if you choose that as a category).

Newbie
Newbie

Fred, which category do you use for BofA to pay insurance and utilities? Does it make 5% for premier accounts holders?
Edit: So you mean buy vgc from simon (online category) and use it to pay ins. Brilliant idea.

Burton

US Bank Cash+ has 5% utilities as a category. Not my favorite card but 5% fast food & utilities plus 2% grocery adds up quickly with my family.

Gaurav
Gaurav

Just to clarify American Express cards are still earning points for ongoing (non signup bonus spend) at Simon Malls, correct?

Tall T
Tall T

That is what people say, I’ve not tried it since last year so I’m not sure.

Put 10k on a AmEx plat bus card at simon about 2 mo ago. Should have received 15k – GOT 0 POINTS!

This has been reported in a lot of places. Amex is a no go for this.
