Our Verdict

Use a card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores. There is also an amex offer for 35% back at office supply stores.

This deal came a day late. I just purchased a $100 GC yesterday to take advantage of the AMEX/Staples $25 cash back deal that I had only on one card.

Planned on saving that one until holidays, but will use next week instead. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/targeted-amex-offer-staples-spend-100-receive-25-statement-credit/

Earlier this year these were working on Plastiq only charging 1% transaction fee. The other mastercards did not but these did. I am hoping that is the case still so I can pay my mortgage for the next few months.

Please report if that works.

potatoslayer
potatoslayer

The fee showed up as 1% on plastiq

Siv

I thought Plastiq charges a 2.5% fee?

potatoslayer
potatoslayer

They normally do, however these earlier this year were processing as debits and only charging 1%. I only had a few cards at the time.

I use a Huntington Voice Rewards card that gives 3% back with office supplies/utilities. Plastiq transactions earn 3% back, so there’s a .5% profit on the transaction. However, if I can get these cards to work, it will be 2% profit on my mortgage payment.

OneVanilla MC’s are 1% fee on Plastiq, FYI. I have no idea what these are, I had assumed 1% before I read your comment.

They also used to work with Venmo but sadly no longer. 🙁

If you can BB, you are better off loading there for free then paying your mortgage from that account. I did that this month.

After several adding/removing cards, your will no longer be able to add any cards.

Not sure what you mean? To paying the Mortgage thru BB? Billpay is easy.

dumb question, but how do you pay your mortgage with these? multiple $200 checks?

potatoslayer

Yes. 198.02 payments. My mortgage is only $350

I just use it to pay off the principle not monthly payment. In the memo field I just make a note that the check should apply to the principle with the account #. Done that many times without problem

still doesn’t mean the servicer will credit it correctly 🙁 they get paid off the unpaid balance, so they have an incentive to incorrectly credit payments to escrow no matter what you specify, and then you have to call in to fix. always check your mortgage account, even if things have worked smoothly in the past….

Can confirm 1% fee on these

Here we go againnnnnnnnn

I will attempt this. Yesterday I bought a Blackhawk MCGC at safeway and it loaded just fine to BB without a PIN required. Anyone tried the Metabank MCGCs at BB recently?

Join the discussion…What is BB, best buy?

Bill
Bill

Bluebird. You load your BB account with a BB debit card at Walmart – almost any cashier can do it.

Lantean
Lantean

What kind of BB do you recommend? I haven’t had one in a while and when I looked into it now seems like they have fees… are they still worth it?
Thanks.

raekwon
raekwon

There’s only one kind of BB card and it’s largely fee-free. Are you thinking about Serve?

Lantean
Lantean

Aha, you’re right I guess… but we don’t have Walmart here… does BB have fees for reload at CVS or RiteAid?

raekwon
raekwon

They load to BB just fine, but Change Payment/PIN is sometimes required. They cannot be loaded to Serve at WM, but they can at DG/FD.

These Staples gift card deals keep coming fast and furious. But such a mixed blessing: very lucrative, but also a PITA to get rid off.

Wayne

I use the Square app. There’s a small fee, but it’s offset buy the money back on the credit card used for the purchase.

YoniPDX

Wayne

What Kinda of Velocity ? i.e. how much and is it attached to a personal acct or Biz checking acct? I have both and I have mixed in the odd GC card here an there.
TIA

Wayne
Wayne

I use a personal checking account. I only buy the gift cards when I can make money or if there is a credit card sign up bonus I need to complete in a short period of time. I’ve done several thousand with no issues in the past. Most of the time it’s only a few hundred monthly.

YoniPDX

Thanks, that helps, what card issuers (Chase, Amex?) have you used meet MSR? Thanks Just curious who’s friendlier – it really shouldn’t be an issue to use a personal card to purchase an iterm from your business or vice versa – but sadly some don’t like it.

Visa and MasterCard most of the time. Amex had good offers now and then. Yes to MSR.

How’d you use square app with it.. I think they’ve closed my account for doing that before

Steve

Mr. Charles, why do you say, “Limit 1 per customer”, when the offer contains no such limit????

Celia
Celia

Probably from experience. Staples has been known to limit to one even if it doesn’t say it in the ad.

Steve
Steve

I have never had any problem doing multiple transactions, back-to-back, at Staples.

Celia
Celia

I haven’t either. But there have been a lot of DPs that say their stores limit them. I was more speculating on why Will put limit one in the post.

Traveler Tom
Traveler Tom

Mine strictly enforces the limit. 1 per person for the entire week. They know me since I buy 1 card every new visa/mc offer. I have tried and failed to get two, even when I needed to buy two for each of my daughters to use at college. Wisconsin dad.

Do these Meta Bank Mastercard work the same way as Meta Bank visa as far as paying for Money order is concerned? Is the default PIN the last 4 digits of the card? Are they more risky than their Visa counterpart as folks have noted on various forums? Thx

nick
nick

yes, pin is last 4 digits

Eric C
Eric C

I don’t know what you mean by “more risky” but just like most other MCGCs when you swipe it wants to default to credit so you have to manually switch it to debit to get them to work. Its more of a PITA when you want to split $200 with them as well since you have to click on the change payment button before they click on the process button.

StinkyPete1211
StinkyPete1211

By more risk, I think OP was referring to odds of MGC getting hacked. I believe those ‘riskier’ cards were issued by USB. It usually take me 3-4 weeks to liquidate my purchases and personally have not had any Meta MGC from previous sales compromised.

Can I use Maastercad now in Walmart to load gobank?

Gimg6dvhh@yahoo.com
Gimg6dvhh@yahoo.com

You mean Maaasta-cad?

Eric C
Eric C

Yes you can but it is still a PITA to load them because of the Change Payment trick.

Although the ad does not say limit one, the print out on the display does say limit one. Manager came by and approved me anyway – apparently the limit when there’s not a deal is five. The manager claimed she heard it from Mastercard to limit it to one but sold me four anyway. I’ll continue to bring up multiple ones to the register and see if I get shut down, and just buy one otherwise. Unfortunately with the closure of so many Staples in my area it’s not on my normal commute like Office Depots are.

YoniPDX

I hear you, I’m between two one is out by the Airport the other south of the city, I still have OD near me, used to have 4-5 that were near by.

Even If I get shot down on the 2nd free or told – one per – I still buy another 1-2 if MC with CIC card for 5X UR since I their anyway

Is there a personal CC that gives more than 2% Cashback on office supplies? Chase Ink isn’t an option for me since its a BZ CC (I know its easy to qualify for a BZ CC but I just can’t due to other factors). BoA CashRewards gives 3% on category of choice but none of the listed categories appear to cover OS. Huntington voice gives 3% on OS but I couldn’t get it. Any other suggestions please?

Bill

My staples says “limit of $2000” on the display. I’ve bought 2 Visa at a time with no problem last month, but only tried 1 MC yesterday. I was then able to load by BB at Walmart without changing payment type. It didn’t even ask for PIN.

I’m thinking I will try to buy 4 today, then load $400 at Walmart and see if it will just let me swipe twice without cashier manually splitting pmt. It seems the autodrain is maybe working?

How do you use a credit card to purchase a gift card when Staples does not allow you to use a credit card to pay for a gift card?

Celia
Celia

Try a different Staples? I’ve had no issues using a credit card at Staples to buy a gift card.

What is the benefits of buying these? Just to use staples offers? Or can you still MS these?

MS, at least this is what I do.

My local WMT doesn’t let me liquidate anymore. Any other ways to get rid of these through MS?

raekwon

Interestingly enough, a couple of local stores here have their own “one per customer” signs up (and enforce based on that), but I bought three a piece from two different stores this morning. Guess mileage really does vary per store.
