[Expired] Staples: No Purchase Fee On $200 Visa Gift Cards (11/3-11/16)

Deal has expired, view more Staples deals by clicking here.

11/10/19: Just a reminder that this deal continues for this week, through the 16th.

The Offer

Direct link to offer  (“see upcoming ad” page  11)

  • Staples is offering no purchase fees on $200 Visa gift cards at Staples stores.

The Fine Print

  • Valid November 3rd till November 16th
  • Limit one per customer

Our Verdict

Weird that the promo period is two weeks, I suspect that might be a mistake if I’m being honest. Use a card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores. There is also an amex offer for 35% back at office supply stores.

Hat tip to GC Galore

May do this to drain my Sakura Visa bonus in a safer (?) alternative.

john m
john m

I’ve already drained mine 1 day after I got it.

Brad
Brad

how’d you drain it?

john m
john m

I’m assuming ‘drain’ means to spend. I just bought a $100 gift card and used the other $100 to pay a utility bill. Checked the site and it says zero left. Works just like a credit card.

Brad
Brad

Yeah i realize that, i was wondering if you found a way to liquidate it the way you can liquidate a gift card.

I sold a gift card to a discount gift card site for cash and took a little loss. The gift card was something I couldn’t use. That’s all I know. .

If you’re willing to take a 3% loss look towards paypal. That’s how I liquidated mine

Except with CIC at 5%. Are you selling it P2P or on a website?

Rob

Same here. Quick and painless.

If the promotion is truly running for 2 weeks and it will be the norm going forward, than that’s great as long as they don’t run out of inventory the first day which would defeat the purpose to begin with.

rick b
rick b

If they’re running out of inventory that means they allow you to buy multiple cards per visit, which you should be doing as well. My problem is the 1 card a day limit, which makes it not worth the drive.

Dan
Dan

I was wondering about the limit.. fortunately there’s a staples near me but usually the highest cards such as 200 are sold out

Makes Sense. Nearing holiday season. Wouldn’t count on 2 week promotion norm after this one.

Thanks for the post, DOC.

Man, I just finished liquidating VGCs from the last couple of deals. Bring it!

barrytuneup
barrytuneup

I still have 3 MCGC to liquidate from last week promo! (out of 30 bought) Running out of Ink cards that have 25k limit. BOA cash rewards cards have 3% back in office stores. Stay away from Amex Simply biz and Amex simply cash. They report what you actually bought and can stiff you on 5% back.

Soulespada
Soulespada

How do you liquidate VISA GC or GC in general? Need to know for limited MS purposes

barrytuneup

MISTAKE.. BOA cash rewards is NOT 3% at office supply stores. Its the BOA Biz Advantage card. Sorry.

Celia

No issue here gettting 5% on Amex Simply Cash. Yes, they lost it on your statement but I still continue to get the 5% whatever I buy there, including gift cards.

Can’t speak from experience but in general I don’t think Chase cares either.

It’s technically not allowed, but whether they check is another story. If you GC for MS just don’t overdo everything and risk an account shutdown.

Can’t wait to turn these MCGC into VGC so I can actually liquidate instead of then just being phantom drained. BHN needs to pull their finger out of their ass.

I actually prefer MCGC because of Plastiq and the 1% rate.

The only way I know how to spend these gift cards are by buying with Ink cash and using them at Costco. Must be better ways?

Matt

You can bring them to a Walmart (or other store) and use them to purchase a money order. Make the MO out to yourself and deposit it in your bank. Best to use a bank that is not your primary bank in case they don’t like your shenanigans.

I pay current and upcoming insurance, cable bills online. I am sure there are many other ways to drain.

Keep in mind that if you have an Ink, you would have gotten 5x on the cable bill anyway so you’re not really upgrading your earning power.

Get a BlueBird account and just load up there. $5,000 is the monthly limit. Don’t buy MO that eats into your profit..

I beg to differ. Why go cash MOs at WM and waste my time and a few cents if I can load them on my phone?

siwallace

Join the discussion…I would love to know more about bluebird I went on the site but still unclear. How can I use the $200 prepaid visa and master cards and turn them into cash with a bluebird account. Many of my bills will not take a prepaid visa or MC or AMEX to pay balances. Any help would be appreciated. I saw I can withdraw money using moneypass for 0 fees but how do I load the MC and Visa to bluebird and withdraw cash. Step by Step guidance is appreciated for this newbie. TIA

I just used Amazon Business Amex w/ $25 off $100 Staples offer attached, credits posted without issue. However, my BBP is under $15K MSR, so to avoid SUB issues, I’m staying away from L3 GCs on that one. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/targeted-amex-offer-staples-spend-100-receive-25-statement-credit/

Amex’s terms for the BBP exclude gift cards from earning the 2% cash back.

avagyan

All of the WM near NY/NJ metro area received clear instructions (probably from MoneyGram) not to accept GCs (I’m an uber driver and tried all surrounding ones). I’ve even tried to use my regular bank debit card as a first card, but once they see the subsequent cards being GCs they just cancel the transaction (no receipt is given but money back to cards). It sucks to drive to far WMs and get denied MO. Despite having Ink Plus and Simplycash I’m buying only to meet the minimum spend and still not able to Liquidate these $200 ones. All of the known to me methods don’t work anymore. Can someone hint me a way to liquidate, Im in the hobby since US Mint dollar coins times but cant find any way now and I need the cash 🙂

Use BB or serve…

Have you tried reapplying? I was also shut down during the first wave. I reapplied over the summer and my wife and I got both the Serve and BB. I’ve had no problems loading for the last several months.

Did you try grocery stores where you can buy MO? They should be similar to WM, but there might be a limit of $500

avagyan
avagyan

Thanks. I found one where I go once a month, but they won’t let me split the payment. So it’s $.99 for $200 GC.
Pathmarks around here treat you as a criminal for buying the card let alone for liquidating them. You know of any grocery which lets you split the tender?

barrytuneup
barrytuneup

Pathmark? They closed years ago and Acme took over. But one in Brooklyn ghetto area survives.

avagyan

I’ve used old name but I meant Stop & Shop, many got converted to S&S now

AKJohnny
AKJohnny

dont be cheap… .99 to liquidate a $200 vgc isn’t bad at all… it’s almost $6 to use Paypal to do the same thing… almost 3% fee…

avagyan
avagyan

Not about being cheap. The one I have more luck with is far and allows to do only one and if I’ll go in few days they’d suspect me doing smth shady. Too much effort for 1000 UR points, but makes sense for meeting minimum spend with $500 ones.

Xinqing Wang
Xinqing Wang

Do you have a Kroger chain store in your place? That is the best place to buy MOs.

Barry Allen
Barry Allen

Get a BlueBird and load up there. $5,000 is the monthly limit. It’s free to load at Walmart. Go to any cash register, NOT Money Center and tell them, “Hi, I’d like to load money onto my BlueBird card.

siwallace
siwallace

Join the discussion…so do you load your bluebird card with the $200 on the prepaid visa or MC and then do you get the cash out from the bluebird card, or do you use the bluebird to pay bills. Many of my bills do not accept a cc payment or an amex payment. any help is appreciated. ty

barrytuneup
barrytuneup

did you try to set up GoBank acc? These liquidate easily at WM with no fee.If that does not work I can suggest certain grocery stores for 199.00 MO. Acme comes to mind but YMMV. Each clerk has their own rules. Hannaford in Hudson Valley and orange Co. NY also try.

Rowan
Rowan

+1 on the GoBank prepaid card. I’d read about them quickly doing shutdowns on anyone doing the load/unload dance but P2 and I have been able to keep ours alive for a couple of years now.

Max cash load limit of $3k on a monthly rolling basis. Unfortunately I’ve found I have to limit my loads at the checkout counters to one swipe because a lot of clerks get squirrelly when I ask for split tender and send me to the Money Center.

I typically try to go when they have a lot of checkout stands open so I can make multiple runs through on the same trip. And it helps to be able to double up by asking to “also load my wife’s card” which most seem to have no issue with.

I waive the $9 monthly fee by scheduling a $501 ACH push each month from my hub account then just pull it back out a week later. To unload I usually do billpays but you can also have checks sent to yourself or P2.

And a final tip to keep in mind – a lot of clerks in my area don’t remember the process for loading so it can be helpful to gently prompt them with “does 70 Action Code sound familiar?” in order to avoid having them call over a CSM if you’re trying to fly under the radar with your prepaids!

ChurnMagic
ChurnMagic

Is the ACH push free? What service should I look into?

Rowan
Rowan

Yeah most banks don’t charge for it. I use Ally as my hub account but you could probably do it with your current checking account. Just double check the fees disclosure to be certain.

86
86

“I waive the $9 monthly fee by scheduling a $501 ACH push each month…”

If you avoid the monthly fee w/out the deposit, they’ll shut you down eventually. It’s a poorly designed product almost requiring them to shutdown anyone who avoids the fee w/out a monthly DD, yet not paying the fee is allowed, according to their CSRs, if you have a zero balance on your monthly statement date.

scott Collin McClellan Barry Allen I have 2 active BBs (P1/P2) and 2 backup BBs that I never activated. I wonder what is a better strategy for backup BBs; activate them when the first 2 are shutdown (if Amex allows at that time)? Or activate them now but don’t load a penny until the other 2 go down? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Scott
Scott

Not sure if it matters. I’ve been exclusively using my Serve and hadn’t even activated my BB. When I heard about the recent shutdowns I activated the BB just in case. My Serve wasn’t shut down so I’m just going to keep the BB in a drawer for now.

Samosa
Samosa

Thanks. Sometimes I think of ordering another pair of BBs and activate them. This way I will have a total of 3 BB pairs; one activated and active pair, another activated but inactive pair, and a 3rd unactivated pair. But having too many BBs may draw unnecessary attention form Amex and result in shutdown. Its all speculative…..so yeh, lets keep enjoying the party while it lasts.

scott
scott

My only concern was that by not activating them for a long period of time they may shut it down for security reasons. That never happened after about 3-4 months with my BB.

It’s been that way for a long time, as long as you’re not doing it for SUB.
