The Fine Print

  • Valid 6/30/19–7/6/19.

  • See gift cards for details, terms, conditions and (if applicable) fees.
  • Limit 1 per customer.
  • Product may not be available in all states.
  • The Visa® Gift Card is issued by MetaBank®, Member FDIC, pursuant to a license from Visa® U.S.A. Inc. Card can be used everywhere Visa® debit cards are accepted in the U.S. No cash access.

Our Verdict

There is a stated limit of 1, it’ll be up to the cashiers to decide how much to enforce that. I believe in the past it was even possible to get more than one in a single transaction with no fee if the cashier was amenable, but not positive on that (update: working).

Use a card that earns a bonus at office supply stores, or stack with one of the following deals:

Office Depot/Max also has a deal on Visa gift cards this week with $10 off $300.

Dosh claims “Gift cards are not eligible for cash back”. Not sure if that’s true or not in fact.

I’ve been getting credited for Dosh with VGC.

I’ve only been getting gift cards at stapler and have been getting $5 from Dosh no problem.

Got $5 7 days in a row buying VGCs during the last promotion.

I am about 80% successful with Dosh. It always tracks but a few get cxld after a few days.

Do these stack?

Yes.

Dosh has stopped tracking for me a year ago, like anywhere at all. Anybody has that happened for you ? But happy I got a GC today, finished up my Amex offer as well. Had to go in right at the opening time and there were already only 3-4 VGC left on the rack. I heard the manager talking to the cashier that the limit is one per customer, not that it applied to me. Thanks !

“Staples stores will offer $200 Visa gift cards with no purchases starting Sunday” Think it should say no purchase fee?

William Charles

Sure should, let me fix

Use this with Chase offer for staples

My last Staples offer from Chase expired early in May. Perhaps I didn’t get another Staples offer because I didn’t use the last one?

Always ymmv. I used the last one, didn’t get this one.

Score! Was holding out for this and Chase offers.

I’m just regretting I had to report a stolen card due to fraud activity on my Chase card that had the Staples offer and it has not appeared on the new card yet.

L

Has your replaced card been given any chase deals yet? Mine was also recently replaced and I have no chase deals at all.. it’s not even available as a card option in the drop down

Ben
Ben

I had my card number changed after fraud and Chase offers are working fine — I see the ones activated before the change and more are available now.

Perfect timing! Still have some room on my Amex offer and i think it expires on same day!

CtownBin
CtownBin

True, I’m in the same boat. But, there is a downside to this- because in some stores they strictly enforce the limit of one VGC per customer when there’s a promotion, whereas when they’re on regular price you can buy as many as you want. Since the AMEX Offer is worth way more than the $6.95 fee, it would be risky to leave more than $200 of room on your AMEX Offer, since if you can’t buy more than 1 VGC it’s the last day and it will go unused.

qmc
qmc

Then buy a MCGC. I got limited to 1 VGC, so I got 1 VGC, 1 MCGC, and some amazon (I don’t have an amazon prime card, so this is how I normally get my 5% off)

Mimi
Mimi

A lot of stores have been reported to enforce the limit of 1 per customer while others continue to enjoy buying multiples up to $2K and get them all fee free. There’s some store management that took it further to 1 card per customer per day, no exception. People said the managers were monitoring cashiers to make sure they don’t sell more than one per customer.

For those who have to travel far to get to Staples, best to network with others in your area if limits are enforced so you can decide if buying one is worth it. Do NOT call the store to alert them of this offer, just bring VGCs to register and see how they ring up and if they allow more than one card per customer.

Anastasia
Anastasia

I have eight Staples stores within 20-mile radius from home/work, four of them enforce the limit and four others don’t care. One store didn’t even have VGCs on rack – you have to ask an employee to bring it from the back room. Three stores always ask me for an ID. So it’s highly YYMV, depends on management.
Also, DOSH worked in some stores and didn’t work in others.

Rob
Rob

When this type of promotion is on, there is one Staples that I go to never has these Visas; going periodically during the week, still none. When promotion is over next day, there is a bunch on the rack?!?

There is another Staples that ask for ID as well; what is up with that? I tell them “no” (I don’t have it or I won’t give it) and yet still let me purchase; just stop asking!!!

Ben W
Ben W

My uneducated guess is that they are required to participate by corporate, but by taking the cards off the shelf they are effectively declining to participate.

Rowan
Rowan

For anyone who isn’t already aware, some stores have a hidden storage area within the turn-table card rack. The door is held closed by magnets and if you’re lucky the staff playing games with stock availability might just have the $200’s stashed away there… YMMV on being yelled at for helping yourself though!

Jamie
Jamie

Yep. I was yelled at for opening the secret door myself. Was told to ask for help next time. I have no idea why. What’s the big deal?

Where are you located? Same here in Nova.

Mimi

Got lucky today with an out-of-town store that had signs: limit of 5 per customer. That is more than I need to meet a CC SUB. Was able them to GoB with no issues.

Good timing on this. Thanks Doc!

Keeping my fingers crossed that my friendly morning cashier is still letting me get 5 at a time….. His manager is a jerk, though. Last time they ran this, after the 4th day of the promo he just pulled all the $200 VGC’s and wouldn’t tell the cashiers why.

I hate when employees make up their own rules (probably because they’re jealous when they see customers get too many discounts)

tuphat
tuphat

They really aren’t making their own rules. They are simply trying to create a system/procedure/mechanism to “enforce” the limit clearly stated in the ad of “1 per customer.”

doc
doc

How the employees ring up items in a customer’s shopping cart is different from just not stocking items. Not sufficiently stocking items that are actually in stock is definitely making up one’s own rules. That’s a whole different matter than just telling customers that they can only buy one item per promotion.

Just because one customer tries to buy all of the items doesn’t mean the items should be made unavailable to everyone else. The store manager just needs to instruct the employees about the parameters of how to ring up the various promotions. It’s their job to know what to do.

If the manager has to hold every single employee’s hand on every single purchase, those employees probably shouldn’t be on the register.

During my run today the manager showed the CSR how to split tender so I could clean up 2 chase offers (CF and CFU) and put the balance on CIC. I love learning opportunities. Lol. Only went for 3 cards but no issues.

But, did she give you her number, in case you wanted to do extra studies?

JuicyJosh
JuicyJosh

Uh. It was a dude. And SO was there with me in case they had to ID for CFU which is not in my name. Like a boy scout I was prepared AF.But no ID needed this time.

Sometimes you just have to take one for the team… at least that is what happens to me. Maybe I should stop dressing in drag?

Does Staples store still sell Mastercard GC? I don’t see it online anymore. I’m having a hard time to liquidate VGC since the recent Serve hit.

If you registered/activated vgc just before you tried to unload them – that could be a reason. So try again next day.
It once worked for me.

IME, the meta $200 visa GCs from Staples are activated immediately at the register when we buy them. That’s why it’s easy to drain them quickly if there are nearby WMNMs or supercenter. What error msg do you get at the register when loading your S? If you’re sure you haven’t reached the max load of $5K per card (if you have two, you can load another $5K/month to S#2), read the code on the small paper that prints when you try to load your S. That’ll give you the reason for the load failure.

miafll
miafll

Normally it is activated at the register but I have seen an hour delay in the past. Yes, get fund not available at grocery store within 20 min of purchase as the grocery store is about 1/2 mile from Staples.
But once an hour or so had passed it worked as normal.
It does not happen every tine but it does happen occasionally with delay activation AT THE BANK’S END,even though your receipt says otherwise.

In NYC, so this always seems to be trickier, any tips appreciated! Will try the Staples for the first time. Was using a CSP rite aid discount to negate the purchase fees two weeks ago. Had to go to Queens for a rite aid that would allow the purchase without cash. Serve wouldn’t acknowledge the transfer, said it wasn’t a debit card. Ended up running it through PayPal after two different cashing stations couldn’t process. Thanks again in advancefor all the insights!

Mimi
Mimi

since you live in NYC, which btw, is one of the hardest to MS aside from SF Norcal. IIRC, I saw there’s Family Dollar (FD) in Brooklyn. I didn’t get to try loading my S while on vacation but from what I’ve read, people there succeeded in draining their VGCs at FD. Just make sure balance is available before you ask to load any amount to your S. Cashier will scan a barcode before you swipe your S card, tell them the amount you want to load and if successful, you will get your receipt. Let us know how it goes if you try it. GL.

Get out to Jersey! No problems buying but liquidation is hit or miss

which cashing station did you use? WM doesn’t take ovvgc to load S and my local riteaid only sells ovvgc.

PJ careful, staples has L3 data, using amex cc for SUB may not be wise

would i raise any alarms if i go hard w business ink preferred? thanks

Chong786
Chong786

Why would you go hard with your ink preferred when ink preferred only earns 1x UR on staples..

Use ink cash instead..

Mimi
Mimi

It’s possible nick has a new CIP and trying to meet his SUB. IMO, if one has a high credit line and MSR can be fulfilled w/o cycling CL, this is a good way to meet SUB w/o paying any fees. Problem with MOST new Chase CCs though, is the fraud alerts for high amounts for in-store purchase. IME, for new cards, I “season” them with online purchases, which, for whatever reasons, they do not block purchases.

calwatch
calwatch

I don’t know, I’d open a bank account to meet SUB before messing with store MS.

abe

Now that I no longer have my serve and bluebird accounts to liquidate GCs I will try paying one of my bills online with one of these VGCs since the utility company I get services from accepts online credit (no amex though) and debit card payments. I will just have to register my VGC online first.

Celia
Celia

That’s all I do, use them for organic spend. Nowhere around me (WM, FD, etc) lets me use these to buy MO.
