[Expired] Staples: No Purchase Fee On $200 Visa Gift Cards (9/1-9/7)

Deal has expired, view more Staples deals by clicking here.

The Offer

Direct link to offer (p15)

  • Staples is offering no purchase fees on $200 Visa gift cards in store

The Fine Print

  • Valid 9/1-9/7
  • Limit 1 per customer

Our Verdict

This isn’t as good as the current Office Depot deal, but it’s hard to get enough of these types of deals (plus that deal won’t be available when this goes live). Use a card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores, American Express also has an AmEx offer for Staples.

Under the fine print is says, “Valid 8/4 – 8/10”. I think you meant 9/1 – 9/7.

Anyone knows if the discount will work for visa gift cards issued by sunrise bank? In the term, it says meta bank. But in the store near me, they only have $200 by metabank.

Should work.

Trent

Worked for me… they only had the sunrise left and the cashier let me have three … wish I had tried for more

It’s hard to keep up with this kind of supply for MS.

Meaning there’s too frequent promos? Lol my local store has a hard limit of 1 per day so….

NBG

Ya. And there is only so much one can cash out with limits.

Considering you can do 4 VGC at WM per transaction and hit multiple WM in a day I’d say there’s not too much limit.

Can anyone point me to a thread or post that outlines, step by step, how to go about purchasing MO’s at WM using these?

You just need to read everything you can find.

Nick

At some point you have to do the reading and put the pieces together yourself. A little trial and error will help you develop mental toughness as well

Any MO purchase is YMMV depending on the cashier/rep you get. Exception is if there is a policy against it/cash only, then its a no go. Either way start small, be polite even if they shoot you down, and then you can go from there.

Here is a DoC high level overview of some of the policies. If you google what you want to do there is also a Flyer Talk post that should be pretty comprehensive if you also review the comments.
https://www.doctorofcredit.com/memo-walmart-moneycenter-changes-1000-money-order-requires-id-verification-bill-pay-limited-to-8000-per-30-days/

You may also want to ask at your local grocery store to see if they sell MO to debit cards. Some are cash only, but not all. It’s also nice for me as well I’m there I can zero out any random small balance GC I have at the self checkout.

ctj
ctj

you just go to WM and try to buy one. the trick isn’t how to do it – it’s whether your local WM lets you. that’s it.

Ryan
Ryan

That and finding a reliable bank to deposit the MOs…or I should say banks, so you have backups when one account gets shut down.

James
James

If you’re fortunate enough let WM split multiple $200 transactions, then you can end up with larger denomination MO, which you can then cash at WM for a $3 up to $1000. Small cost of doing business if someone is concerned about depositing MO into a bank account.

Does this mean buy the card for $6.95 and $200.will be on it? This is the way I’m reading this. Because I sure can use it!

Torg
Torg

And then you could use the card you bought to buy 28.77 more cards!

Unfortunately it’s just that they’re selling a $200 VGC for $200 instead of 206.95. Which is great for people who can get 5% back on the purchase with an Ink card or similar.

Yeah, sure, Staples is going to give you $193.05.
Off to Bora Bora you go, have fun.

It’s hard to go for it after spending 7.1k and making $92 profit plus 36.000 UR.

only 7.1k??

Yes, only 7.1k, because in my area cashiers are enforcing one transaction per costumer.

I’ve never seen Staples and OD offer these so frequently. It seems like each week one or both of them are doing this.

They closed all the OD/OfficeMax in NYC and Long Island unfortunately

Hard to make this worth my time with a hard limit of 1 (sometimes 2) per day. I’d be interested to hear if anyone still has locations allowing more than 2 per day since the last round.

Nick
Nick

At my location it depends entirely on the person behind the counter. I have gotten as many as 5 at a time multiple times a day with a good cashier

Dude

wut? A lot of stores are enforcing one for the whole period. I even reached out the HQ and they agree with them. There was a memo that went out last month, and 6 stores denied me on that grounds, i.e. gave me one card only and told me that they would not sell me anymore

barrytuneup
barrytuneup

if you read the terms it states 1 card limit!!!

TheTaxman_Cometh

Last time around I was 4/6 of my locations still allowing $2k at a time.

Ric

Where is this?

JuicyJosh

Same experience as TheTaxman_Cometh , majority of stores here allow 2k per swipe. The one per visit stores are less frequent.

most cashiers only allow $400 max, but occasionally can find one that is new and is unfamiliar with “rule”. however, I pass by my store twice/day so is not big deal buying only $400 at a time.

Skaner
Skaner

Pretty much every store in my area has a different limit. Some 200, some 400, some 600 and some 2000.

slowbrake

Mine regularly do 5 to 6.

I’ve never been stopped, although I’ve been told things like ‘the limit is [the exact amount I’m purchasing]’

Is there any other way to use GCs except for actual spends or BlueBird. Walmart is very far from where I stay. Just wondering alternative way of using GCs

slowbrake
slowbrake

Buy MO, other prepaids, pay CC by phone, Kiva loans.

They are nice for actual spend, pay anything with 5% off baked in – taxes, insurance, tuition, medical bills, licenses, etc.- and if you’re paying your card off regularly you can get 4-8 weeks before it even becomes float.

Happy
Happy

slowbrake Not sure how one can use VGC to pay CC via phone. I just tried to pay for Discover but the automated system asked for a routing number.

slowbrake
slowbrake

I’ve only done it with Citi, by calling in and speaking with CSR.

BoA may also allow it, but I can’t speak to personal experience.

Curmudgeon

I paid my dentist with a few no-fee $200 Mastercards from a prior promo. Since I bought them with my Ink card, it was like getting a 5% discount and I didn’t have to go to Walmart to get rid of them.

Shane
Shane

Just had the manager ring me up and said I could do another transaction if I wanted to. Said it makes him look good by having lots of revenue. Walked out with 20 gift cards today. I used a different credit card and rewards number for the second transaction to avoid triggering any alerts.

Jeff

Does anyone still have luck purchasing more than 1 card at a time?

Monica

Always works for me

barrytuneup
barrytuneup

yes.. out of 4 Staples in my geographic are.. 2 only sell 1 card to me..other 2 sell me 10 per day. There is a hard limit of 2k anyway..but can go back a few times during the week and wind up with lots of cards.

Ric
Ric

Where?

raekwon
raekwon

Usually, yeah. The store closest to me enforces 1/customer/day, but others in the area don’t give af.

Ric
Ric

Is this close to VA?

raekwon
raekwon

Actually, let me correct what I said earlier. Around the end of the last promotion, one of the stores I’d usually get 2+/transaction at received a POS update that would only apply the discount to one card per transaction. Completely forgot that happened.

Tanya
Tanya

I’ve considered that in order to enforce the 1 per customer restriction it could be hard coded, but it would have to be tied into a rewards system like Safeway/Kroger, OR coded to 1 per transaction – which sounds like the update you saw was. Last promo I got 5 at a time, but a cashier will call a manager sometimes on it who just looks at my credit card/ID. I’ll be expecting this change to come and not be surprised when it does, it’d suck having 5 cards in hand and only getting the discount on ONE!!! THANKS for the warning.

For those who have more than one staples in the area that also isn’t cleared. Im jealous, hit it hard.

My Staples location allows for multiple cards in a single purchase, multiple times during the week, and usually don’t run out, even as late as the last day. The other Staples, about 5 miles away restocks several times during the week and also allows multiple. I don’t MS like others though, Walmarts around here don’t allow MOs with these. I use to pay bills that I can’t get more than 2% from other cards on.

to show stockholders that they have great volume..They dont care if there is a profit in it..just high numbers. Same thing Amex and others do on their Blue cash cards.. Giving 3/5/6 % back shows the stockholders they have tremendous volume. But probably losing in the long run.

Looking at the big bank financials, they are making plenty. Rewards are part of marketing and getting the public, like those on here, to talk about the benefits of their cards and draws customers. It’s also been proving and publicly stated that airlines who offer “free” seats to those with enough “miles” actually make a profit on your “free” seat. It’s all built into the system and the reason reward programs continue to thrive. Who wants a card without rewards? A “reward” is simply a rebate just like manufacturer coupons which get the public into liking a product. Loyalty pays. There really are no “losers” when a marketing campaign/reward program is talked about and a brand gets recognition.

Jack Jones
Jack Jones

Your logic doesn’t make sense in this situation. 99% of the buyers of these gift cards are people who are MS’ing and aren’t buying anything else in the store except these gift cards. So they end up losing money on each gift card. And then when they get the person who wants to just buy 1 gift card along with a few supplies and they get to the store and find the store is out of visa cards because they allowed 1 person to buy $7,000 of cards, they annoy the customer who might have actually bought something and made the company money. There is no marketing going on when the MS’ers are allowed to buy up all the cards.

They’re no longer a public company.

All 3 walmarts around me repositioned the card readers in plain sight of the cashier. I’ve been shut down since. Would love to know of any other routes to loading BB.
