Staples: Purchase $300+ In Visa Giftcards, Get $20 Visa Rebate (01/22-01/28)

[Reposting now that it’s live.]

The Offer

Direct link to offer (p5)

  • Staples are offering a $20 Visa gift card via easy rebates when you purchase $300 or more in Visa gift cards between January 22nd and 28th.

visa gc

The Fine Print

  • Limit of one
  • Valid from January 22nd until 28th

Our Verdict

This is the best of the gift card rebate offers as it’s for $20 and you can purchase Visa gift cards (and the rebate is a Visa) making it much easier to unload. Make sure you use a credit card that earns at a high rate on office supply store purchases.

if i don’t live a WM or a grocery store that sells MO… how do I unload?
🙁

Regular spend will still get you 5x UR on regular purchases plus an extra 1.5% on the bonus gift card after fees.

Lantean
Lantean

right, well, the problem is that major bulk of my regular spend is travel, restaurants or grocery… most of these already give me 5x, 3x, or 2x… yes, it’s not consistently 5x but still, it feels like one should not be using a prepaid Visa somewhere where I would get bonused earnings already.
dilemma.

Yeah, the idea is you can use these in areas where you might not be getting category spend. You also have to look at the point values of those multipliers. If you get 5X points on Ink and value you those points at $0.02 then you are effectively earning 10% cash back if redeemed for $0.02 per point.

On top of the ~$8-$10 you get back from the difference in the rebate card and the activation costs you are netting (5x$300)*$0.02 = $30 on top.

You can then calculate the opportunity cost of using another card, lets say 2% on all other purchases for that $300 in gift cards you have now. Comes out to $6. Even if you were able to redeem for 3% cashback, you would still only net $9 from the credit card spend as opposed to the gift cards.

So, depending on where you are doing you non-category you could profit $30 from this deal or 10% ROI.

Hope this helps.

good discussion, altho public. i will only add this, get rid of those GC ASAP and dont bother using gradually for regular spend. these GCs are hacked. always assume all GC hacked and waiting to drain ur balance after activation.

Alan
Alan

@NinjaX,

Rebate GCs are never hacked. However, GCs you buy in stores and/or PayPal Digital may be.

If you’re into merchant GC reselling it shouldn’t be too hard. For instance you could unload $150 on the ongoing Newegg Nike GC deal and make a profit on that resale transaction as well. Record keeping is key.

Frequent Miler had a good article today about different options for credit card spending. Most of those options could be applied to a Visa Gift card. For me Plastiq is a good option for paying my mortgage and I am eyeing paying my taxes in a month or two.

Is this limit 1 per household, similar to last time? Or can I buy one with my wife’s name, but same address as me?

Sucks for me. No Staples near me. Does raise the hope that OM may come out with another deal though in the near future to finish off my annual $50k on the Ink+ before I go to Hawaii at the end of February..

Justin
Justin

50k for 2017 already? Do you have a huge spike in spending January/February of every year?

Pretty useless. You have to buy $200 and $100. So pay $8 in fees to get $20 back. And spend $10 in gas and car wear and tear to get to staples.

You get $2 back.

There must be a reason staples runs these obviously money losing promotions all the time. Being generous to you is not one of them.

CtownBin
CtownBin

I don’t know how much gas costs where you live or how far you live from a Staples, but I’m pretty sure that for most of us the gas/wear and tear is nowhere even close to $10. I drive 10 min out of my way and I’d be shocked if I’m spending even $1 in gas. For most, this deal is a free $10 and 2000 UR, that’s not bad at all. And if you have a spouse or someone else living at your address, make that $20 and 4000 UR for not much time at all.

Staples runs these as a loss leader- in short, a way to get you into the store, where you’ll hopefully buy other things. Very common in the retail industry. Staples has been running this exact one every couple of months for years.

Steve
Steve

No, your spouse won’t qualify. The limit is one rebate per household.

Dan
Dan

Pretty sure you can only do one per address

Lantean
Lantean

that’s correct.

rebate limit 1 per HOUSEHOLD

I think the best way to do it is use per diem mileage cost given out by irs. Was around 40c/mile?

So thats $4 if a staples is 5 miles away. If it’s 10 miles away its $8. Not including the cost of your time.

Then the time/cost to liquidate it. Some Walmart cashiers will not accept gift cards and they are pretty sure they are defending the USA from catastrophe (aka lost cause reasoning with them. And you need to come back. ) The value is only in the UR points. If you have a lot of them already why do you care about 2000 more. If you don’t have a lot of them already, why do you care about 2000 points?

The five back was no Brainer. This is not a no brainer. The value is subjective for most people. Not bad if you are going to staples and Walmart anyway and they happen to be next to each other.

Worth it

I pass a staples, two USPS, one super-center, and one neighborhood market on my way to work. Worth it.

What kind of car are you driving that takes $10 of gas and wear and tear to get to staples???

Can they all be in the same transaction? As in, if i do 4×200 in one transaction can I claim 2 rebates or does it have to be split into 2?

Must split into separate transactions.

Well, a good use for one of those 5Backs still around from Simon that you can’t use by the 20th for CVS. $400 will get $20 back + $20 rebate less fees. Works for me!

My Staples won’t allow me to use a visa gift card (or Amex or MC giftcard) to buy another visa gift card. I’d be surprised if you can get away with it, but good for you if it works

Brock

I used my 5Backs to get 12 $200 cards in 3 separate transactions. Worked for me. You need to tell them it is a Debit Card.

Why do you have to tell them it’s debit? Can’t you just swipe and run as debit without saying anything?

In case they say that you cannot use a gift card to buy gift cards.

NO $300 vgc no deal!

Mist Soalar

Yeah, they do have $300 denomination VGC online, but this rebate is in-store only.

We essentially have to pay 2X activation fees. Small and unscalable margin.

“Limit 1 per household” – is that overall? Or limit 1 per household per day that the promo runs?

very simple offer… buy 2 200 cards. Can use 3 addresses as long as different. I use mine and 2 sons. (3 different emails also, you have to keep track) I Buy 2 200 cards and 2 200 cards with 2 different Ink cards at same Staples. I walk to these stores as I work near grand central in NYC. I then walk to another Staples in the area and use a Amex simply biz. for 2 more cards. The points add up quickly and the 3 20.00 VGC come via US mail about 5 weeks later. Been doing this for 3 years and flawless. I do it when they have the MCard offers also.

Brock
Brock

You can buy all at the same staples as long as they are different transactions. I bought 6 cards in 3 transactions at the same store, same time.

Beth
Beth

You don’t have to use different credit cards and you don’t have to go to different stores. It just has to be separate transactions.

Noob question here:

My girlfriend is trying to find a way to pay a $1500 deposit for graduate school with a credit card, but the school only takes check or money orders. Can she use multiple Visa gift cards to buy that money order? Post Office the best place to buy it? Thanks!

Most folks who like office supply Visa/Mastercard gift cards:
1. have Chase Ink Plus Visa offering 5x Ultimate Rewards at office supply stores
2. are meeting minimum spend for credit card sign up bonuses
With this deal you are buying Visa gift cards below their face value. Is it worth it to you?
