Are you able to liquidate the vgc by buying MO at Walmart. I just tried and was told they stop accepting gift card 1 month ago.
Has anyone added this Visa GC to Samsung Pay and used Samsung Pay to purchase MO at local grocery store or Walmart? Does Samsung Pay reflect the underlying properties of the card added to the mobile wallet? For example, if the added card can work both as debit or credit, does the POS reader prompt you for pin when you pay using Samsung Pay? Thx
It seems we can’t add these VGCs from Meta Bank to SPay. It throws error saying the bank (MetaBank) doesn’t support Spay for these cards.
My Sunday Staples runs when these happen usually consist of 6 or 7 stores (Mon-Sat runs are anywhere from 1-3). Hit 6 today and two of them were “out” of $200 VGCs and were acting like they hadn’t had any in since the last promotion a couple of weeks ago.
How do you liquidate these?
Lots of hand sanitizer!
Office max and depot has $10 off 100. Just picked it up, plus they got hand sanitizer too. Total Still <$100 😁
Office depot is running visa giftcard promo $10 off when you spend $100+. 7/5-7/11/2020
Hmmm, can anyone confirm this? I’ll be heading by an Office Depot today.
if so, can skip staples unless i’m close by
Went to my local odom, no current promotions
I can confirm. 10 off 100 in OM
Conme , what state are you in? Any online advert for this or is it YMMV?
Iowa. One of the store didn’t have any signs, but the discount is applied at the register
Thanks, might call ahead to see if they’re offering it then.
disregard, i checked out and discount rang up. unadvertised promotion going on
Kelly what state are you located in? Any online advert for this?
I got it in Texas. The employees haven’t gotten around to putting up all the flyers yet but it was definitely in one of the sales flyers to put up
I’m in GA. These aren’t advertised online.
Unadvertised but discount rang up at register as usual. You do NOT need to go thru the transaction if the discount does not show up after “Print Receipt” entry (either by you or by the cashier on his screen). The discount wont show up until after that step in our area’s stores. Yet NEVER have a deal posted on blog not works in our area.
Can confirm promo is live in CA, unfortunately, no $500 cards in my area.
The last time an office supply store had $500 card probably was 5 or 6 years ago. just so you know and not search in vein.
Oh, thanks for the heads up, I wasn’t aware of that. So how do most people liquidate these?
Spend on everything. My normal monthly cc bill is around $1,000, so I get $4,000 worth of gift cards and spend instead of cc spend for the next 4 months.
So you buy 20 gift cards? Is it worth it? With taxes a $200 card purchase for me came out to $196.95 earlier today. That’s a $3.05 or a bit over 1.5% of $200 in savings. If you were to get charged the same in your area you’d be netting $61 or so on your purchases. Do you calculate the gas you spend on the driving?
The purpose isn’t to save the $3.05 on a $200 purchase. That’s just a minor bonus. The whole purpose of doing this is to do it with a Chase Ink Cash card. It gives 5x points on purchases from office supply stores. When I bought $4,000 in Visa gift cards from Staples in a single store visit, it gave me 20,000 Chase UR points. That’s the equivalent of a domestic round trip flight on most airlines.
The deal at OD/OM is nowhere as good as the Staples deal for that purpose, because you only save $10 off your total purchase, not 100% of the fees on every card. I just do the OD/OM deal to fill in. I bought 4 cards yesterday for $800. That gives me 4,000 Chase UR points. I’ll fill in more later this week, but for the OD/OM deal, I only buy 1 card per visit.
Thanks, I normally don’t travel much, even before covid. I’m in CA but have only ever traveled out of CA to vegas and that’s been only about 6 times in my 30 years or so, most of it as a kid. When this is all over it’d be nice to maybe take a trip here or there. Thanks for the tip.
HAC – If you don’t have a Chase Ink Business Cash Visa card, I wouldn’t bother with this deal. Most other cards will only give 1x Chase UR points. It’s the fact that the Chase Ink Cash gives 5x points at Staples that makes this a deal. The 20,000 Chase UR points I received from the $4,000 Staples purchase will cover the cost of a roundtrip domestic fight when I want to take it.
I just started travel hacking last October, and in 9 months, I’ve already earned more than 500,000 points. Example, the Chase Hyatt card gave me 50,000 points which is enough for 6-10 hotel nights. I’ve got 170,000 Chase UR points which should get my wife and me to Europe (when it opens) via Business class with lots of points leftover. I’ve got 176,000 Southwest points and a free Companion Pass for my wife for 2020 and 2021. The Southwest points alone should net us about 7-10 free roundtrip flights through the end of next year. Our flight to Tampa was completely free due to points from travel hacking. We’re scheduled to go to Cancun in November, and the flights were free (other than the points).
Join 10xTravel on Facebook. They walk you through how to do it all, and they haven’t charged me anything for the education.
HAC – BTW – We’re staying at the JW Marriott Resort in Cancun when we’re there, and everybody had the same exact price for a King room with Oceanview. When I checked on SouthwestHotels.com, they had the same cash price, but they also offered 24,000 Southwest points back to me as part of the deal. My flight started at 28,000 points, so when I get the 24,000 back from the hotel, it makes my only spend a net 4,000 points out of the 176,000 I started with. We’re liable for the $85 each in taxes for the flights, but my wife’s AmEx Biz Platinum card reimburses our taxes to us, so the total expenditure on our flights to Cancun is just the 4,000 SW points.
Yeah, I only have a Ink Business Unlimited but can’t apply for the Business cash card until later since I just got my Sapphire last month, I think it’s recommended you wait 3-4 months before applying for another card, right? I’ll definitely check out that FB group.
I’m a newb to all this, usually only doing $500 cards at a time but want to try larger amounts. How difficult is it to get more than 1 of these at a time? Or does it track your card and limit to how many times that card gets used for a GC?
It’s really store dependent. My closest store up north has been hassling me about more than 1 per day during sales going back at least a year, but here in Virusland (aka Florida) no issues buying 10 cards ($2,000 is the hard limit per transaction). I don’t think there is any card tracking. I went to the same staples store twice when they last ran this deal a few weeks ago, and bought 10 cards for $2K each time with the same credit card with no issues.
It’s also sometimes CSR dependent. Younger CSRs seem to be a bit more flexible with the limits. YMMV of course
Mike , I appreciate the reply, thanks
Hey mike, where in FL? I live here as well and there is hard limit of 1 unless friendly manager lets me get 2
The Staples in Broward county from managers to cashiers, is ONE card per day. In fact most cashiers cannot sell VGC – must be handled by manager.
I honestly think those DPs on how many cards one can get on one visit is MEANINGLESS because it is not only highly depending on WHERE you are, but even which cashier you are dealing with.
By now even the newest newbies should know one of the cardinal rules in this is, YMMV is one thousand percents true.
If you are talking about Staples, here in the virus land (Broward county FL), the 1 per customer per day is STRICTLY ENFORCED.
So it depends on WHICH part of FL you are at, on how the transaction is handled. Saying FL is meaningless just sayin.
Wasn’t saying Florida is wide open. I was just using the closest store to me in each location as examples to support the point that it is store dependent. The one here in Virusland does not enforce the limit, the one up north does.
what city and store? thx
I was able to buy (20) $200 Visa Gift Cards in a single transaction at the Staples on Marie in Tampa, FL. It’s the one one the southeast edge of the Tampa Airport. I asked the manager for permission first, and she approved. Good luck.
thx rick, i appreciate it. that would actually be worth a drive for me as i live in palm harbor. any certain way you worded it and was it store man or just floor manager?
Nick:
It was the first time I’d ever taken advantage of the Staples deal, because I had only received the CIC card in April, so this was the first time they ran the deal after that.
I found the store manager when I first entered. I told her I run a youth baseball organization, (the organization name is on my CIC card), and I’ve got 10 teams with 2 coaches each. I told her I’d like to get a $200 card for each coach as a way of saying thanks through the COVID headache. She approved my request immediately without asking any details, and she walked over and told the cashier it was OK. I checked out without any problem, except Chase texted my phone to ensure the $4,000 purchase was actually me. Once I texted approval back, Chase allowed the transaction to go through. 20,000 Chase UR points arrived on my next statement!
Here’s the funny thing. They don’t have Staples near me in the Milwaukee area, but I was on a 9 day vacation in FL, and I was flying home that afternoon. That’s why I went to the store by the airport… Good Luck!
i appreciate that rick. tyvm for an explanation and for sharing.
Yeah last week I bought 20 $200 cards because I told the cashier it was for each one of my wives and he was cool with that. True story
Utah Staples are the best
Hey, Ken. I just stopped at Office Max, and the manager let me buy (6) $200 Visa Gift Cards on separate transactions, so I received the $10 discount off on each one of them. She said they’re limiting customers to 6 per day, so I told her I’d see her at lunchtime tomorrow. I figured you were past-due for some more whining about other people having more success than you so I thought I’d let you know. Let your whining begin! LOL. That’s another 6,000 Chase UR points in the bank…
We never have a problem in few stores I go. Cashier is instructed to give 10 per person per day. I go with a friend and get 20 each visit. Just have 6K to spend now to complete my 100K for this card member year ( 2 Ink cash and 1 Ink preferred)
So you just grab 10 cards and go to the checkout or just pick up one then ask the carrier if you can get 9 more?
just grab 10 at a time, finish my $2k payment. handover my Ink to my friend behind me and he does his 10 on my card. Doing it for a very long time now, so manager and cashier knows me.
Do you have to checkout one card a time? How could the cashier be so nice..
I get that I’m about to ask a newbie-type question, but how are you liquidating so many cards a month? Thanks in advance.
I’m not liquidating $4,000 worth of gift cards in a single month. I didn’t know how often Staples runs the deal, but they hadn’t run it for the prior 7 weeks, so I got enough to cover 3-4 months’ worth of monthly spending. And now if I’ve got a big purchase that comes up, I can use several of them on that. Example – My daughter bought her first house, so my housewarming gift was a $500 battery powered lawn mower. I used 2 1/2 $200 gift cards on the purchase and got 5x points on the purchase.
Wouldn’t big purchases be better made on the card itself in case warranty something goes bad and you need to return it?
Not to mention the extra warranty.
What warranty am I missing out on by spending these gift cards on medical bills, home/auto insurance, groceries, electric bill, gas, or restaurants?
Even without warranty that’s a ton of spend I feel…is what I was going to write but decided to stop and check against my own expenses and see I’ve spent a bit over 5K since April. Given that new information I may transition to maybe spending this way instead with the exception of 5% categories I can churn back into money orders.
Yeah you don’t really need to do it in a single month if you don’t want too. Sometimes if I have a few left to liquidate and my CC payment is coming due, I’ll just pay off the CC and deposit the MOs as I get them. Do what you are comfortable with. I’ve worked up over time myself and am comfortable liquidating up to 10K in a single month. That obviously fluctuates.
Is there any other “Dosh-like” app offering staples in-store deal? Looks like DOSH is for Staples.com only.
Payce
https://paycepays.com/
5% back up to $5/day.
Deal has be to re-activated every month.
They also have CVS and OD/OM deals.
fantastic!! I have never tried Payce but will do. If they have a referral program it will be a pleasure to use your referral.
slowbrake viewed DoC post on Payce, comment section has some complaints regarding payout. Have you successfully received cash back from Payce? Not just tracking but the actual payout? https://www.doctorofcredit.com/payce-cashback-program-review-earn-cashback-at-top-retailers-in-store-or-online-5-signup-bonus/
Yes. I reviewed my checking account, it may go back farther but for 2020
Payce sent Jan 20th – in my checking on Jan 22nd
Feb 25th – received March 4th
April 20th – received April 24th
May 20th – received June 8th
June 20th – not received yet (July 2nd)
I haven’t been abusing this and they’ve paid about $100 so far in 2020.
Thanks, I am in. Let’s see how much of MS they can handle.
Samosa
Dont get too excited.
Tracking is inconsistent and payout takes forever (my first payout a few months ago was like 6 months after the charges posted).
On the positive side, they also have the same deal for OD/OM, but that one has in my experience even more problems with tracking lately.
Obv ymmv. Good luck… 🙂
Jay - ⒿⒶⓨ 🙈 🙉 🙊 thanks for sharing your experience. I tried it today on Staples deal…Payce hasn’t tracked it yet….will see.
I’ll repost that post, thanks for the reminer.
I think it may be $5 per month for each deal now. Once I hit $5 cash back (first purchase), subsequent purchases in that month have not tracked.
