American Express has sent out a targeted AmEx offer for an additional 4x Membership Rewards points on U.S. Gas Stations for purchases made 6/30-9/30

The Fine Print

Valid until 9/30

Our Verdict

If you have this on the PRG you’d be earning a total of 6x points as that card earns 2x on these purchases already, other cards would earn a total of 5x MR. Other cards do earn 5% on gas purchases but this is more accessible and valuable (due to the membership rewards points aspect) than cash back.

Yes. I have 5 (PRG, Green personal, EDP, Mercedes Benz revolver and Biz Green). My guess the reason that many MR earning cards is to maximize earnings in specific categories and get sign up bonuses.

So on Everyday Pfd, would we expect 9x if we get in 30 txns? 2x standard + 4x bonus + 50% bonus??? The yearly 3x grocery up to $6k works that way – I get a total 4.5x. This is excellent if so!

I have this offer on my Platinum so I put the card back in my wallet. However for GAS purchases I’m not sure how much I will use it. It seems that using the Cit Costco Visa at Costco or Fred Meyer might be a better deal than this at a regular gas station. Too bad the terms exclude all byt gas stations.

When you buy gas at Fred Meyer, is it coded as fuel? Whenever I buy gas at Kroger, it codes as fuel only when I pay at the pump. I’m pretty sure that Kroger fuel rewards can be redeemed at Freddie’s and vice versa.

I use my EDP for gas at KrogerFuel and my PRG AU does as well. It always codes as ‘fuel’. Just wondering if this works because Kroger owns Fred Meyer fuel centers.

It does code as fuel for me at Freddie’s but the Terms and conditions are worded that Freddie’s wouldn’t count. I actually just bought gas tonight on my Amex so I’ll know shortly if I get an extra 4x soon.
