tried this offer again and got the email after 12hrs.
those of us that did it immediately after the offer rolled out probably hit a glitch.
i’d suggest doing it again.

Here’s an interesting DP: I contacted Amex via chat today and asked them whether they could tell me how much in eligible purchases I’ve made toward meeting the offer. Turns out Amex is easily able to do that. The chat agent gave me two numbers: a “spend to next award” number (the spend amount needed to get the next $10 credit) and a “spend to full award” number (the spend amount needed to earn the full $30 in credits — my offer is limit 3x $10 credits).

I’ve made three supermarket purchases so far. The first two purchases (both organic spend on groceries alone, one on May 15 and another on May 29) did NOT count toward the $100 spend. However, another supermarket purchase (in which I made a gift card purchase + organic spend on groceries, on May 31) DID count… including the amount of the gift card purchase. All three purchases were made at different stores.

I asked the Amex chat agent why the first two purchases did not count toward the offer, and the agent replied that those transactions SHOULD have counted since they are both coded as grocery purchases. The agent opened up an escalation case to the Amex Offers team, and I’m apparently supposed to have an answer within 5 business days.

There’s clearly something wonky going on with Amex’s IT system, and I’m wondering whether purchases early in the promotion period are especially subject to errors.

I’ve also chatted and found an interesting pattern: most of my Whole Foods charges did not count. Interestingly, the ones I used a mobile wallet (Android) did count and the ones where I used the card’s tap to pay feature did not count (same Whole Foods store). Based on the offer terms I would understand it should be the other way around…

Two chat agents and no one is willing to investigate or escalate, citing merchant code / superstore / wholesale club as not eligible for the offer (despite Whole Foods clearly listed as supermarket on their website https://www.americanexpress.com/us/rewards-info/retail.html ) Got the phone number for the Amex offer team 800-528-4800 (24/7) but not sure I’m willing to spend more time on this now.

Ian did you end up getting the offer credits after the escalation?

sg77 Yes, I did! And it looks like Amex is now accounting for all grocery purchases without having to escalate a case anymore. After hitting my first $100 threshold, I was credited $10 just a couple of days later.

Ian how many days after the escalation did the credit post? It’s been over 5 business days for me (though in another thread I saw someone was told 15-20 business days).

sg77 So, the case I escalated had to do with the fact that I had grocery purchases that did not count toward the cumulative spend toward the Amex Offer. However, when I initiated the case escalation, I had not yet hit this $100 threshold. Amex responded to my case escalation within a week, but I did not hit the $100 threshold until a few weeks later when I made a purchase on July 5. I received an email from Amex right after the purchase saying I had redeemed the Amex Offer and was credited the $10 on July 8. Hope this helps.

Has anyone actually gotten their $10 credit for this? I had this offer my platinum card. I’ve used it twice for purchases over $100 and still have not gotten the credit. I called and chatted with them. Once they tried to tell me that the grocery store I shop at was a superstore (not true). The second time they told me it would take 90 days. I find that very unusual because usually credits appear within the week that you use them.

No credit for me either. I’ve spent several hundred at my local Publix. Amex chat claims they see no qualifying activity. If Publix isn’t considered a supermarket, I dont know what is

Does each purchase need to be at least $100+? or can I do multiple purchases that add up to $100+?

I chatted with Amex rep today and they stated each purchase has to be more than $100

My Offer says one or more purchases so I believe that multiple transactions could be used. I made purchases at Walmart grocery and Trader Joe’s but no credit yet

Interesting, I chatted with an Amex rep today, and they told me the exact opposite. I quote exactly: “You can do on single or even with multiple charges to total $100.00.”

It says gift cards excluded. Does anyone know if it’s enforced?

Amex get L3 data from most merchants which is actually info on what you are buying – bananas and gift card will show up as such in their system even if its an order with both in them. Not sure if they will enforce on this one through.

Why awkward? You can always use contactless payment if you want to hide the card
