I just got my last $5 from a Walmart Neighborhood Market purchase I did back in May. I never brought it up with them since I figured they would’ve told me it wouldn’t count.

Just finished up my six purchases, all at the same grocery store. I’ve received one email, and one $5 credit so far.

6/19 Purchase
6/17 $5 credit
6/15 Purchase (got an email right after this one)
5/18 Purchase
5/15 Purchase
5/9 Purchase
5/8 Purchase

“Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 8/5/2022”

I guess technically I have to wait *check notes* forever to see how it shakes out.

I did 3 purchases at grocery stores last month totaling over $50(last purchase on 5/15), no email ever. I am about to forget about this, then the $5 credit just showed up on 6/21.

I did a similar number of $50 purchases at a local grocery store. At first there was no email nor statement credit but then on the 4th purchase they started sending emails and eventually they gave me the $5 for each of the first 3 purchases too. So, in the end, I got a total of $30 back, as advertised, despite it initially appearing that it wasn’t working

Something is off with this offer. Amex Offers has been reliably near to automatic. I made two separate purchases in May at ALDI for $50+

Neither led to a $5 credit.

Amex CS said – ALDI does not count as it is a supermarket/grocery stores etc… and therefore does not meet the terms… and then linked directly to their website where it says that ALDI is a SUPERMARKET… So I got escalated and I might manually get my $5 + $5 credits.. but this offer is broken and I am really disappointed in Amex trying to pull this shady stuff.

Just to follow up: Directly from your AMEX description what counts as Supermarkets…

U.S. Supermarkets

To earn additional rewards on supermarket purchases, the supermarket must be located in the U.S.

A supermarket offers a wide variety of food and household products such as meat, fresh produce, dairy, canned and packaged goods, household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies.

(Superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, and meal-kit delivery services are NOT considered supermarkets.)

Examples of merchants* that accept the Card and where you can earn additional rewards include:
ALDI
FreshDirect
Gelson’s
Hy-Vee
Kings Food Markets
Meijer
ShopRite
Smart & Final
Stop & Shop
Trader Joe’s
Vons
Whole Foods
Winn-Dixie

This is word for word from your own website:
https://www.americanexpress.com/us/rewards-info/retail.html

So when your Amex offers says: Details
Get a $5 statement credit by using your enrolled eligible Card to spend a minimum of $50 in one or more purchases in-store or online at a U.S. supermarket by 8/5/2022. Limit of 6 statement credits (total of $30). See terms.

Why would I not believe your website that ALDI counts…

Got the same BS from the CS, was offered a $5 goodwill for being a good customer, LOL! Not going to use the remaining offer (4x $5). Too much work

update: Amex manually credited +$5 and +$5 for my two eligible purchases. Not sure that I will attempt using this again – wary of Amex – hopefully just a one off issue and not a new anti-customer trend with their amex offers….

DP2: The IT problem may just, possibly, have been fixed. P2, who was unaware of the fact that this offer was not triggering correctly, went grocery shopping and spent a combined $50+ at a local Mexican supermarket + Trader Joe’s. Congratulations e-mail received from Amex 48 hours later. We’ll take it.

Update: Offer seems to be working fine now for mid-June purchases. Two $5 credits have posted automatically, one from the transaction above and another from grocery purchases made by P2 a few days later. Congratulations e-mails received for both as well. Celia

a quick question: if I spend $100 in 1 single transaction, do I get $5 back or $10 back? TIA.

In addition to getting the $5 credit I mentioned in my last comment below, I’m finally getting emails when I use the offer. I used yesterday for the second time because I got my credit for the first purchase, and got the email today that I used the offer.

Thanks for using your American Express® Card ending in xxxxxx for the Amex Offer below:
Save at U.S. Supermarkets
Get $5 back when you spend $50 or more, up to 6 times (total of $30).

Thanks Ian and RM, I just chatted to have an escalation raised. I did not have to argue about the store being a Supermarket, because the purchase already got 3% Reward on an Amex Blue card.

Unfortunately, even after referring to Ian’s post, the agent did not seem to know about the “spend to full award” amount.

What I essentially typed:

Missing Amex Offers credit

I have the following Amex Offer:
Get $5 back when you spend $50 or more, up to 4 times (total of $20).
Save at U.S. Supermarkets

For my purchase on x/x, which is coded Supermarket, I already got 3% Reward because of it.

However, I still do not see any credit from this Amex Offer.

Could you please raise an escalation so I receive the proper credit?

After more back and forth clarification, the agent finally told me: “Sure, I will give you the escalation ID so you can follow it up after 3-5 business days.”

Andy K
Andy K

My escalation was closed on 6/15. Still no credit.

I was told “there were some issues with this offer because of the merchant codes, there’s a fulfillment delay”, and “‘you should be able to expect the offer award within 15-20 business days at the earliest, or within the offer terms at the latest'”.

A purchase on 5/12 still has not been “captured” for this offer.

sg77

Andy K did you end up getting the credit?

Andy K

Still no credit on the July statement that closed a few days ago.

I went on chat, and the agent issued the missing amount (“will appear within 24-48 hours”).

Cross-posting this from another DoC thread with a similar Amex Offer, as I think y’all might find this DP interesting:

I contacted Amex via chat today and asked them whether they could tell me how much in eligible purchases I’ve made toward meeting the offer. Turns out Amex is easily able to do that. The chat agent gave me two numbers: a “spend to next award” number (the spend amount needed to get the next $10 credit) and a “spend to full award” number (the spend amount needed to earn the full $30 in credits — my offer is limit 3x $10 credits).

I’ve made three supermarket purchases so far. The first two purchases (both organic spend on groceries alone, one on May 15 and another on May 29) did NOT count toward the $100 spend. However, another supermarket purchase (in which I made a gift card purchase + organic spend on groceries, on May 31) DID count… including the amount of the gift card purchase. All three purchases were made at different stores.

I asked the Amex chat agent why the first two purchases did not count toward the offer, and the agent replied that those transactions SHOULD have counted since they are both coded as grocery purchases. The agent opened up an escalation case to the Amex Offers team, and I’m apparently supposed to have an answer within 5 business days.

There’s clearly something wonky going on with Amex’s IT system, and I’m wondering whether purchases early in the promotion period are especially subject to errors.

DP: Bought groceries at Trader Joe’s (no gcs, purely organic spend). Split payment — $50 on Amex, balance onto another card. No $5 credit after 11 days. Chatted with Amex, which took the position that the charge was not eligible because Trader Joe’s is not a “supermarket.” When I pointed out that Trader Joe’s is listed as an eligible supermarket by Amex itself (https://www.americanexpress.com/us/rewards-info/retail.html), CSR agreed to escalate the issue to the rewards team. An astonishing 35 minutes wasted in chat trying to address a $5 issue — with no resolution beyond “check back in a week.” Took one for the team to get a DP for the folks here, but am unlikely to try to use this offer again. Clearly there is an IT issue here that they have not fixed. Celia Andy K JoeF TD

RM Agreed that it’s an IT issue. I had used the offer for $150 in total groceries on my card and a straight $50+ on P2’s card, all in the first week of the offer. All organic spend at various grocery stores (all have given me the 3% for groceries). I stopped as well when it was clear that the credit wasn’t happening for most. Hopefully they’ll eventually show but if not, I’ll follow up with Amex at the “90 days from offer end.” Thanks for the DP.

TD

The tell will be whether Amex actually fixes the IT issue now that it has been exposed, and gives credits where they are due, or just lets everyone twist in the wind and fixes it only for people who do battle with CSRs. That’s where they really show who they are, if they try to maintain ignorance to perpetuate the fraud.

MESSAGE TO AMEX MANAGEMENT:
1. TRUST DESTROYED >>>> $5 CREDIT AT THIS POINT
2. COST OF GETTING IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME <<<< COST OF WHATEVER CORNERS YOU ARE CUTTING

They see the game as: The cardholder's only right is to arbitrate, or, if they opt out, to litigate. Class arbitration is waived and not enough people opt out to merit class action litigation. So then the next step is scam away using IT to maintain deniability. The only cardholders who dodge the scam are those who bulldoze the CSRs and get credits manually. Cardholder's remedy is to walk, in some form (stop using Amex offers, diminish card use, stop using card entirely, go with competitor), if that's how Amex wants to roll. The opportunity for Amex to improve is to (A) fix this current situation with Amex Offers and (B) ensure it doesn't happen again. But allowing this to become normal and letting them make excuses…ain't nobody got time for that.
