This deal has expired, you can view more Citi deals here.

The Offer

Targeted offer, sent out via e-mail. Unsure on the subject line

  • Redeem Thank You points for any gift card at a 20% discount

The Fine Print

  • Offer valid through 5/10/18

Our Verdict

They had the same offer last year as well. Normally gift card redemptions get you one cent per point in value, with this offer you get 1.25 cent per point in value. Popular options include: Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, Kohl’s. Keep in mind there is sadly no eBay on Amazon.

I know this deal is dead, but one thing I discovered today is that using points from my Premier card is 1 cpp for gift cards, but using points earned for my banking relationship is around .7 cpp for gift cards (3,500 for $25 gift card). Did not realize these were treated differently. Any thoughts on how to best use points from banking relationship?

What is the mortgage trick?

They will cut a check to your mortgage company using points at a 1:1 value. The problem I fear is they will just credit my principal (which isn’t a bad thing) but won’t count as a monthly payment.

You can have them simply make the check out to your bank and cash it. I did this for the student loan option.

I requested a check payable to PNC (who I actually did have a student loan through but was my primary bank at the time) and deposited into my checking.

I can call mine and tell them to apply it towards the payment.

I thought about the mortgage trick but just use this card to pay my phone bill and directv bill and they are refunded fully because they are “utilities”.

At 1:1?

Yes on the pay with points most of them aren’t a good deal. (I think it is a 3/4 ratio) But for some reason utilities code as 1:1. Still not airlines 5:4 ratio but since I don’t travel much and use UR/MR when I do I use this redemption for statement credit. Utilities are very broad though so AT&T phone and internet both code as a utility.

But phone bill can be paid with credit card, often at a high rewards rate (like 5x points with Ink), or at a minimum with a 2% or 1% card, so you’re still losing a little bit compared to getting cash for your thankyou points.

You could try paying for someone else’s airfare at 1.25 cpp and have them reimburse you.

Wonder if they’re targeting Premier / Prestige members who’d otherwise be able to use those points at 1.25 cpp or better.
