The Offer
No direct link to offer, sent out via e-mail. Subject line is unknown
- Discover is offering select cardholders 5% back on Restaurant purchases from January 1, 2023 – February 28, 2023 on up to $1.000 in purchases. Requires activation.
- Others got the same offer for the Digital Wallet category.
- Others got the same offer for the Gas Stations category.
Our Verdict
This is in addition to the Q1 categories (grocery, drugstores, streaming).
I feel like I got this offer, activated it, and they haven’t been giving me the reward, but I’m going to check now to see if I was offered it for restaurants or for Gas stations, I feel like I’m not eating any Cashback, even 1% for Restaurants?
Despite years of chasing these targeted offers with never any luck, I had an online chat with Discover just now, and wife got 0% APR on one of her Discover cards, and an extra 3% on everything for six months (so total of 8% on quarterly categories) on the other account. Still trying to figure out how to best game that. Too bad it wasn’t both on the same card! Or the digital wallet offer would have been sweet too.
And just chatted with another rep about *my* Discover card. Nada.
But we’ll use the heck out of DW’s accounts next year.
Subject line : Special offer: earn 5% cash back at Gas Stations
Earn up to $50 extra cash back by shopping at Gas Stations from Jan.—Feb.
William Charles Looks like there are a lot of different versions of the offer
Updated thanks
Digital Wallet is more useful than groceries these days because every store accepts ApplePay
I can never get my Samsung pay or Google pay to work at Walmart, at least with the self-checkout registers. Plus some Ralph’s locations by me in California have a little sign that says no Apple pay.
You can only use Walmart pay at Walmart.
Yep, I use to pull it off back when Samsung Pay could still utilize the MST tech on the majority of their flagships, at that time. Sammy has since done away with MST, and consistently devalues the program in general. Still, I use it wherever I can for the security, and a few other reasons. Even before MST “died”, the a$$bags at Walmart had figured a way to largely block it, even though it essentially imitated a swipe. Walmart will continue to get as little business from me as I can get away with, until they wise up and jump on the NFC band wagon. Trying to force customers to use your GARBAGE Walmart Pay, will only alienate most. I’ll be purchasing more GCs to max out this quarter’s 5% back in-store at WM, via my Chasse Freedom cards….and then use those GCs to shop at WM once the new year begins. If they weren’t essential for a certain percentage of my grocery shopping, I’d rarely set foot in the place.
Except Kroger and most stores in the Kroger family (Mariano’s, etc.) which refuse to join the 21st century and therefore disable Apple Pay/Google Wallet. Subtracting the general-merchandise stores (Costco, Walmart, Amazon), Kroger is the biggest grocery store in the country (and about to get bigger). So no, far from “every store” accepts ApplePay.
I could never understand why Kroger continues to resist Google/Apple Pay. Is Kroger Pay, launched in 2019, still around?
If the merger goes through, which I hope it doesn’t, will Albertson/Safeway affiliates stop accepting it?
Title: “Special offer: earn 5% cash back at Restaurants”
Received via email: “Earn up to $50 extra cash back by shopping with Digital Wallets from Jan.—Feb.” Extension of the existing 4th Q digital wallet cash back for 2 more months.
I have been with discover since 1981 when they were initially issued by sears. It was my first CC. At the time only sears accepted discover until they started expending after that period. I find it hard to believe that even with a stellar credit score discover has never send me any offers outside of the quarterly 5% savings calendar. As a result I have been using their card less and less starting last year.
yeah, these folks only care about NEW customers. Old reliable, loyal customers are damned. Just look at all the offers for cable/cell phone companies. Always $500.00 $300.00 rebates or gift cards for NEW customers only. Ive been with Comcast for 20 years and have to fight hard and waste time on the phone for a measly 20.00 1x discount!!! new customers get $500.00.
That’s why it pays to shop around, with credit cards and cell phone plans. They don’t show you any loyalty, so why should you.
I have, and gotten cash bonus offers as well. I have amex, and 2 visa cards as well. The pattern that I have observed is if you use a particular card less they then entice you with offers to motivate you to use that card again.
I’ve had a Discover card since 98 and while I don’t get all the offers, I do get them. Got this one via email, didn’t have to chat.
As for Comcast, those new customers will be in the same boat after the first year or two. Not defending them, I dumped cable years ago.
Wow! Got me beat by 7 years. I used to only use that card to scrape the frost on my windshield every once in a while in houston. No one sells scrapers here!!! 🤣. Keep trying to chat every so often. I get a lot of these offers. I use my card sometimes, but mostly other cards.
I received this same Jan/Feb offer for the Digital Wallets category.
