The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • TIAA Bank is offering a bonus of $250 when you open a new checking account and complete the following requirements:
    • Make qualifying direct deposits totaling at least $1,000 within 90 days of account opening

The Fine Print

  • This offer is only available to customers opening their first TIAA Bank Yield Pledge Checking Account by 11/29/2019, applied for online from this webpage or by calling the number referenced above. This offer is not available to previous or existing Yield Pledge Checking Account customers and it may not be combined with any other checking account offers from TIAA Bank. This offer is intended for addressees of mail and email correspondences only and is not transferable. Limit 1 reward per household whether the account is joint or single.
  • In order to receive the $250 cash bonus from TIAA Bank, you must (1) open a new Yield Pledge Checking Account by 11/29/2019 and then (2) initiate one or more qualifying direct deposits totaling at least $1,000 that are credited to your new Yield Pledge Checking Account within the first 90 days of the account being opened. Account opening deposit must be new money (funds transferred from another financial institution) and may be satisfied with a qualifying direct deposit. Qualifying direct deposits include electronic deposits into your account of your (1) pension, paycheck, and government benefits (including Social Security) by your employer or the government; and (2) other regular income, such as annuity payments. Transactions that do not constitute qualifying direct deposits for this offer include, but are not limited to, person-to person transfers, transfers between your TIAA Bank accounts or accounts you have at other banks or financial institutions (including investment and brokerage firms), wires, and checks deposited by any means. TIAA Bank expressly reserves the right to determine, in its sole and absolute discretion, whether any deposit constitutes a “qualifying direct deposit” for purposes of this offer.
  • If the qualifications described above are met, the $250 cash bonus will be directly deposited into your Yield Pledge Checking Account within 120 days of the account opening date, only so long as your account has remained open and is in good standing on the date the reward is paid. This offer expires on 11/29/2019. Keep this offer for your records.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Checking account has no monthly fees

Early Account Termination Fee

Account must be kept open for 120 days

Our Verdict

Previously the best checking bonus we’ve seen from TIAA was $150, so this is an extra $100 and the requirements are exactly the same. This bonus is definitely worth doing, requirements are relatively easy and it’s relatively rare to see nationwide bonuses this big from smaller financial institutions. We will add this to our best checking bonuses page.

Can someone refresh my memory the last time they saw a targeted offer that was publicly available? Very strange of TIAA to have their terms worded like that, but still allow someone to open an account online.

arthur

since it doesn’t have monthly fees, would it be worth it to give it a try even if I’m not targeted?

I created an account before the post was updated to clarify that this is targeted. Planning to meet the qualifications and then leave a small amount deposited up to and beyond the supposed 120-day deposit threshold just to see if the bonus comes through (since there is effectively no risk to doing so).

Is there a place to put a promo code?

Illa J

Not that I saw.

Mali & Illa J – I suppose TIAA could use the list of targeted individuals (email addresses and/or physical mail) to filter out those who complete the requirements, but were not targeted. Do you think that is likely?

Mali
Mali

No I don’t think it’s likely. Since there is no monthly fee, if you can easily meet the DD requirement (as is mentioned in some comments TIAA is strict about real DD), I would say it’s worth trying.

Are TIAA bonuses always once-per-lifetime?
The November 2018 offer read like once-a-life-time: “This offer is not available to previous or existing TIAA Bank checking account customers.”(https://www.doctorofcredit.com/tiaa-bank-150-checking-200-money-market-bonus/#The_Fine_Print

You are right that without monthly fee, the out-of-pocket risk is mitigated, but if TIAA rejects a bonus payout, it is possible to miss out on all future TIAA bonuses if they are generally once-in-a-lifetime.

Have you had success churning TIAA?

Mali
Mali

There’s risk but I do think it’s not easy to verify by email address or by physical address??? if there is no unique code.

That’s my plan since no monthly fee.

Terms state 1 reward per household

Isn’t TIAA a stickler for real DD? None of my ACH qualified last time, and I did not get the bonus. They eventually shut my account down for too many MO deposits.

LC

yes big stickler. no luck between about 10 different sources last time… need real DD

This is why I keep a business checking account, so I can do real DDs to myself. Recommend you set one up. Costs me $1 per DD.

Which one do you use? I thought payroll services are pricey, how do you do it for just $1

What bank is your business chkg account with?

Ethan which one do you use? I currently have Chase and SunTrust business account and don’t see a $1 fee for them.

Good idea. Could use a Wiki-type primer on setting up payroll though, because it looks kinda painful: https://ht.businessonlinepayroll.com/spf/Enrollment/ProductCreate.aspx

But this wont work for a “business.” Chase Biz is much easier, but costs $25/mo, but does work.

To be clear: I mean Chase works for other banks, dont know about TIAA.

I used my business account and still was denied

But did you do a recurring DD from your biz acct, or just a regular ACH?

HR department is going to get tired of me. Just when I say am done for this year another good bonus pop-up.

Were you targetted? This is so tempting even though I’m not targetted, I want to try.

Duke I.
Duke I.

No, not targeted. I’ll have my employer to DD $1000 one time then remove the account. Nothing to lose.

Champ

LOL. My payroll department is the same. Even though I can change my DD online, apparently they have to do manual work to make the changes effective. They’re going to not like me again.

Kay Lowe
Kay Lowe

LOL, I’m lucky. Both my retirement program and social security allow online management of DD, so I can change it myself. Only problem is that SS is a couple of months out. If I submit a change now, it won’t go into effect until my Jan. payment.

SpicyPadThai

Just spoke to one of their reps and you ‘need’ to be targetted in order for this offer and this offer is mainly targetted to people who have a retirement account with them. I guess I won’t even try.

I don’t think this is the case.

I have a small outstanding annuity with them, but so far I only get solicited for Yield Money Market.

The MM option has got a specific dedicated offer code displayed on its splash page, in bold; the checking offer does not cite any offer code that I could see, FWIW.

TIAA is not a small bank…….there are very BIG by assets

Charles Mann

Lousy bank that won’t accept most ACH transfers as direct deposits and won’t answer questions regarding their qualifications. Avoid them.

Dayn_Perrys_Vape
Dayn_Perrys_Vape

Person to person ACH transfers *aren’t* direct deposits per the terms outlined by basically every bank. The fact that they often work is a loophole. Their actually enforcing that doesn’t make them a lousy bank. If you use a legitimate direct deposit per their terms and they don’t count that, that would be grounds to complain.

It’s honestly pretty crazy that most banks don’t bother to enforce this, online transfers between accounts code as WEB, payroll deposits code as PPD.

I have a retirement account through TIAA, so I might go for this one and do a legitimate DD. I haven’t received the offer through email yet, so does that mean I’m not targeted? I was targeted for the $500 Savings bonus over the summer, but deposit requirements were too high for me. I might wait until I receive the email and if I don’t just apply on the 29th anyway and hope for the best.

I was not targeted so I sent a DM through my retirement account and they said I was eligible. Told me to call the main number and ask for an agent. The CSR gave me an ID number to refer to (not sure if it one time use or not). I will call tomorrow & open the account and update.

skinnyelvis

Spoke with CSR:
1) Said that I needed to open the account first online b/c it was meant to go through the website that was linked to the offer email, They said they could put it through since I already had a TIAA account,
2) I opened the account online on the regular website. I am waiting for test deposits to be verified and then it would be funded.
3) They said they would email the marketing team and then the marketing team would add the code to my account. Then I would get the bonus if I met the terms.
