$50 Credit Card Bonus

If you do all the criteria to get the checking bonus offer, you’ll then be eligible for an additional $50 bonus when getting approved for a U.S. Bank credit card.

  • Apply for a U.S. Bank consumer credit card by August 12, 2016 September 9th, 2016
  • Make two purchases of $25 or more within 60 days of account opening

You’ll get $50 as a statement credit. This is in addition to any points you get as the ordinary signup bonus on the card.

You don’t open the credit card together with the checking account. Just open the checking, then before August 12 open any personal/consumer credit card using a regular online application (no special link needed), and you’ll be eligible for the $50 bonus.

Qualifying U.S. Bank Consumer Credit Cards: Cash+ Visa Signature, Cash+ Visa Platinum, Cash 365 American Express, FlexPerks Select+ American Express, FlexPerks Select Rewards Visa, Visa Platinum, FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature & FlexPerks Gold American Express.

Update

A reader points out that the terms indicate that the $50 bonus can not be combined with any other credit card offers. It might be that they are included standard signup bonuses. If true, you’ll end up getting the signup bonus but not the extra $50.

The Fine Print

Checking Bonus

  • Bonus will be deposited into your new Checking Account within 60 days of Direct Deposit or Bill Pay verification
  • Bonus will be reported as interest earned on IRS form 1099-INT
  • Offer is not valid if you have an existing U.S. Bank consumer checking account, had a U.S. Bank consumer checking account in the last six months, or received other U.S. Bank bonus offers in 2016

Credit Card Offer

  • Cards that do not qualify: College Visa, Secured Visa and any other credit card not listed above
  • One credit card offer per person, per household is permitted
  • Cannot be combined with any other credit card offers except the “Easy as 1,2,3” bonus offer, which is only available at any U.S. Bank branch
  • Allow 6–8 weeks after you have met the promotional criteria for your statement credit to appear on your new U.S. Bank credit card account statement
  • Offers are available to all legal residents of the United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 years or older
  • Subject to credit approval

Avoiding Fees

U.S bank has three checking products which qualify for this promotion:

  • Silver Checking Account
  • Gold Checking Account
  • Platinum Checking account

Probably the easiest way to keep this fee free is to open the Gold Checking account; if you have a U.S Bank credit card then the monthly fees on this account are waived.

If you don’t have a U.S Bank credit card and aren’t planning on getting one, your best bet is to open the Silver checking account which has of $8.95 ($6.95 if you enroll in paperless statements).

Fee is waived if you do these three things:

  1. Go paperless
  2. Open a Package Money Market Savings account
  3. Do one of these two things:
    • Have combined direct deposits totaling $1,000 or more, OR
    • Maintain an average monthly balance of $1,500

Early Termination Fee

U.S Bank used to charge an early account termination fee, but they no longer charge this fee.

Our Verdict

U.S. Bank comes out with an annual summer banking promotion. In the past, these have been $125 or $150. This time, they’re offering $150 with the added $50 credit card bonus.

All-in-all, it’s a solid bonus: no hard pull, $500 in credit card funding, and it’s a $200 bonus total with the credit card.

Of course, applying for the credit card will result in a hard pull. See 20 Things Everybody Should Know About US Bank Credit Cards before applying.

We’ll add this bonus to our best bank bonuses list and also our complete listing of checking bonuses.

Can 2 people, in the same Household, both get the USBank account… or just 1 per household.

William Charles

Two people can get it, one per household is just for the $50 bonus on credit cards.

RE:”This credit card offer is only available to customers having qualified for the Checking Package Offer. ”
Do I have to get approved for the Checking Package Offer and then apply for a cc?
Would I get both bonuses if I applied for a cc 1st &waited & used it to apply for the checking account?

Also, 2 people, in the same Household, both get the USBank account can get the $150 checking bonus but only1 /hh cc $50 bonus?

USbank rep (robin on 7-14-16) said there was not a 1/household limt on the $50 cc bonus (nor on the $150 checking bonus). Where did u get the 1 1/household limt on the $50 cc bonus ?

I dont see any entries for US bank in your article “List Of Methods Banks Count As Direct Deposits”.
Any updates on that ? Do they need real deposits?

Ken
Ken

Just do two Bill Pays to the credit card you used to fund the account and that fulfills the requirements.

It shows that Amex Platinum was a cash advance in the link your provided. How can that be as I was told a Charge card can’t have a cash advance? Does US Bank still take Amex for funding?

jnrfalcon
jnrfalcon

That means the transaction was declined. Not that the CA was processed…

Eric
Eric

Okay that makes more sense. Do you know if US Bank allows you to try credit card funding a second time if it gets declined?

BTW, the comments still aren’t working properly. I only saw this reply because I manually went back to the page.

jnrfalcon
jnrfalcon

I think you can do it over the phone. But that was because I did not finish the funding process last time…? Anyway that was a bit of mess last time…

Anyone know how to check when previous US Bank checking accounts were closed?

FB

You could try their support dept for that answer.
No record keeping at home for you Jacob?
I use Quicken, and see all of that info..

I had a Student Checking with them and it was closed due to inactivity I guess around 3 month ago. So that means I’m not eligible right?

Ken
Ken

It’s less than 6 months, so according to the terms you are not eligible.

What is the best information on Citi credit cards for account funding right now? Still getting hit with cash advance fees?

If not Citi, how about Wells Fargo Propel, or American Express?

I think I’m in a bank account funding dead zone right now for my min spend cards based on the most current research I can find. ><

William Charles

Depends on the bank, this page has the data points you want: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/does-funding-a-bank-account-with-a-credit-card-count-as-a-purchase-or-cash-advance/#US_Bank (a link is included to this at the top of every bank account bonus page next to credit card funding for future reference).

I think I got screwed. I opened account with promo code. Got to the funding page, entered my CC info, hit submit and got an error “Page expired after 15minutes” I am sure I did not take 15 minutes to fill out first 3 pages. Anyway, I thought I will start over, again got the error after entering my CC information. After about 30 minutes I received two emails with two account #. I called CS and talked to a lady, she said she can cancel one of the account for me. I am not sure which one she cancelled. I asked if I am still able to receive my $150 bonus and she said she don’t have that information and can’t tell me if i’ll get the bonus or not.

I vouch for this. Totally absurd. I didn’t even take 5 mins to go to funding page and as soon as I enter Submit, it expired the page saying more than 15 minutes.

Hi,Chuck. Any good signup bonus for U.S. Bank credit cards at this moment?
Thank you.

I heard US bank is really strict on approving credit cards. So should I apply for silver checking at first in case I don’t get approved for the credit card I can avoid the monthly fee by maintaining a minimum balance, but if I do get approved can I upgrade my silver checking into gold checking?

Karim
Karim

from my experience at least, that is not true. I was approved for 3 personal credit cards in the same day with only one inquiry. 2 of them were instantly approved and one went to pending but saw it in my account the next day.

FB
FB

Just opened online. Tried to use CC funding:
Discover, BoA CR, and Chase Freedom: declined.
After those three, they no longer gave a CC option.
Had to link another bank to pull funds across.
Oh well…

Can you get the $50 cc offer and the new acct spend bonus on the gold flex or does the $50 cancel that out?

zjts
zjts

Any updates on getting $50 bonus for cc in addition to a “regular” bonus such as 100 for 500 in purchases in 1st 90 days)

One other way to avoid fees on US Bank checking accounts: If you are a US Armed Forces servicemember or retired US Armed Forces servicemember, US Bank will waive the checking fee. If you qualify, I recommend keeping a minimum balance of at least the amount of the monthly fee, as US Bank first charges the monthly fee to the checking account, and then credits the checking account with the amount of the monthly fee.

Jeff S.
Jeff S.

Sweet deal! Nice catch Vince & thanks for the heads up on the balance. Actually, it’s not just free for active & retired military. The military banking page says “current & former servicemembers”, so I would guess anyone with a DD-214 would qualify for free checking. For those non-military that are just looking for a freebie, a warning states US Bank reserves the right to request verification.

Now I am scrambling through the fine print to ensure I can qualify for the bonus if I do military banking option. I would think it wouldn’t matter, but these promotions are all about the rules.

Their bonuses posted super fast last summer. I got mine six days after meeting the requirements.

was anyone able to fund the account online without the page getting expired?

Does it take AMEX for credit card funding?

William Charles

It does, but in the past there are reports of cash advance fees.
