Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Premium checking account (required for the $150 bonus) has a $5 monthly fee. This is waived if you have a daily balance of $1,000 or more.

Early Account Termination Fee

Account must remain open through 9/30/19, otherwise it looks like the bonus will be forfeit.

Our Verdict

Seems like an amazing offer, especially if you can do it twice per account for a total bonus of $300. It’s not clear if you’ll be able to open via phone/online or if you eventually need to go in branch. Definitely worth doing if it’s a soft pull, if anybody goes for this bonus then please share your experiences in the comments below.

Big thanks to reader, Curmudgeon who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

Some are in WNY actually and that makes us eligible. Believe it or not life goes on outside of NYC.

DoC William Charles, just got off the phone and to be eligible you must live, work, or worship inside the city of Buffalo or the towns of Townawanda and Amherst. All those are WNY places surrounding Buffalo. I was excluded and did not want to push my luck and lie saying I worshipped in one of those places. I was just a tad outside of the target area. May be worth adding a note as it’s much more exclusive than previously thought. I will be working in Buffalo soon and after that job is confirmed I will call back and try to apply with that eligibility requirement met

I requested contact by email and they included an application that has the following requirements on it, also only need to send in a notarized copy if you don’t want to go into branch.

Just have to comment…wow..upstate NY. Lucky to be working there? Buffalo? hardly. Just an aside.. Cuomo went to the White House to talk to the Pres today about the 10k tax cap. Maybe NYS should lower taxes. Not even thinking about it. NYState lost 123K families to low tax states in the past 3 years. Wonder why. I live in Putnam Dutchess area and am retiring in 5 months +moving to Tenn asap!! Ever been to Monticello NY?? depressing indeed. Cuomo puts a casino there to make everything good. Lost 80 mill in the last 2 quarters. get out of NYState now!!! And I lived in this State my entire life. What a ripoff. Oh..the families that leave are replaced by poor/sick/immigrants who they bring in and pay everything for…no contribution to the tax base at all. No wonder taxes are sky high..and look at the public schools. Not like when I went to them. English speakers are in the minority in the state..and wife taught in NYC schools for 22 years. Today you need a weapon upon entering. Oh yeah.. the new libs in Congress want a 70 % tax on the rich. Lets do it and see what happens…Sorry for venting

btw..Buffalo is 2nd snowiest city in the sate… Forgot Syracuse is #1. Where I am today it 6″ of snow and another coating of ice on top.. Cant even do biz here in this state.

Hardly the spot for political ranting. Not trying to argue with your individual details, but I will agree the taxes are insane and NYC runs NYS unfortunately. The 70% is a marginal tax rate, which means the 70% would not effect the majority of their income. Only part of their income would be taxed at 70%. Buffalo is doing great and turning around no thanks to Cuomo.

It’s nice to have a NY bank bonus where there’s a branch outside of NYC, so if there is an issue, I can actually show up and discuss in person. Dan, welcome to Buffalo!

I’ve always lived outside of Buffalo just thinking of taking a job in the city. But thanks RG

I don’t know if this has been asked before but, will a P.O. box work for this? I have boxed in NY… but I live in another state. Will it not work?

Does anyone know if they are doing a soft-pull credit report check?

Very cool. It’s not often there’s a region-specific bonus that applies to me. And the timing is perfect, I have an M&T account that just turned 180 days. So I can transfer the money parked there to keep this fee-free.

Thanks Doc!! I’ll let you know how it goes.

Opened an account 2 hours ago in branch, I don’t see a hard pull from it. A friend applied a few years ago and it wasn’t a hard inquiry then.

First three months are maintenance fee free, after that there’s a few ways to keep it free: $2500 daily balance, 10 debit POS transactions, any amount direct deposit. See page 4 of the fee schedule here https://www.summitfcu.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/ratefeeschedule.pdf

Did a real bad job of paying attention to my account, so didn’t notice when bonuses hit.
Bonus one hit after P1+P2 transactions=20 (in our case 13+7). Bonus two hit after P1+P2 transactions=40. Not 20 on P1, and then 20 on P2.

Additionally, a couple of our first twenty transactions did not code as debit (no PIN, shows up as “withdrawal” instead of “withdrawal XXXXXX”). So those do count. Makes me wonder if I could have just hit Amazon for 20x$1 instead of self checkout with one lime multiple times.

All in all, was more work than it could have been. Hopefully others will profit from my mistakes.
