Our Verdict
The $100 signup bonus + $25 redemption bonus have been around for a long time, and the .5% bonus has been around since July. These deals used to be mutually exclusive until sometime in the past couple of days; they are now offering the cash bonuses and the earnings bonus together.
If you max out the $2k quarterly categories, you’ll be getting an extra $10/quarter during the first year due to the .5% bonus (aside from the standard 5% earn). You can max this out at five quarters, being that we’re in the middle of a quarter now, for a total $50 added from the extra .5%. Overall, the total signup bonus would be $100 + $25 + $50 = $175. Some people might also get some value from the 2.5% selected category, and this one is unlimited earn.
Not sure it’s worth signing up for the signup bonus alone, but a lot of people find the card worth getting due to the rotating 5% categories which can get you $400/yr if you max out the 5% categories. These bonus offers certainly make it more enticing. Check out these Things to Know about US Bank Credit Cards before applying.
Hat tip to @telewatcr
I took a look at the current 5% categories and there’s nothing very enticing. Here’s a link: https://cashplus.usbank.com/merchants/index
oh wow. Yes, those 5% categories would definitely not work for me.
Apparently if you select the bookstore category, it counts Amazon kindle as a merchant in that and then all Amazon gc purchases get coded as 5% cashback through it.
All Amazon counts as 5% under bookstores. I’ve been using it like this for years
well, for a fee-free card, its not bad for those whose spending habits include the 5% categories…cell phones, gyms, department stores, fast food, and electronic stores can consume a noticeable amount of spending at times.
Oh darn. If only one of those 5% was groceries.
I’ll add the link, thanks Gerald
So all the good bonus categories, the ones that Chase Freedom uses, are relegated to the 2% category on the US Bank card. I can get the same 2% with Citi Double Cash with a lot less hassle. The 5% categories are a bunch of odds and ends that won’t amount to much for most people.
it’s their CB will expire for a certain years? because my relative informed me his account just taken off a few dollars from it. I couldn’t find anything on their T&C
Yes, if you dig deep into the terms, the cash expires after 36 months.
Not sure if this applies to many readers here, but as someone who rarely maxes out categories, I think it’s worth noting the $20 minimum redemption.
Actually, the $20 redemption is for a Visa Gift Card. There is no min redemption on statement credits. I know as I have the card.
Thanks, I misread the website.
I received $100 bonus after spending $500 within 3 months,$25 bonus redeeming first $100 in a single redemption,$25 bonus after three time $25 Amazon gc purchase ,Earn a $10 statement credit just by making a $10 net purchase with Apple Pay ,$7.45 monthly by paying $149 phone bill.
Hi Eten. Does it has to be Amazon gift card or I can buy any type of gift cards on Amazon?
US bank new account friendly? I have 8 new ones in 9 months.
well, from the “things to know about us bank: “That being said, US Bank is quite difficult to get approved with…. Just keep in mind they are such sticklers when it comes to approval.”
8 new us bank accounts?
“Existing and previous Cash+ Card accounts do not qualify for this offer.” Jerks. So they made me ineligible for this bonus, even if I wanted to burn an HP, after force-converting my Cash+ VISA with $22k CL to the useless Cash 365 Amex without advance notice.
I already have this card (U.S. Bank Cash+) & earned the $100 bonus +$25 redemption bonus back in Oct 2015. The card is till open. I know I can open another U.S. Bank Cash+ card, but will I be able to qualify for this $100bonus on the new card after required spending $500 within 3 months ? Any experience & opnions are appreciated
anyone still MS on this card? i doubt it, but just wondering to see if any DPs.
I stop using this card after they took away the Bill Pay and Charity categories. Anyone knows a good card with no annual fee that I can convert to? Thanks.
Thanks for the info! Prefixing “Extra” to “.5% Cash Back” in the title would make it clearer.
Good point, I’ll do that.
According to the landing page, “5.5% cash back for the first year on your first $2,000 in combined eligible net purchases each quarter on two categories you choose. Thereafter, earn 5%.” So after 2k per quarter at 5.5%, it’s 5% uncapped? Error on US Bank’s side? Seems too good to be true.
5% is capped, always.
For those who think the categories are not good, I beg to differ. With the holidays coming, the electronic stores and department stores can be good. Best Buy sells gift cards as well as some department stores, plus regular holiday shopping.
Personally, I use the cell phone as I have ATT as my provider for UVerse and phone. Granted, I have to go to the store to make my payment at kiosk but the store is not far from my home. I also use the bookstore for Amazon purchases as a previous poster stated.
I like the card as I consider it in the Discover/Freedom group.
This card was awesome when they unlimited $25 bonus when you redeemed $100 from the rewards plus the bonus if you had a checking account. Now it’s only 1 per card and no bonus with a checking.
does the packet containing the card contain any info confirming the bonus offers (mine does not)
100 bonus after spending $500 within 3 months
Get $25 bonus when redeeming your first $100 in a single redemption
Get an extra .5% bonus on all earnings for your first cardmember year:
5.5% on select categories you can choose from, max $2k per quarter (instead of standard 5%)
2.5% on select categories you can choose from (instead of standard 2%)
1.5% everywhere else (instead of standard 1%)
Just got a targeted mailer. Does not include the extra .5% on categories but instead has a $200 bonus and 15 months 0% APR on purchases.
