Uber Discontinues 5% Uber Cash Discount Program

Uber had a running offer where you can prepay your Uber accounts in $100 increments and get a 5% discount; $25 and $50 prepayments got lower discounts. They’ve now removed the discount entirely. They still allow you to buy Uber Cash prepaying your account, but with no discount.

They sent out an email pushing users instead to their Uber credit card which offers 5% back in Uber Cash on Uber purchases:

As of Monday, March 9, you will no longer receive a promotional discount when topping up your Uber Cash balance. Not to worry, you can still use your Uber Cash across rides, Eats, and JUMP to plan ahead for future trips while managing your spend. Looking to continue earning extra Uber Cash? Check out the Uber Credit Card, which lets you earn 5% back in Uber Cash on all your Uber purchases.

I’m actually surprised it wasn’t worth it for them as they gain the float and they get your funds locked into Uber (versus Lyft), but apparently they decided it wasn’t worthwhile. Going forward, discounted Uber gift card deals will be more valuable making even smaller discount potentially worthwhile. It can still be useful to prepay your account if you are trying to use up some sort of travel credit, meet a spend requirement etc.

Update: Readers note that the 5% discount is still showing in UberEATS, so you can fund your Uber account that way. Unclear if they’ll be removing that too, but it’s working for now.

Actually… I’m not surprised. Their stock took a hit today because an Uber driver tested positive for Coronavirus. Company losses nearly always get passed on to the consumer. 1 John 4:7-8

Their stock took a hit because people aren’t riding in rideshares. Lyft isn’t immune to infected drivers.

My e-mail said 5% discount ends April 8th not March 9.

I wonder if this is to try to push people to the Uber Visa after seeing a huge drop in people using it after completely nerfing it. (For those that don’t have it: stay away!)

It looks like you can still load funds at the 5% discount through the Uber Eats app, and use the funds on Uber rides.

Keep in mind Uber may lock your account if you load gift cards

Now that I’m sock drawering this card, I was planning to do .50 Amazon reloads once a month, since Barclays will excuse the small charge. Am I running a risk of locking the account?

It has nothing to do with the credit card issued by Barclaycards
