In case you didn’t know American Express has released new bonuses on the SPG personal & business cards. They offer $100 after $1,000 in purchases within the first 3 months and another $100 statement credit after you make your first SPG/Marriott purchase. The offers are terrible when compared to sign up bonuses of 25,000-35,000 SPG points in the past. That being said, the new offers are interesting to some people: people who have already received the sign up bonus. Normally the SPG cards come with a $95 annual fee but this is waived first year in this offer.
If you’ve already gotten the sign up bonus on this card before then you won’t be eligible for it again anyway, but at least this way you don’t pay the annual fee in the first year. I don’t think signing up for the card in this instance makes sense for most people due to the fact that the card will stop earning 1x SPG points on all purchases from August 1st on wards but some people are interested in getting it as it will offer a free night certificate on card anniversary on any property that costs up to 35,000 Marriott points. Personally I don’t think holding the card and paying $95 for that makes sense, but it might be worth it for some especially when you add the 15 nights towards elite status (not stackable with other cards unfortunately).
This is obviously a very limited use case, but it still might be useful for some readers.
