Our Verdict
Previously Qantas has offered a transfer bonus of 15-30% that could be stacked with a 20% transfer bonus from American Express, so this 20% bonus isn’t as good as there is no similar offer to stack with. Also worth noting that Citi still offers a 25% transfer bonus until Feb 22. So if you happen to have both Amex MR and Citi TYP, go with the Citi.
Waiting for BA, qantas simply doesn’t show as many availability as BA does.
This is almost as useful as BA for AA flights. They are usually a bit more expensive, but the bonus evens that… I’m waiting for a BA bonus however.
The cancellation “penalty” is slightly different than BA. e.g. for a trip to Cancun from DFW where the taxes and fees are high, BA may charge I believe$50 while Qantas is 5000 points. Just an example.
Just like most transfer bonuses but especially for ones to partners like Qantas the have very limited sweet spots on their chart: if you have to ask if this is a good deal, it’s not and you shouldn’t consider transferring your points.
