[Expired][YMMV] Amex SPG: Register and Get a Bonus 1x Points at Supermarkets and Restaurants, up to 2,000 Points

Deal has expired, view more American Express deals by clicking here.

The Offer

Direct Link to offer

Some people have been getting an email or seeing in their login the following offer on their SPG Amex card:

  • You can earn one additional point for each dollar of eligible purchases on your Card at U.S. supermarkets and U.S. restaurants between the time you complete registration and November 30, 2018, up to a maximum of 2,000 bonus points.

The Fine Print

  • Registration period ends on October 31, 2018.
  • Bonus offer ends November 30, 2018.
  • Maximum of 2,000 additional points.
  • To earn 1 additional point for a restaurant purchase, the purchase must be at a restaurant located in the United States.
  • You will NOT earn 1 additional point for purchases made at a restaurant owned by a U.S. company but located outside the U.S. (e.g., Hard Rock Café in Paris).
  • You also will NOT earn 1 additional point for purchases at nightclubs or convenience stores.
  • You may not earn 1 additional point for purchases at a restaurant located within another establishment (e.g., a restaurant inside a hotel, casino, or event venue). For example, purchases made at a restaurant located within a hotel may be recognized as a purchase at a hotel, not a restaurant.
  • Purchases may fall outside of the Purchase Period (and therefore not be eligible for the extra points) in some cases, such as a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date you made the transaction. (For example, if you buy goods online, the purchase date may be the date the goods are shipped.)
  • Eligible purchases can be made by the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on a single Card Account.
  • Eligible purchases are purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits.
  • Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of traveler’s checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards; person-to-person payments or purchases of other cash equivalents. Additional Card Members on your account are not eligible to register for this offer.

Our Verdict

Extra point will get you 3 points per dollar instead of 2 with a 2,000 points max. Nothing great, but a little something for supermarkets and restaurants.

A few readers have sent this in over the past few weeks, and now we got a direct link from a reader. I assume this is targeted/YMMV. There’s also a targeted/YMMV spending offer for any spend on the SPG card.

Hat tip to readers F.M., M.M., and T.G.

Amex never seems to target me for these promos.

Lol, title should be: [YMMV] Amex SPG: Register and Get THE SAME NUMBER OF POINTS YOU WOULD HAVE ONE MONTH AGO at Supermarkets and Restaurants, up to 2,000 Points.

But thanks for posting Doc. (not being sarcastic, I appreciate your work)

When I max out my Amex Everyday Preferred (4.5x) and my Wells Fargo Visa Signature (5x) I’ll consider this. Which isn’t happening.

Absolutely right! Even with the “increased” bonus, the devals to the loyalty program itself makes me shy away from changing spending habits to earn these points. It’s just not worth it anymore…

Yup, exactly. If this was one extra old Starpoint (ie, double Starpoints), I’d be all for it. But to get one extra Marriott point? Just not worth it.

We can’t live in the past. This might be helpful for those who are MSing to Plat or trying to meet min spend on upgrade offers. Not going to turn my nose up to a free extra point.

interesting. i got an error message: “We’re sorry. Our systems are currently unavailable and we are unable to enroll your Card at this time. Please try again later.” vs. the usual that i’m not targeted for this offer.
