Buying Visa gift cards from Office Depot GCM counts as “online purchases”. Got my statement credit

William Charles I got an offer this morning for my SYW card as follows:

$50 Statement Credit on Eligible Purchases!
Activate this offer and make eligible purchases totaling $500 or more with your Shop Your Way Mastercard® from 3/18/2021 (or the date you activate, whichever is later) through 4/16/2021.1

The fine print: Only purchases made after activation will apply towards receiving your statement credit. The following types of transactions don’t qualify as purchases that earn statement credits: use of checks that access your Shop Your Way Mastercard account; balance transfers; cash advances; travelers checks, foreign currency purchases, money orders, wire transfers and similar cash-like transactions; lottery tickets, gaming chips and similar betting transactions; interest and account fees; unauthorized charges; and items returned for credit. The Shop Your Way Mastercard account must be current and open at the time we determine whether you qualify for the statement credit. Please allow 2 billing cycles after the end of the promotional period for the statement credit to be added to your account.

The more you use the card the better offers you will get. I recently did an offer of spend $2300 and get 12500 points, I completed that offer and i just got the 20% offer. If you have this card you need to burn it up to get better and better offers.

I disagree. The more I use the card, the higher the minimum spend requirement, and despite charging everything I possibly can, I don’t have the expenses to meet the minimum without manufactured spending. I have a stack of Visa gift cards sitting in front of me right now that I need to spend down as it is. Yes, it is easy to accumulate a bunch of points, but the redemption options are meh. No Amazon or Walmart gift cards. I’m not planning on traveling until the pandemic is over.

I have the same experience as storm. The more I did the deals, the higher the minimum spends got. At this point they want me to spend $2000 PER MONTH (down from $2500/mo since i didn’t even activate that offer) at restaurants to qualify. It started at $500 per month.

Yes when I skipped an offer that had a huge spend (in the past I had MS to reach these) the next one was for a smaller min spend.

I’m sure if I get this it will show up when half the month is over, always the way. Still, this is the best card there is.

For me it took a couple months, and I put minimal spend on it (like only $10-20/month). Then I randomly started getting emails every month or so with these crazy offers. Other people have gotten them pretty quick so I don’t really know what triggers it, if anything.

FWIW, my offer says this:

For total eligible online purchases of $100 or more made each month from 2/1/21 (or the date you activate this offer, whichever is later) through 4/30/21, you’ll earn 15% back in statement credits (up to a maximum total statement credit of $45 each month). Only purchases made after activation will apply toward receiving your statement credits.

Does anyone have information from prior offers like this what counts as “online purchases”? Would property tax payments, federal income tax payments count?

i doubt it but you can do a test payment. Generally I think they need to be some sort of store, taxes will code as government/utilities. Gift cards should work (GCM, Simon), but I need to test myself.

Sears definition of ‘online’ is totally different than anyone else’s, even normal Citibank, or ATT.

It is hard to truly reconcile with activity with what it will be, but in general I believe almost all ‘Card Not Present’ activity ends up being ‘online’.

There are a few exceptions (taxes are excluded):

Eligible online purchases are those made via a computer network but not all online transactions will be considered an eligible online purchase. Eligible online purchases do not include the following types of purchases in the following categories: subscription, membership or recurring purchases; utilities, cable/satellite and telephone; insurance; medical and healthcare providers; government services, taxes and tolls; education, including schools or other teaching institutions; contractor, professional, financial, legal, personal and business services; repair services, direct marketing; purchases that are manually keyed by a merchant; or online purchases made through mobile/wireless technology depending on how the technology is set up to process the purchase. Merchants must submit charges under the appropriate merchant code or industry code to be an eligible online purchase. We do not determine whether merchants appropriately identify all transactions made on a credit card, however we reserve the right to determine which purchases qualify for this offer.

That’s a lot of exclusions

it sounds like mainly online retail. You can’t pay any normal bills to have it count (health insurance, utilities, cable, wireless, etc.)

I guess you can buy GC from a place like Office Depot and use it to pay those bills.

They write all that, but Citi haven’t really coded up their back end to actually exclude all that. In general: Sears ‘online’ defn is very generous and is totally worth putting things on it (that might be excluded) if you don’t have a way to hit the spend naturally (like Amazon reloads).
