Our Verdict

Standard bonus on this card is 40,000 points, but has gone as high as 70,000 points in the past so this is only an increase of 5,000 points. Make sure you know how much value you can get from Hilton points before applying and also reading our ‘20 Things Everybody Should Know About American Express‘. Also be aware there is a 100,000 point bonus on the American Express Surpass card at the moment.

If you’ve signed up for a lower bonus in the recent past, try and call to get matched. Follow these instructions:

  • Don’t message, online representatives do not have the ability to award courtesy points.
  • Call and say you’re disappointed that a new higher bonus became available so recently after you applied.
  • If you don’t get the full match then escalate. Ask politely to be escalated to a manager and repeat your disappointment in American Express due to the bonus change.
  • If they say they’ll put in a request to get the bonus points, decline and hang up and call again. The requests are basically a blackhole and never get honored and removed your ability to try again.

I applied for this card just under a month after applying for the Surpass.
I was approved.
Weird things is that no inquiries showed up on any bureaus.
Is that a fluke, or is there any data on such a thing?

I called to get matched (opened my account <1 month ago) and spoke to a account manager/supervisor but was still declined the match; I let them know that it wasn't appreciated and that I'll definitely think twice in the future about before opening accounts with AX. Hope that others have more luck.

I called twice and best I could get was a 3,000 point consolation prize. I’m sure they could do more, but it can be hard with these Amex reps sometimes.

Can these points be converted into cash or gift cards?

If you get this free card, can you get the Surpass card later and get both bonuses?

I have the Surpass card, but my husband doesn’t have a Hilton AX card. He has an AU card though from my Hilton Surpass card.

The other thing is if you have AX Platinum, you get Hilton gold for free.

should be, as each is a different card. seems that the $0 af is a better offer than the surpass’ that comes with the af & $3k min spend

So, I was thinking, why not apply for both at the same time? Also, do these have the amex offers?
