Update: This article is from 2016 and is no longer valid.
We broke the news that it looks like Chase has applied the 5/24 rule on more of their credit cards. Thankfully Chase still has some cards you can apply and be approved for if you’ve opened more than five new cards in the last 24 months. Those cards are:
- Chase IHG
- Chase Hyatt
- Chase British Airways
- Chase Disney
- Chase Fairmont
- Chase Amazon
- Chase AARP
I have no idea if these cards will have the 5/24 rule applied to them in the future or not (I will try to find out though). Because of this, I assume some people will want to apply for these cards sooner rather than later so let’s look at the best offer for each card.
- Chase IHG: 70,000 points after $2,000 in spend + 5,000 for adding an authorized user
- Chase Hyatt: 2 free nights at any Hyatt property worldwide after $1,000 in spend and 5,000 Hyatt points for adding an authorized user and them making their first purchase.
- Sometimes possible to get the same offer but with a $50 statement credit when making a dummy booking on the Hyatt website.
- Chase British Airways: 50,000 Avios after $2,000 in spend, an extra 25,000 after $15,000 in spend. Annual fee of $95 is not waived.
- Chase Disney: Premier card is $200 after $500 in spend and $49 AF, no annual fee card is $50 after first purchase.
- Chase Fairmont: 2 free nights after $3,000 in spend. Annual fee waived first year. You also get two $25 certifcates that can be used.
- Chase Amazon: $30 Amazon gift card
- Prime members might be able to get an offer of up to $80.
- Chase AARP: $100 after $500 in spend
What the best offer is depends on your situation. If anybody knows of any higher sign up bonuses on these cards, let me know in the comments below.
William Charles hey mate, I think this page is outdated due to the expansion of the rule.
Has this list been updated since 2016?
Yes, if you see any inaccuracies let us know.
Applied for the Disney Premier Card ($49 AF, $200 Bonus) on 6/7/2016 – received 7-10 day wait message on pending decision. Was approved and showed up in my account on 6/8/16. Way over 5/24.
Good reporting, William — your credibility (and integrity) up yet another notch. (Based on your earlier report, I held off on new credit applications this year …. as conscious reserved strategy to go for SW card pair come year end…. while spouse was not so constrained…. so we are personally grateful)
By the way, don’t know if anybody noticed, but your announcement/confirmation that the Chase 5/24 rule had gone into effect was posted on….
tah dah…..
5/24
😉
Data point: Applied for United Explorer after receiving mailer invite. Application denied for 5/24.
Will…do you know if Chase is ok with getting a second Hyatt card while the first is still active? Thanks,.
Data point: Wife got approved today for Fairmont card and she has way over 5 in the last 24 including many Chase cards.
The other thread is better to consolidate the data points, i think this one is about the merits of the cards themselves.
I like the Fairmont, and Doc you might at least mention that you get 2 $25 certificates as well for applying for the Fairmont that you can use. A nice little bonus comparable to the $50 or 5,000 points on other Chase hotel cards. This is standard as part of the Fairmont application (although they do a poor job noting it).
Also, the 2 nights for the Fairmont allow usage of a room or suite upgrade on the free nights. Basically you can just get a slightly bigger room or a better view. That’s the good thing.
Now the bad…to use the certificates there has to be a standard “Fairmont room” in inventory. Not a Fairmont Gold Room, not a Deluxe Fairmont Room, but a rather generic small, no-view room. THEN to apply the room or upgrade certificate, that room would also have to be available. I’ve found Fairmont’s to have generally good availability, but don’t hesitate to call their super-nice reservations number to determine what rooms qualify.
Finally, although they have some nice city properties in the U.S., I think they have some tremendous properties in Europe and Canada (for those not wanting a long trip). Check out their hotels in Victoria, Quebec City, Banff, and Lake Louise to get an idea on some historic opportunities!
Sorry for the length of the post, but wanted to try to give a better idea on how this relatively unknown chain compares with others on their offers having struggled with a few things the first time around.
Thanks, I’ll try and do a more in depth review of the Fairmont offer since it’s not on most people’s radars.
Just spent two free nights in the Kea Lani on Maui; awesome redemption. I got a total of eight $25 certificates: four each year (ending Feb. 28), two breakfast and two spa/dining, but in practice I used them all for regular dining. The card gets you two/year and the associated status get you another two/year, I believe. A full review would be good.
