[Expired] Office Depot/Max: $15 off $300 in Visa Gift Cards

Deal has expired, view more Office Depot deals by clicking here.

The Offer

  • Office Depot/Max stores are offering a $15 instant discount when you buy $300 in Visa gift cards.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 12/16-12/22

Our Verdict

Last week, the deal was $10 off $300 on Mastercard, this week’s deal is $15 off Visa, that more-than-offsets the activation fees. You probably will have to buy $300 of cards in separate transactions to multiply this. Some stores will allow multiple transactions and others won’t.

If anyone has an image of the current deal, please send it in and we’ll add it. There’s also a $5 off $200 Visa gift card deal at Staples this week as well. Time to pull out those INK cards! There’s also a Chase Offers for 10% back on up to $100 which some people have.

Tip of the hat to Dansdeals

Ughh really? Just did $5k last week with MGC deal. Should have waited if knew another deal was coming out so quick to max out my Ink+. ~$60 in fees down the drain! ($10 vs $15)

CtownBin
CtownBin

The difference is even greater, because with Visa you can buy the Everywhere cards which have a starting fee of only $4.95 before the discount, instead of $6.95 with MC. So with this deal you end up paying $394.90 for 2 $200 cards, much better than $403.90 with the MC deal.
But I wouldn’t look at it as you “lost” the difference- you still got a good deal last week! Hopefully it doesn’t affect your ability to get another $5k this week. So enjoy round 2 ☺

Can the Everywhere’s cards be liquidated via MO? I’m not familiar with then.

veeRob

Dining Everywhere and Grocery Everywhere work fine at my Walmart.

Subhuman-Male
Subhuman-Male

Oh. Didn’t know. 🙁

iahphx
iahphx

Any other “Everywhere” cards useful?

My local Walmarts are getting pricklier about issuing MOs, so I Iike to keep my liquidation options open. “Grocery” would obviously work in any supermarket that issues MOs, right?

Mimi
Mimi

Style everywhere works for both supercenter and neighborhood markets near me. As always, YMMV, best to do a trial run before buying several Ks worth.

GE does NOT always work to buy MOs at grocery stores that’s why it’s best to do a trial run so one doesn’t get stucked with them.

RB
RB

Does Grocery Everywhere GCs work in Publix Grocery Stores (FL) to buy MOs?

veeRob

Seems like a very specific question and unlikely to get an answer on this board in this post.

miafll
miafll

Yes. The issue is finding a Publix still let you buy MO with Gebit. Publix recently has gone thru more AML training and more and more stores only allow chip cards to buy MOs.

Thanks!

@Mimi Are you saying the style everywhere cards work at your local WMs to buy MOs?

Subhuman-Male
Subhuman-Male

I get them from Customer Service instead of Money Center. Almost everyone’s exhausted at night, so I’ve never been asked to show the cards.

Used fuel everywhere at WM

bob

i’ve never risked the Dining Anywhere, but Grocery and Fashion (or Style?) work at WM no problem.

RB
RB

No issues with Walmart allowing you to use a GC to buy MOs?

Subhuman-Male
Subhuman-Male

Non-Vanilla ones work for MO. MetaBank/Sunrise/US Bank work fine. Bancorp also has some non-Visa variants, which’re also said to work.

@veeRob Are you for real? Dining Everywheres work at your Walmart to buy MOs?

Jeff
Jeff

My store is out of all the Everywheres so I’ll just have to settle for the $6.95 5-Backs (which look less like a gift card compared to the generic grey ones that have the giant Gift Card printed on them).

Mimi
Mimi

you’re still ahead with $1.10 profit PLUS CC rewards depending on which one you’re using. Of course, the best is CI+ and CIC.

There are reports that AXP has become very sensitive to purchases at OSS and this submit L3 data that’s why there are DPs they did not get their 5% on their SC+ card.

veeRob

Is your store out of them or are they just “hidden” ???

Sunk cost baby. Just remember that it could also be the opposite! You acted when the opportunity revealed it self and that’s what counts.

unless you had followed previous thread from last week, where poster ninjaX perfectly (if with a bit of wit & sarcasm) predicted what was to unfold this week — that Office Depot would offer exactly what they are now (in response to Staples’ move)

Subhuman-Male

Don’t call

Mimi
Mimi

Mine doesn’t have signs posted but it’s still works at the register as it has been the past deals. I don’t ask the store personnel, I just check the total before I insert my card to know for sure the deal is on at that store.

William Charles

Just go in store, I’m sure you’ll see it.

Subhuman-Male
Subhuman-Male

If my local OD staff gets to know about a GC promo, they hide higher denomination GCs. So it’s probably better not to ask OD.

veeRob

Subhuman-Male You haven’t figured out how to un-hide them, yet?

Subhuman-Male
Subhuman-Male

Not at OD. The Staples manager is nice & pulls up GCs from hidden inventory. Does your OD have a protocol for hiding GCs?

veeRob

All OD’s in my city have the same rack with a hidden door to open for the vendor to get at the drawers of back stock. Most of the racks are in the back of the store, so I go in and quickly find the gift cards I need without an OD employee. Only once have I been “caught” and I simply explained that I was getting the gift card I needed. They eyed me over, but I’m not stealing so what’s the problem??? 😀

James B.

I always ask an OD associate to look inside the rack with one OD exception. That OD tells me to look inside the rack for inventory.

How many you can purchase is very store/manager dependent. Some managers are super friendly and allow more than one transaction and others stand firm at only one transaction per day.

I usually limit my purchases to one or two transactions if there is a line of customers to avoid any potential conflicts with store managers. Many times I let customers behind me to go ahead in line.

I try to stay on good terms with OD associates and store managers. But several OD stores have changed policies from multiple transactions per day to only one transaction per day. YMMV.

Rowan
Rowan

Has anyone been able to figure out their motivation for pulling these kinds of b.s. moves? Are we/these transactions that annoying for them to deal with so they’d just prefer that we leave empty-handed?

They know we’ll probably show up regardless so it seems like it would just be easier to sell us stuff than having to pretend like they don’t have any of these gift cards and make up answers to questions about when they’ll be back in stock… =/

And that doesn’t even begin to touch on the inexplicable differences between the store managers who vary between outright hostility towards the gift card deals as though we’re stealing right out their pockets vs the ones who actively encourage our purchases and express appreciation for boosting their sales numbers!

Dylan
Dylan

see this all the time between stores.

You go to a WM near me and loads to BB are “$150 max per day” at the register.

Drive to a WM 3 miles from the first and they do $1000 at checkout no problems.

Everything is YMMV until the registers become hard-coded to not work.

Subhuman-Male
Subhuman-Male

Yup, highly YMMV!

Johnathon
Johnathon

I used to work for Office Depot and the reason why they hide them is because fraudsters love to use stolen credit cards to buy these so they can make off with the cash. I used to be a supervisor there and while I would not hide them (that’s unprofessional) I would severely limit the amount of cards I let a person buy. If my over ride was on that purchase and it turned out to be fraud, I was completely responsible. And asking for ID was useless due to the lack of tools we had to validate whether one was real or fake. I could care less of someone was buying giftcards to get points, it was all about fear of dealing with loss prevention if the purchase turned out to be fraud.

Yoni

Also BofA BankAmeriDeals on some cards 10% back at Staples thru 12/18 upto $6, So $21-$29 possible with Bonus coin dealsBofA Coins top tier.

Obviously not as good as 5X on Ink but you’ve maxed your annual limit on CIC otherwise the Ink Cash is a net $262 cost on $300 (CSR 1.5X base multiplier).

PSA: Some times you can get re-targeted on deals or new deals by changing your Zip code to a different region of country by changing home zip code in BofA deals sub menu: Preferences (also need to make sure location awareness is off (DEALS NEAR ME = Deny permission).

The deal definitely worked in SoCal, but no signage in the store. The store had signs from 2 prior promos, but no current one. Thanks for posting!

Saw the same thing in SoCal at one store… old sign was up, but deal still worked. Other store had the sign up.

I have chase offer on my freedom card. (
10% off, $10 max)
Can I combine it with 5% chase pay/Samsung pay offer?

NeGourmand

It’s kind of hard to get excited about these deals any more..I hit the rewards glitch pretty hard, and was getting $400 of mcgc for $325ish consistently. $5 + cc rewards doesn’t really do it for me now, plus the pain of liquidating $200 cards.

Subhuman-Male
Subhuman-Male

Rewards glitch?

veeRob

Yeah, that was a good one. But unless a glitch comes along again, this is as good as it gets. I’ll be hitting it hard this week.

Went in and bought 2×200 visas…the blue wrapped metabank issued ones…despite the $15 off 300 sign, they did not ring up 15 off. Not sure if it was just that specific sku, but you may want to try variable load or a different packaging option if your office max/depot has it

For those of you that were successful, did you buy fixed 200 or variable load, and what packaging?

Mimi
Mimi

If you can find the “everywhere” Visa i.e., Dining, Grocery, Style, I bought them in pairs and paid $394.90 a pair.

Dylan
Dylan

I had to sign up for office depot rewards and the fee came off after I gave the CSR my number.

miafll
miafll

No. you dont.
What you need is the Printed Receipt function – either you pick that option on the screen popped up after cashier rang up the cards or the cashier can do that on his/her screen – need that little step to activate the discount.

Also if you use your OD reward number, you can only do 3 consecutive transactions on one register. There is other velocity measures as well.

The best approach is NOT to use your reward account number unless you want to get flagged. lol

Or you care too much of the $4 rebate for a quarter from OD purchase. Yes, the rebate is capped at $4 from GC purchases each quarter… then you give them your reward number.

Subhuman-Male
Subhuman-Male

My receipts (on OD website) indicate that GCs are excluded from rebates at all! 0 rebate on them.

Lily
Lily

OD changed policy more than 6 months ago so that visa/Mastercard gc don’t earn any rewards anymore.

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

Weird…mine said up to 2.5k no license.

Tony
Tony

Mine was 2k. Need to fill paper work for 2.5k and up to 9.5k a day.

miafll
miafll

it is not weird at all. It all depends on the store’s management on how much required a form.
Mine needs a form for anything over $1K but they happily take phone-in order up to 9.5K from us and have forms in file all filled in for us.

It amazes me that to this day people can still think every place involved in the process would act the same all over the country.

For that matter, reporting how the stores behave in one’s locale without revealing where it is, is absolutely meaningless because it does not help anyone.

This thing is extremely localized, even within same city different stores may be less than 2 miles apart would still behave differently, just sayin.

Ryan
Ryan

did you deposit to your bank?

JBTx
JBTx

No sign in store. Did $200 variable load – worked just fine. Did just 1 set (I use for real spend only) but nice easy way to get some UR points.

Dylan
Dylan

Heres what ive observed regarding buying multiples and what CSRs will/will not let you do it:

I went to the office depot closest to me and they were only one per customer. This store was very busy and filled with people.

Then i went to another office depot a few miles from my house and thry let me do multiple. This story had probably one person in it and barely anyone was there

Conclusion: you will be more likely to buy multiples in emptier stores while busier stores will restrict you.

Steve
Steve

You are reaching a conclusion based on two points of data?

Was one store facing east, and the other west?

Did one store have an odd street number, and the other even?

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

Counter DP –

The busiest store in my area allows usually up to 4-5 transactions, while less busy stores are typically restricted to 1 per day.

Mikey
Mikey

YMMV can apply regarding location and policy, and that seems to be the case here. Very common to see differences like this. My nearest Walgreens, for example, will not accept credit cards for ANY gift card purchases. Others have no problems purchasing >$1K/day. That’s why all data points are appreciated – no one is wrong, just relaying what happened to them in their own geographic location.

Dylan
Dylan

This is something I have also observed at staples stores.

Immediately dismissing datapoints as wrong is what encourages people to not contribute.

This is simply what I have observed based on a few stores I have gone to. Everything in this hobby is YMMV.

McPeePee

Is Steve a Prick?

Mikey

Don’t be so snarky. Regardless of whether it fits your criteria of logical the reader was sharing an experience. You’re under no obligation to accept their conclusion, but others might consider it relevant and certainly have the right both to read about the experience and use their own judgment. And whether a store is busy could reasonably affect a cashier’s actions whereas which direction a store faces is irrelevant.

Once i get the MO, how to use it other than rent and utilities. Can we deposit the MO in bank account? Someone told me that depositing in bank would be flagged as additional income to IRS? Is that to true ?

Sarah D
Sarah D

I’ve not heard that. But even if it were true, MS is not illegal and the worst case scenario is that it does raise suspicion and you get audited, which is only a problem if you are trying to hide something else.

The main concern I’ve seen with depositing money orders is that the bank itself might not like it and shut you down. So don’t do it at your main bank. I opened a local key bank account for the $200 sign up bonus and left it open for this exact purpose.

Rowan
Rowan

Please read up on structuring. It’s a very serious federal anti-money laundering charge related to money order purchases and deposits. I haven’t heard about any manufactured spending folks getting in trouble for this but it’s important to be aware of its existence and what the store employees and banks are looking for and reporting on with their SAR’s (suspicious activity reports that go to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network).
