5x Points with NBA Card Ends Today, Few Hours Left

The BBVA NBA card is currently earning 5x rewards on all purchases. Originally, many were having problems, but more recently we’re hearing more positive news, both on the earnings potential and the general ease of using the card without freezes.

We reported that the exact dates of the 5x rewards are June 4 – June 18, meaning that they lopped one day off the end.  A reader mentioned that he got written confirmation from BBVA that the 5x promo goes on until June 20.

With things like these, it’s hard to rely on what the CSRs are saying so we reached out to their media team on Twitter and mentioned the conflicting reports. They confirmed that it does end on June 18, meaning in a few hours.

Note that for online transactions, it’s a little trickier and it’s quite possible that any online transactions made today will not earn the 5x rewards. See Online Credit Card Purchases – Transaction Date and Post Date.

Despite the fact that multiple reps under no vague terms confirmed that as long as the ‘transaction’ date is during the promo period (6/4-6/18), regardless of the ‘post’ date, would earn 5X points, it seems at this point that the post date is what matters. None of my transactions that posted after 6/18 received the additional promo points.

I created a little spread sheet and, the missing rewards match up exactly (to the cent) the additional 4X bonus (as 1X has already been paid) for charges that although had a transaction date during the promo period, ended up posting on 6/19 and 6/20 (I have nothing that posts after 6/20).

I am hoping they ‘fix’ this without my having to call in. But, losing faith in this outcome given that 11 days have gone by.

From my BBVA cc statement:

“Plus, take advantage of our Summer Travel promotion from June 25- July 9, spend $1,000 on travel (air, hotel, car rental) and you can earn 5,000 bonus points!”

Does anyone have details on this?

Got my statement today. Unfortunately no mention of breakdown of points. Will have to rely on that wonderful website I guess.

Statement mentions next bonus is a summer travel promotion of 5000 points for $1000 spend on travel June 25-july 9. Any tips on how to get there with manufactured spend? Airline gift cards perhaps?

That’s a 6%? bonus. You should be able to buy airline gift cards for cheaper than that on a 3rd party site.

Man, BBVA’s customer support was just the worst. Good riddance to any reason to use this card for a while.

A tip for the next promo (if they do this again) is right before it starts, call them and tell them you’re traveling abroad – this raises your daily spending limit from $5000/day to $15,000/day. This was told to me directly by the “Declinations Department” which so many of us got the joy of speaking with after a high-value AGC locked our accounts up.

Another fun bit: BBVA’s Fraud/Security department can clear fraud alerts, but it’s their Declinations Department (1-855-634-1450) that are the ones that can clear your card immediately so that you can resume using your card.

My line got freed up from my payment the 10K payment I made last week. Apparently it takes 7 days for a hold to be removed and not 10 days that the rep on the phone stated. Enough time for me to do another quick run. Called them today and said I was going to buy furniture and they raised my daily limit to 15K. Spent 13K Will see if I get the bonus points from today.

My spending was going fine, but they won’t reset my credit line, so I’ve been stuck for 3 days. My previous payment reset my line much quicker.

I don’t know what’s going on with their rewards site either…it’s hard to track purchases. They got rid of the breakdown for me on what type of purchase it was.

What are the chances do you think that they will continue this promotion next year?

I just called BBVA. I was told that purchases must post in the promotion period to earn bonus points. The majority of my purchases have taken several days to post. I think people shouldn’t expect to get bonus points on purchases made today unless you’re sure they’ll post right away.

Agree – it will not be by post date but transaction date. You don’t have control over post date and thus a promotional period is meaningless.
