[Expired] Amazon: Microsoft 365 Personal $28-$42 Cost After Amazon Giftcard (12-month Office subscription)

The Offer

(affiliate links below)

These deals are limit 1.

Our Verdict

This used to be called Microsoft Office 365 Home and now is rebranded to Microsoft 365 Family. This offer is significantly better than previous similar deals we’ve seen in the past. After the Amazon gift card, it basically ends up $28.88 for the single or $42.95 for the family version with six users.

In the past, readers have said it’s possible to use this to add to an existing subscription. (Apparently, up to 4 years of extension can be done. Beyond that, you can save the code and use it a later date, I suppose.) See also this comment for more discussion.

Note, some people might prefer buying the download version instead of the subscription version. Do some research to decide which model and version is best for you.

Also note, this purchase through Amazon sets up an Amazon auto renewal of the Microsoft 365 product. It also converts your Microsoft account billing to be managed through Amazon’s subscription page. You need to go in and make sure to turn off the auto renew feature on the Amazon subscription page. See also this comment for more discussion.

Definitive guide. Hopefully it can save people the trouble I had. Worked in July 2022.

Q: Can this extend my existing Office 365 subscription?
A: Yes. Even though Amazon says they start the subscription right away, it actually adds on to your existing subscription. Go through the activation process on your existing account and several minutes after activation your renewal date will be updated on Amazon.

Q: Can I buy multiple years and stack?
A: Yes, as long as Amazon lets you buy multiple (for this deal they do). Go through the activation process one after the other. After several minutes your renewal date will be extended on Amazon.

Q: Can I buy the personal plan and then upgrade to family?
A: Yes. I bought two years of Personal, applied them through Amazon, and then added the family one (also bought through Amazon) last. Amazon doesn’t like this and they marked all my subscriptions “canceled” in the Amazon dashboard. MS still thinks the subscription is managed by Amazon so doesn’t show the expiry date. However, I called in to MS Office 365 support and they confirmed that I now had MS Office Family until 2025 (3 years). Slick deal!

Chuck  William Charles this makes this an even better deal since you can get Family for ~the price of the personal. Worth mentioning as the deal ends tonight?

Also it’s not limit 1 despite the post.

Just bought this hoping it would extend my existing Amazon Microsoft 365 subscription. It didn’t. It shows up as two subscriptions which completely overlap. Contacted customer service via chat hoping they could link the two. They said it wasn’t possible and that there was no way to extend an existing subscription. They were able to issue me a refund for the subscription amount ($44.61). But the gift card was billed separately and is non-refundable (no big deal since I’ll use it).

Did you have to redeem the subscription immediately or could you hold it til your existing subscription expires?

I didn’t activate it, so maybe I could have just waited until my previous subscription expired. But it showed the new one expiring 12-months from today, so I didn’t want to risk it. Seemed easier to just get a refund. My existing subscription doesn’t end until 8/2023, so I’ll just hope there’s a similar deal next year.

Ah, FWIW I just went through the process and if you go through activation, it adds it to your existing O365 expiry date through Microsoft. Deal is still on if you want to buy JohnF

I can confirm @Slickdealer’s experience.
I’ve done this deal previously, and have an existing Microsoft account with an active subscription managed by Amazon that doesn’t expire for a few more months. When I purchased another year with the current deal, it showed up as a separate one year subscription just as you describe.
I clicked through to activate the new subscription with my existing Microsoft account and after doing that, within a couple minutes the Amazon subscriptions page had updated to show a single subscription with one year added to my previous expiration date. So it seems to work, but you have to go through the process of adding it to your Microsoft account before it will update the expiration date.

I’ve been getting by with the online versions of excel and Word but this will be a good time to upgrade. Thanks  Chuck

I saw a hack where you can buy multiple one person plans and then buy a family plan and will renew the remaining years at the family plan subscription.
I accidently did it the other way so don’t think it will work. though i’m curios what would happen should i activate a one person plan on my family plan?

This sounds great. Got more info? How many years get upgraded for free?

Meaning should you buy 3 years of the one person plan, then a year of a family plan. They claim the 3 years and the one new year will all become a family plan. If that works that’s pretty cool.

Though I’m curios what would happen if you buy a 1 person plan and add it? What would happen with it?

the amazon deal is only to purchase one correct? so how do you get 3 years of one person plan at a sale price?

I never did it but I saw someone that had success.

Basically bought 3 years of the personal 365.
Then the last year he bought a family plan so he would get 4 years of family plan for the price of one family plan and 3 personal plan.

FYI, amazon’s subscription system is a mess. If you have a current existing subscription purchased directly through Microsoft or Best Buy or Newegg, the Amazon subscription system won’t extend your current subscription. Amazon will move you to a new one and could even cut your existing one short. Basically Amazon doesn’t play nice with other companies and makes you use Amazon’s subscription manager

If you have an existing Amazon subscription, then it should work

that is not true. My previous subscription was from costco and I just activated the one from Amazon. Even though it says it will end 07/13/23, as soon as I cancel the auto renewal on Amazon, it correctly shows my subscription is extended and now expires in December 2023

my experience: I have had an existing 365 Family directly with Microsoft (was to expire in Sep 2022). First I canceled auto-renew there. Then purchased a new subscription on Amazon, proceeded with activation instructions in the email using the existing Microsoft account. Amazon correctly extended the subscription until Sep 2023, and I haven’t had to cancel auto-renew in Amazon.

I never tried doing it that way of buying 3 personal plans and then the 4th a family plan.
Though some say it worked for them. So…
But I just bought 4 keys and added them a and Amazon combined the expiration date.
