American Express Changes Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant $300 Credit (Replaced With $25 Monthly Dining Credit)

American Express has made a major change to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant $300 annual credit. Currently it can be used for purchases made at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy. As of 9/22/22 cardholders will instead receive a $25 monthly credit for restaurants worldwide.

At first I thought this was a major negative change as I read it was only being valid on Marriott dining, but that isn’t the case and it’s valid on restaurants worldwide. It’s annoying dealing with another monthly credit but I didn’t really find this card worth keeping long term anyway. I think for people that did find this card worth keeping this will be a net negative as they were likely spending $300 at Marriott properties anyway.

There is a play where you could sign up for the card now (or just before 9/22/22), use the $300 credit and then get almost a year of $25 dining credits but the bonus on the card is only 75,000 points at the moment so that isn’t exactly exciting.

Surely, they won’t change this for existing cardholders who have paid the annual fee within the 12 months preceding the change. Part of the value proposition of paying a $450 annual fee was the $300 Marriott credit. I can see this new policy being implemented for future anniversary annual fees, but surely they won’t change it for cardholders who have already paid the annual fee. Can someone confirm how this will work?

Same. VERY interested here – since I’m a cardholder and I’ve heard nothing about this. I have a trip planned for the end of August, and I have no clue if I will have a $300/credit to use or not….

I hate having to make sure I use credits month to month. Restaurants in general SHOULD be easy, but still, I don’t really care for this change. Don’t love it, but don’t massively despise it either.

You get both 300 for the anniversary year and 25 a month starting October. Makes sense to keep the card.

are you sure its both?

The change isn’t until September 22. Why wouldn’t you have credit to use in August?

Read the announcement. It’s plainly written you won’t have access to the $300 credit after 9/22.

I agree.. what if somebody got the card back in May, and intended to use $300 credit in Feb 2023? That person got the card with specific T&C. Cannot imagine they would change it mid term

This was a pretty straightforward value proposition: pre-pay $300 & a FNC for $450, and you get status, elite nights, and premium perks. Great for people who didn’t want to invest in the high-end cards like CSR, but wanted insurance, Priority Pass, Global Entry, etc.

Now it’s basically the $95/yr Chase Bonvoy card, but tacks a dining credit onto a card earning <2% on dining. Plus it's an Amex, so fewer restaurants will take it.

Good for the short term it seems. Most of us should have anniversary dates in late August (when the card was first released). So you should be able to get the $300 marriott credit and then another $300 in restaurants this year. But starting in 2023 may be a negative for some.

You’ve been bonvoyed

Being “bonvoyed” is actually a consistent state, it’s not a one time or periodic event. A person who is a member of the Marriott’ Bonvoy loyalty program is in a perpetual state of bonvoyed.

I was on the fence about cancelling when my AF comes due in November, but not anymore. I’m already getting platinum and gold card Uber credits doled out monthly, the gold card dripping $10 per month to me on a narrow slice of restaurants, and now what should be a pure Marriott focused card being focused on…restaurants? Like almost every other card out there? I know it comes with a now very watered down annual “free” night, but so does my Chase Marriott card.

Cancel.

Happy that my credit resets in August.

Welcome to another subscription world. Thanks Amex!!

Will there be a $25 credit offered for September 2022? (i.e. if we make a restaurant purchase between Sep 23-30)

I don’t think so. Everything I have read makes it sound like the dining credits start in October.

It’s the MARRIOTT Bonvoy Brilliant. Why is Amex so stupid to change MARRIOTT credits into dining credits. So stupid.

My best guess is that their contract was up. Amex sent their guy to marriott corp to negotiate the new deal and they couldn’t agree to a number amex wanted. Amex prob wanted Mary to pay like 50% of the free nights costs or something. Amex knows their breakage number for the dining credit because of data on their other cards and Marriott wanted more than that number because their business model of reimbursing hotel owners for rewards nights is costing them more and more as hotel occupancy goes up.

That’s bad news for churners. You were able to get 2 x $300 with 1 AF.

You can still get 2x $300 with 1 AF but they are $300 Marriott + $300 dining credit

Can you explain this? I’m not understanding what you are saying about 2x $300.
