American Express Sends Out Business Platinum Charges Survey ($695 Annual Fee, $1,000 In Credits & MR Cash Out Option)

American Express has sent out a survey regarding possible changes to the Business Platinum card, often American Express does this ahead of card changes but sometimes these changes don’t come to fruition. Some of the changes were as follows:

  • Annual fee increase to $695 (up from $595)
  • $1,000 in B2B partner credits. Get up to $1,000 in statement credits annually for U.S. purchases with partners in categories like Computing (e.g., Dell), Food Delivery, Rideshare and Account on your Business Platinum card
  • Ability to redeem rewards into AmEx business checking account (100 points = $1 so 1¢ per point)
  • Ability to earn 1.5x Membership Rewards points on shipping, construction and electronics
  • Free CLEAR membership
  • Cell phone protection ($800 per claim, up to $1,600 per 12 month period)
  • Removal of $200 airline fee credit

It’s hard to know how useful or bad these changes would be, mainly because there isn’t a lot of detail regarding the B2B credits. Personally don’t hate the removal of the airline credits as they are always a bit of a pain to use

$1000 in B2B credits with select merchants? Guess I’d need to see that list of merchants. I’m Mac based, so dell credit sucks. I do normally use the airline credit as I need to travel with lots of equipment checked as baggage. A straight airline credit would be far better though. But shipping and construction are not part of my business. Amex tends to lump businesses together thinking they all need office stuff, gas, etc. which further alienates businesses that don’t spend on that stuff. Might be time to cancel.

How about they end the card and make it into a Platinum Plus so I can get my SUB again

Who are these business cards meant for? At $695 you’re better off buying the blasted items/services with a flat % back card. That fee is so high the sunken cost alone would cloud anyone’s spending decisions.

These changes aren’t even final yet, but I am outraged like all of you because nothing evokes outrage like wild speculation.

All these crazy credits are getting out of hand, especially with higher annual fees. The risk is shoved to the cardholder to “pay first” and then try to retrieve value over the year with credits that may or may not show up depending on the merchant and circumstance. Keeping track of all of this is a serious pain and likely wastes more time than any of us would like to admit. Glad I cancelled this card a while back, it really does not offer much in my view.

If you don’t get 4x on selected categories, like with the Business Gold, then it’s not worth it to me.

Yes, I’m hearing it’s 150k MR points. When you spend $40,000 usd in the first 2 weeks. Jk.

I think the bigger more immediate issue is there hasn’t been much added value to the Biz Plat this year, unlike the personal plats. A measly WeWork discount isn’t cutting it. Maybe one is coming but they sure are waiting a long time to add it if so.
