American Express WeWork Benefits Released and Available for Signup

[Update 2/8/19: Benefit is now available for signup. Again, it’s not smart to signup now if you don’t intend to use it right away. Wait until you are ready to use it, and then you’ll get a year from that signup date.]

One of the changes going into effect on the American Express Business Platinum is the addition of:

  • One year of complimentary Platinum Global Access from WeWork ($2,700 value), a network of premium workspaces around the world. With Platinum Global Access, enjoy over 300 workspaces in 75+ cities and 20+ countries.

WeWork has now created a dedicated landing page for this offer that can be found here. Some details:

  • You will be available to sign up for this benefit starting on 2/8/2019 (12:00 a.m. EST)
  • You must enroll in this benefit by 12/31/2019

As we’ve alluded to previously it looks like you could sign up on 12/31/2019 and keep this benefit until 12/31/2020. It also looks like this will just be a one time benefit, rather than an ongoing annual benefit always offered.

There’s been no official word on if legacy cardholders will have this benefit (and Dell benefit) right?

VL
VL

My Amex contact confirmed that all existing members will be able to enroll in both. But need to enroll first before you can use it (for Dell similarly as for airline credit).

MrDioji
MrDioji

That would be great. I signed up for 100k offer today with lower AF, so I’m “legacy” haha

Debit
Debit

Haha. Amex trying to fly under the radar. Increase the annual fee and increase the benefits but only for one year. Boiling the frog in the water

Jed

If I enroll in the benefit will I keep the benefit for a full year even if i cancel the Amex card?

Chicagoan33
Chicagoan33

+1. Maybe we can call a Wework office once this goes live to see if we need to bring our Amex card. Or I wonder if it is linked like how Priority Pass is on other credit cards where if the cc is canceled PP gets canceled.

veeRob

Looks like it’s a one time signup, so I don’t think you’d need your Amex card once you’re processed.

Sol
Sol

Priority pass is also a one to time sign up, but still doesn’t work If you cancel your card. So nut sure your point

“Please make sure to bring your U.S. Amex Business Platinum Card and photo I.D. for your first visit to WeWork. Let the Community team at the front desk know you are a Platinum Global Access member, and they will set up your keycard or help with any other needs you may have before you get to work.”

Bill
Bill

Right you need to bring your card in to validate a new membership but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will cancel the membership if you cancel the card. The terms say they can, but I honestly don’t know if its worth the effort for them since this is a one time deal of only one year unlike PP which continues year after year as long as you hold the card. I see this as more of a trial offer for wework where they hope to get people hooked so that after the year some of them will consider buying a membership.

Brad
Brad

The page just went live and states:
“Your year of complimentary Platinum Global Access may be cancelled if you do not have an eligible Card or if you cancel your Card membership before the year ends. Before enrolling in the offer, WeWork and American Express will verify your offer eligibility.”

Grant

Every single AMEX Biz Plat member should sign up for the most expensive WeWork plan, even if you never use it. Cost AMEX money!

On a side note, WeWork spaces are pretty cool and usually have free beer on tap 🙂

Debit
Debit

I don’t think amex is paying for it. Or very minimal.

Frank

So that they don’t have cash to offer better sign up bonuses? No. You should NOT sign up for it and complain that it is useless so they focus on other benefits…

Emporio
Emporio

Is there a limit to how often you can use these workspaces? I didn’t see any offer terms and conditions on the Wework website.

MrDioji

I’m sure there will be some sort of restrictions. Just a “hot desk” is at least $350 a month, so $4,200 per year. They value the benefit at $2,700 so I wonder what it will be. Perhaps just access to the community space. I’m in it for the free coffee. It’s 1 block from my real office.

CTW
CTW

Disagree, here in atl, all but one location have hot desks under $250 a month. It is possible the $2700 is an average.

Emily
Emily

DFW-area WeWorks are technically $350 or even $380 (!) but I know literally nobody actually paying that price. Everybody gets some kind of ~exclusive deal~. WeWork may need to be careful about that so they don’t degrade their brand, especially since the spaces are pretty chic (for an office) and pleasant to work in.

Tzvi

I have 2 of these cards, do you think I’ll be able to sign up on 2/8 for the first one and then 12/31 for the second?

Mo2
Mo2

@Tzvi
Why not?

Tzvi
Tzvi

It might be one per person on wework’s end.
I’ll prob just have to wait and see.

Intersting to see that

*This offer is made available by WeWork and not by American Express. Platinum Global Access is a product of WeWork subject to WeWork’s terms and conditions, and is only available to the Basic Card Member of a Business Platinum Card account.

I think WeWork is just making advertisement via amex and they will discontinue the benefit soon after they make themselves known.

Alex
Alex

WeWork has been around since 2010 and is incredibly well known. A lot of their offices don’t even have space available for new members anymore. Not sure they need the advertisement. They’re constantly expanding as it is.

Debit
Debit

I know what it is. This benefit is useless. They will only pay 2700/12. You pay the rest per month. So wework still makes money off of you cuz their cost is nothing. A discount on overpriced shit doesn’t make that shit smell like roses.

You can give me an award when this is exactly how it will work.

MrDioji
MrDioji

Except that it’s “complimentary access”, not a credit/discount.

Emily
Emily

This comment is so aggressive. Maybe this benefit is so thoroughly utterly completely unbelievably useless for you, but it’s actually valuable for the right person. Have you ever even been inside a WeWork before?

It’s fascinating to me how angry people get over new credit card benefits that aren’t precisely tailored to their very specific lives and expectations.

Debit
Debit

Yeah. I am not stopping you from signing up for it. Or even trying to influence you.

Emily
Emily

Then why comment in such a heated tone at all, especially when it’s all speculation and no facts? *shrug* I like this blog because it approaches churning in a level-headed and reasonable way; let’s not shift the Overton window too far.

COBOLCODERUSEALLCAPS
COBOLCODERUSEALLCAPS

I think Debit owns a “business” and signed up for the Biz Plat for the 100k bonus like most people on /r/churning (I am in this category as well), hence the uselessness to him for this benefit. I do disagree with the tone since I can telecommute and make good use of the offices. I could also use this as a personal bar for when I feel like getting drunk on free beer.

CM

Well, the WeWork’s landing page doesn’t really mention anything useful, other than the starting date of 2019-02-08 at 00:00 ET.

My main question is whether it’ll come with an RFID card to any workspaces, or whether you have to book it through the app (as the page says) and access during business hours only (which end by 17:00 or 18:00, who knows). Because if it’s limited to business-hours-only, then it’s much less useful than a proper 24/7 access.

In fact, their page specifically never mentions 24/7, even though their spaces are 24/7, and specifically does mention some sort of a stupid app. Has anyone used their app, or know anyone who has? Does it by any chance have RFID support, or any other way to open up the doors to access the space outside of business hours? If so, I take the above statements back, and that’d be really cool; but I’m also trying to be realistic.

Bill
Bill

What I want to know is if this would include use of conference rooms or not. That is about the only thing I would need from wework.

Jeremy
Jeremy

Access to conference rooms is handled through “credits” that are purchased as add-ons to the account. Something like 2 credits for $50 will get you a conference room for the hour.

CM

It definitely wouldn’t include unlimited access to conference rooms, that I can guarantee you. You might get something like 2h of free use per month max.

Bill
Bill

And yet I still don’t have enough information about what wework is actually offering to be able to determine if its worth keeping the card. Way to keep us informed Amex.

Onsale
Onsale

kinda infuriating that they won’t tell you what it is. When I went to chat (because the pop-up window presents right in your face) they seem to be more interested in my email address. ugh…

Ben
Ben

Do they have any locations in NY or NJ?

Rox
Rox
sloebrake

They claim to have the most office space of any business in NYC – 5.2million square ft. Bigger than Chase.

Reports also say they are losing like ~1.5 billion dollars a year. At least they have more cash than Uber.

CM

“As we’ve alluded to previously it looks like you could sign up on 12/31/2019 and keep this benefit until 12/31/2020”

Where exactly did you allude to this before?! This has not been mentioned by anyone previously.

Why are you so angry?

If I used WeWork this could be a great benefit. But I don’t, so it isn’t.

NinjaX
NinjaX

as many other skeptics have said already, this shit is YMMV. lets see on 2/8.

i already use co-working spaces, but make no mistake, this is just an “introductory Priority Pass Select offer for one year sign-up bonus” (aka membership to starbucks cafe space only for one year).

there are only two options for this crap:
1) a real wework membership at the lowest tier which is a Hot Desk (highly doubt it)
2) black sheep nerfed priority pass select membership w/ many restrictions only for one year as a “try out” (highly likely)

its obvious because they need to come up with a totally different product name for this offer which is “Platinum Global Access”. everyone has been in the game long enough to know what that means.

furthermore, a limited time one year offer is totally useless as many have said. i guess you could churn biz plats for ongoing access but i would rather have limited ongoing discounts like global entry. imagine amex giving one year priority pass membership? one year centurion “introductory offer” membership? same thing.

Yoni
Yoni

Yeah reading the Derp report it sounds like you get access to public space with lounge skin to a nice hotel lobby, with free wi-fi, nano brewed coffee, macta green tea and beer. But no guest or visitors – so no meeting a client.

So it’s hard to see basic access = $2,700/yr

T

CM

You might be a coworker user, but you don’t know what you’re talking about here. The reason they need a new name is that all current memberships are local to a specific single building, and Global Access credits are limited to 2 a month (and you officially have to use these even if you want to access a WeWork in another part of the same downtown you have a local membership in).

In fact, I posted all of this in the prior posts, but of course it’s easy to just bash a benefit without actually figuring out what it’s for.

Sure, an ongoing membership could be great. Is a 12mo helpful as well?! You bet it’ll be! Even 09:00 to 18:00 memberships are no small change, and we still don’t have any proof that these will be limited in time once you signup during business hours, because it does mention a keycard being setup.

veeRob

A lot of speculation on what is and what isn’t included makes it a very poorly rolled out promotion, you have to admit that!
