Amex Makes it Easy to Close Out Cards or Authorized Users via Automated Chat

Sometime recently, Amex added the ability to close cards to their chat functionality. You should see the ‘Chat’ icon in the bottom-right corner when logged in, and from there you can close a card, usually without any human intervention at all.

The system gives the choice to either cancel the account entirely or cancel authorized users on the account.

A few people have been mentioning this so I thought it’s worth a post. Sometimes you really want a retention offer, in which case you’ll want to connect with a real person (not sure if they give retention offers via live chat reps; you might need to call in for that). But if you really just want to cancel the card this is a simple option.

I imagine a lot of people will be cancelling cards or removing authorized user cards from their accounts since Amex Offers are now limited to one per account.

This worked today. Chat took me to a rep but they easily cancelled the card.

This doesn’t appear to be working anymore. I tried typing “Cancel a card” into the chat, and kept getting a message saying that “we were unable to establish a chat connection.” Same issue when I used the chat feature in the app (though here I didn’t receive a message, just no response). There definitely was not a problem with my connection, as the chat worked when I tried typing in other options.

This seems to be on an account by account basis. I was able to cancel a card on my account through the automated system, but my SO gets redirected to a person.

Where’s the chat icon? I don’t see it even when logged in, and I can’t find it anywhere. When I go to their “contact us” page, one of the fields is labeled “Chat” but there is no clickable link there. If I search for “cancel a card”, the only relevant answer says I need to phone them.
Using Windows 7 and Chrome but surely that is not the source of the issue….

To get the “Chat” icon, I had to click on the “My Accounts” icon on the upper right of the main page.
That said, the system would not let me cancel a card automatically — I got a human to chat with.

I’m in Chat with them right now, closing a Delta Gold Skymiles card. Got routed to a Chat rep. Chat rep is trying to get me to PC the card to the no-AF Delta Blue. No “retention” offered LOL.

You closed 2 cards? Why? Wont that Lil your credit score?

When I did this just now, I got routed to a chat CSR (no automated tree). Bummer.

That option has been available for a while, what seems to be new is that it actually cancels the card now, as opposed to making you go through the motions only to be transferred to a CSR, who in the past didn’t see any of the cancellation request.

I’m not convinced Amex won’t somehow make multiple offers available again. And with new-found ability to get more than 4-5 credit cards, I’d be loathe to close AUs and then go thru the rigamarole of ordering new AUs and setting up logins again.

With the demise of SPG, there aren’t any new Amex cards I’m interested in anyway, at least not for unbonused spend that I used to put on SPG – now all that spend is on 2% everywhere cards from other issuers….

Unbelievable that Amex hasn’t improved Membership Rewards to attempt to keep all those abandoning SPG as their everyday spend cards. Just shows how clueless Amex is these days. With the demise of Offers and SPG, Amex has gone from hands-down best issuer to second tier. Truly pathetic.

Maybe because not everyone MSs?

I, for one, am going to get the SPG Luxury Card even if you won’t.
