Notes about Membership Purchase

The fine print stipulates:

  • Valid only on a new Sam’s Club Membership (Savings, Business or Plus) purchased in-Club at a Sam’s Club location in the 50 U.S. states
  • Not valid on membership renewals, upgrades, add-ons or additional membership or any purchase of Sam’s Club Gift of Membership or Prepaid Sam’s Savings Membership

Tips & Notes

  • Let your past membership expire and sign up for a new one; that should work to trigger the offer. If you still have a bit of time left on your Sam’s membership on September 30 when this Amex Offer expires, try going along with a family member and opening a second membership under their name.
  • Previous Sam’s membership offers were truly limited to membership purchases, and we assume this one will work the same. No way to fool it by purchasing gift cards at the Member Services desk; this offer will only get you membership, nothing else.
  • If you have the offer on multiple Amex cards, you should be able to buy Sam’s Club Plus membership for $100 and split the charge between two cards, reducing the cost of Plus to just $10. I’d guess this would work to trigger two Amex Offers. (Plus membership gives you 2% cash back rewards on your Sam’s purchases paid out at year’s end, among other perks. See this Comparison Chart for more details.)

Update: Multiple people are reporting that Sam’s ends up charging BOTH cards $100 when you try splitting up the $100 between two cards. This is obviously a bug/glitch and you should be able to fight the charge, but beware.

Our Verdict

Interesting to see such aggressive marketing by Sam’s. First they offer a temporary free membership to Costco members through July 4th, then they add a $10 bonus for whoever signs up for a paid membership (details above), then they release this Amex Offer making membership effectively free.

This offer is targeted, and I couldn’t find it on any of my cards or AU cards, unfortunately. If you do have this offer, try going in to Sam’s today or tomorrow (July 3 or July 4) so that you’ll get the extra $10 Sam’s gift card. Just make sure to check out their holiday hours schedule.

Remember that Chase Freedom is offering 5x at Wholesale Clubs, including Sam’s, until year’s end. You can spend $1,500 in July – September and $1,500 in October – December and get 5x on that spend. That’s another bonus for shopping at Clubs.

And Sam’s has the best gift card options from all Wholesale Clubs, so even if you aren’t enamored with doing your regular shopping at Wholesale Clubs, it might be worth taking out this membership to be able to buy up gift cards at Sam’s or samsclub.com. (Sam’s Club accepts all major U.S. credit cards.)

I did the same thing as Steve. Spent 45 on one card and 55 plus tax on another card. Couple days later, both cards were charged with 100 each. I did get 45 credit on each account as well.

I am debating whether I should dispute the charges with them. I hope that wont make them take back the credits…. Anyone who had similar situation please share their dispute experience…

Like others here, I went for the $100 Plus membership (they offered a $25 GC instead of $10) and split it on two cards, the SPG ($45) and PRG ($55). No email congrats showed up – I assumed it meant they were reviewing these manually to be sure it was a membership charge. Then a few days later, they migrated the whole $100 to my SPG and gave me a single $45 credit back for a $55 remaining charge The other $55 on PRG is still pending, but I assume it will disappear soon. Sam’s Club had said that a person could downgrade their Plus membership at any time and get the difference back. I think I’ll be doing that sometime.

I purchased a new membership with my Amex card and managed to also get the $10 GC. I was offered a $5000 Sam’s credit card and declined when one CSR stated a hard pull would happen.

Looked around and did find the GC display. Really nothing to my liking, except one for SWA. $142 and change for (3) $50 GC.

There was a display for movies that gave e-Movie rewards, up to $8 per tix. A few are priced @$5

Did anyone have issues with how the charge is posting to AmEx when split across 2 cards? I went for the Plus membership and paid with 2 AmExes to trigger 2 offers.. When the charge was pending both showed $50 each, now however, the first AmEx shows a charge of $100 and no charge for the second AmEx!

That’s exactly what happened to me. It’s fine if they have the policy that you can only use 1 credit card for a membership but they should tell us that BEFORE we make the purchase. My membership charged tax. Did yours?

No mine did not.. It was $110 along with the GC and then $10 discount with the code to bring it down to $100. Receipt shows 2 payments of $50 each charged to 2 AmExes.

Btw, is that really Sam’s Club policy? Single card for membership?

I have no idea. I wrote “if” it’s their policy. Did your store have $500 MC gc in it?

I opened up disputes with AmEx since the final charge posted was showing as $100 on both cards. I did get the $45 credit on both but the transaction amount is incorrect. Since another reader here has had the same issue, I would caution those trying to do the Plus membership and splitting it across 2 cards.

Same thing happened to me. I haven’t opened any disputes yet though. Hopefully AmEx will simply refund $50.00 back to each card, without impacting offer credits received. Has AmEx resolved things for you yet?

My 2 Amex cards were also charged $100 each instead of $45. Oddly my 3rd credit card (not an Amex) which I charged the remaining $17 to was charged correctly. Do you think it’s a better idea to contact Sam’s Club instead of Amex to see if they’ll refund me the $110 that I was overcharged? I am a little hesitant to contact Amex since my 2 $45 credits did post and I’d prefer that doesn’t get taken away.

I used 2 amex cards for $45 each plus 1 different card for the last $10. My card posted (1) $100 final transaction and I received only (1) $45 credit today. The third card I used was not refunded the $10 so I paid $110.

How can they just change transactions like that? Thats crazy!

Did you chat with them about this or is there a more formal procedure to dispute it? Have you heard anything yet?

0/2 in SC. But I just shopped at SAMS two days ago with my dad’s Costco for access and paid with Amex… I also never got the gas station offers. Looks like these targeted offers are for people who wouldn’t shop there.

I think it’s all Amex trying to take a swing at Costco. At the end of the fine print in the Amex Offer it says “Sam’s Club is not a sponsor of this promotion.”

Are there any requirements for a business card? Saving and business card cost the same but business have more perks.

Just got a new membership with a $10 gift card at Sam’s Club. Had one in the past which expired a year ago.

Used my enrolled AMEX card, yet hasn’t received the email.

The lady at the front desk did not even bother to check the $10 email. She said that it is confusing because of the contradictory words. She just went to give me the gift card directly. I assume that it means anyone who has this email would be able to get the gift card, no matter before or after July 4th.

BTW, I did check out the Plus Membership. The lady mentioned that it is totally refundable, which means if I am not satisfied by the end of the membership, I can get $100 – $45 = $55 back. This could potentially be a money-maker.

Just enrolled. I’m looking into the T&C wording:
