What Banks & Credit Unions Do/Don’t Pull Early Warning Services?

Early warning services is a similar specialty nationwide consumer reporting agency to ChexSystems. It’s mainly used in determining if you should be approved or denied for deposit accounts, one thing a financial institution might look at is the number of recent inquiries you have on EWS report. We thought it would be useful that do and don’t pull your Early Warning Services report. We have a similar list for ChexSystems. Please contribute additional datapoints in the comments so we can continue to improve this resource page, also let us know if you’ve been denied for an account due to too many EWS inquiries.

Is this separate and mutually exclusive from chexsystems? In other words if they pull early warning, would they also pull chexsystems? Or just one or the other?

Banks that you do not have listed that pulled my EWS:
Checking account DP’s & Dates:
Santander 5/20/16
Citibank 6/8/16
US Bank 7/7/16
Suntrust 8/23/16
USAA 9/2/16 (savings acct only)
TD Bank 9/9/16
HSBC 10/1/16

Concur with Chase & Wells Fargo. BofA did NOT pull my EWS for a Savings acct.

My inquiry info is based on EWS monitoring that’s included with my identity protection service, MyIDCare. Only a few bank reported the account “open”, the rest were listed as “inquiry”.

New EWS DP’s for 2017:
BB&T pulled twice (savings and checking) for “Account Holder Information Change” (I think I updated my employment info)

PNC pulled for savings acct only app.

Here’s my data. I will know more in a month if EWS and ChexSystems allow me to do another pull of my reports. Below is based on a pull from April of this year — since then I have opened HSBC, SunTrust, Synovus, and others.

Banks that pull only at ChexSystems:
Tech CU
Alliant
GE Capital

Banks that pull only at EWS:
Regions
Chase
Wells Fargo

Banks that pull at both:
PNC
Citi

Banks that report accounts to EWS but do not do a hard or soft pull there:
Discover (did a ChexSystems pull)
Bank of America (did not pull at either ChexSystems or EWS)

If a bank is offering a promo bonus for an affinity product ($100 to open a new savings account if you already have a checking with them), do they pull chex or EWS or do they not bother?

I got denied an application to the PNC virtual wallet. I applied online and then went in person, but no one would tell me what caused me to get denied. They just gave me a list of all the reports that the bank pulls, and told me that there must have been something weird on one of them and that I should contact them.

The credit agencies they pull from are Experian and Transunion – I checked both and there should be nothing there that caused me to get denied. My credit was 769 from Experian.

PNC also pulls from Early Warning Services and ChexSystems. I called both companies and no one could tell me anything, just that I have to wait several days for the reports to come in the mail. But I am guessing that it must be something on one of these reports that got me denied, because I was recently approved for the Chase Sapphire Reserve about a month ago. So it shouldn’t be my credit.

Has anyone else had any issues getting denied from PNC? It seems my only option is to wait for the reports to come in the mail, and dispute whatever may have caused me to get denied. I do not have a history of any outstanding checks, overdrafts, overdue accounts, or anything else I can think of that should have caused this.

How many bank accounts have you opened in the last 12 months? (Note: two different accounts with the same bank will likely count as two different inquiries if they were not opened on the same day.)

Of these, how many were opened in the last two months?

Some banks get a bit nervous if a person has opened a number of accounts in the last year.

Jackson
Jackson

Hmmm well I haven’t opened any accounts at any new banks in the last 12 months, but I did in fact open up two additional savings accounts at my current bank on different days (for budgeting purposes). I wonder if this could be it? If so, do you think that if I closed the accounts, then they would cancel out the inquiries on the report, allowing me to open up the PNC account?

Thanks for the response.

CGID
CGID

Nope the inquiries are historical, a record of events in the past; actions taken in the future don’t erase them.

You’ll know a lot more when you get your EWS and Chexsystems reports, which sound like will arrive in the next week.

You also might want to consider signing up for a $1 trial of Credit Check Total, which will get you all three credit reports (TU, EX, and EQ) and the corresponding FICO 8 score. Armed with that plus your EWS and CS reports you may well be able to deduce what PNC’s concern was.

Failing that, they may assist you in getting PNC to tell you what the issue was.

I am also denied for opening PNC virtual wallet during November 2016. The reason is Early Warning Service (EWS). In EWS report for one my closed account (Huntington) the status is “Closed for cause”. It means the account got closed because of not handling the account as per bank rules. But it was closed on my request. I filed dispute with EWS and waiting for the result.

The only instant I remember with Huntington was I registered and transferred money to one of my prepaid account (Insight card). The first transfer gone through and they declined the second transfer and asked me to visit branch with the proof that the prepaid account is mine. Does transferring to prepaid account not legal or against bank rules?

travelmom
travelmom

What happened with the dispute? I’m finding myself going through the same process, just received my EWS report, and Huntington reported a checking account as “closed for cause”.

I had closed it myself about 5 weeks after opening it.

Yes i got denied by pnc and chase and they gave me a1-800 number to call i have to wait on a report back 7 years don’t know why.

Santander, PNC, BBVA Compass, HSBC all pulled for checking accounts. I opened BOA checking earlier in the year and there is no pull (would be between the others). BOA does report though, and it reported my balances from the checking opened in 2016 (prior years do not have balances). I also have MANY inquiries from Discover (no applications for any bank account-nor credit this year) Discover Cash Edge inquired-I think this was for the free credit score offer they put out. Capital One-payment card inquired as well, which very well could have been for a credit card app? It does specify payment card. It was definitely not due to a bank account opening/closing. I didn’t have any but there is apparently a “closed for cause/Purge” indicator banks can put on the report because well, they didn’t like what you were using the account for or whatever.

I have inquiries from PNC, BBVA COMPASS, SUNTRUST, TD BANK, SANTANDER, CHASE, US BANK, and HSBC from EWS via myidcare. The report from EWS directly showed a closed account from 2013 from BOA, closed account Capital one from 2014. Monthly balance information from Chase, suntrust, and wells fargo.

Just got my EWS report. I hate Citibank even more now. They made 2 inquiries, 7/31/16 and 8/02/16. this is in addition to the 3 ChexSystems inquiries, all for the same account opening. They never gave any indication that there was any problem, I don’t understand why they would make so many inquiries that affect my consumer reports.

The other inquiries on my EWS report are JPMorgan Chase (1) and Wells Fargo (1).

Hey Doc, can you maybe put a link to this page on the ChexSystems page? Thanks for all you folks do here!!

I am being denied any kind of an account, who does not check ews and checksystems?

Gadget

You probably need to look at a “second chance” account. Google it. I think applying in branch is also better for getting approved when you have “issues”. Banks get a warm fuzzy that you are legitimate when you have the “courage” to sit in the chair at the big desk.

Navy federal does pull EWS I applied for an account and they pulled it came back with BOA on it but I have a current and active checking and savings account with TD bank

Chase
Huntington
“RBS Citizens NA” = Citizens Bank (RI)

Don’t:
Associated Bank
KeyBank (Acct Denied due to Chex)

I will be pulling a Chex report soon since KeyBank denial this month. All others (besides KeyBank) were not Chex sensitive and are open and approved.

You can get your EWS report online after you call in to verify how you are. I just did it and the phone rep said it can take up yo 15 days by mail or online. You must retrieve your report from a desktop, though. iPads and laptops will not work for security reasons, good luck 🍀

Union Bank pulled EWS Oct,2017

2018 updates:

BBVA Compass – Hard pulled EWS one time for each application attempt. (The BBVA Website repeatedly showed it couldn’t confirm my identity in November, so I kept trying) Also pulled EWS again 2 days after account was opened.

BMO Harris – Soft pulled my EWS last summer, which is odd because they don’t use EWS for new accounts normally, and I don’t think I had an account with them at the time nor was I shopping them. Only a soft pull so, maybe they were shopping for new customers?

Can confirm Cap One 360 continuously reports to EWS. I don’t think I have any more updates from my previous EWS submissions.

Fulton Bank, & City National Bank WV do not pull EWS and pull Chex.

William Charles Comment https://www.doctorofcredit.com/banks-credit-unions-dodont-pull-early-warning-services/#comment-465724 never was recorded on your running list – Huntington and Citizens Bank PA/RI etc does pull EWS.

One thing really nice about the EWS report, it lists the reported close date. Citi, Chase, WF (among others) are listed, so I can tell exactly when I can churn the bonus. Also lists a Bank of America account I closed in 2013 as still being open, so I have to track that down. Interesting…. maybe I am rich?

This time I pulled my full EWS report, vice relying on my ID protection notifications. I learned some banks report to EWS every month about recent transactions and monthly balance, full RTN and Acct number. However, some only do the hard pull upon account opening and report nothing else. Also, hard pulls drop of EWS after a year, so HSBC and Santander, have nothing on my report.

Gadget
Gadget

I retract my comment about BMO Harris soft pulling my EWS – my report said Harris Bank, and it was the only Harris bank I have dealt with. Turns out it was Harris Trust and Savings Bank, which is the underlying bank WiseBanyan uses. I setup ACH around that time from another EWS bank.

William Charles
DoC, Huntington and Citizens Bank still need to be added above as EWS banks. I know, I am needy.

Basically any bank that uses Zelle uses EWS. Very few exceptions (M&T, Key Bank). List of Zelle banks is at https://www.zellepay.com/get-started

Wow. That’s interesting. Thanks.

It is possible to limit the shared of some of this information with EWS? I noticed the information about balances and ACH transfers on my report as well.

For example, here’s Chase’s privacy notice:
https://www.chase.com/resources/jpm/resource-privacy

Does this information fall under “For our affiliates’ everyday business purposes – information about your credit worthiness”?

Gadget
Gadget

It does seem a bit excessive to be to be reporting that much information. However, I think it falls under credit bureaus and the first line on their privacy policy, business purposes. Seems like some of the ews banks do extensive reporting and others only do inquiries, but I’m guessing that’s a bank decision.

If you really want to get an answer I would contact EWS first so you can get the proper lingo and terms, then contact the bank(s). If you have any success please post results.

Jesse
Jesse

I’m considering joining NFCU and was hoping to be safe from this privacy invasion. I know they pull EWS, but does NFCU actually report account information on an ongoing basis (ACH, monthly balance history, etc?)

Gadget
Gadget

No, NFCU does not report details. I have had an account for about 20 years, and my EWS doesn’t even mention NFCU. They aren’t my primary bank, but I always maintain some sort of balance.

Robert
Robert

Did you end up contacted them regarding the Bank of America account? I noticed an old account that has been closed for many years, but it doesn’t show any closing date. Not sure if it will ever drop off.

Gadget
Gadget

Yes, I did end up going through the EWS error reporting process using directions on their website. First, I contacted Bank of America to make sure the account was closed on their end. Then I wrote up a quick letter stating when I closed the account and requested it be removed. Don’t recall if I had to fax or scan and upload to their portal. One thing I didn’t like is they do not provide any sort of confirmation that they’ve received your information and if they are working on it. About a month or 6 weeks after submission, I got a mailed letter back and a full copy of my report with the BofA account removed and about six BBVA inquiries taken out.

Robert
Robert

Do you know how long an account is supposed to stay on the report after it has been closed?

Gadget
Gadget

No. I put in my letter something to the effect of requesting it to be removed if it’s outside their reporting guidelines. I know ews inquiries are held for a year. Looks like Bank of America doesn’t report the closure so it never goes away.
