Bertolli Olive Oil Class Action Settlement – $0.75-$1.75 Per Product

Bertolli Olive Oil Settlement

If you purchased certain Bertolli olive oil products you might be entitled to part of a class action settlement. A lawsuit alleged that products were inappropatively labeled as “Imported from Italy” and/or “Extra Virgin.” Deoleo denies any wrong doing but has will settle the case by putting $7,000,000 into a settlement fund. You’re eligible for a portion of this if you purchased the following products in the following dates:

  • Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil, between May 23, 2010 and April 16, 2018
  • Bertolli Classico Olive Oil, between May 23, 2010 and December 30, 2015
  • Bertolli Extra Light Olive Oil, between May 23, 2010 and December 30, 2015

You can make a claim for up to five products purchased by your household, unless you submit Proof of Purchase, in which case there is no limit.

File A Claim

To file a claim submit your details here.

Important Dates

  • Submit a claim form: Must be submitted within 30 days of final approval (not yet set)
  • Deadline for requesting exclusion: July 12, 2018
  • Deadline for submitting an objection: July 12, 2018
  • Go to a hearing: August 9th, 2018

Our Verdict

These settlements take some time to actually get your money, but they are worth doing if you’re eligible. It helps keeps companies honest and also puts a few dollars in your pocket as well. Despite this not requiring proof of purchase, please do not submit a claim unless you’re actually eligible otherwise real eligible claimants will just receive a smaller share of the settlement fund and it’s also just straight up fraud.

Extra virgin? I didn’t even get one virgin when I bought my bottle of olive oil. Gonna sue now.

If they can move a golf ball thru a garden hose and saying they are a virgin, dont believe it.

Leave it to Italians to adulterate/mislabel olive oil, lol. Remember reading sbout this scam a few years ago and claimed it had happened at least since Roman times.

California Olive Ranch is by far the best olive oil value for the money, and it’s guaranteed actual extra virgin Olive Oil unlike many imported brands.

I believe it. Not surprised by this article at all.

They have prosecuted people in Italy for these crimes; just remember Don Corleone was in the “olive oil business”………

This frustrates me. It’s another case of a blatant attempt to lie and defraud consumers by companies. How can you ‘accidentally’ label something Extra Virgin when it’s not? Extra Virgin olive oil is picked entirely differently that non-extra virgin olive oil. It involves hand picking early vs. falling off of the tree over time. And ‘Imported from Italy”, are you serious? They deserve the class action lawsuit if this is the case.

Just don’t ever buy their product again, this practice is rampant within italy as well. If its not your uncle or cousin or your friends uncle/cousin/brother etc, whatever you are buying likely is not 100% authentic (cut with north african product, spanish, etc). I know a family that only produces ~500 liters/ year and always stop through if I can for a 5L can. Amazing oil from puglia can be had for 5 euro/liter in bulk. If it doesn’t “bite the tongue”, its probably not 100% authentic.

F Bertolli, and likely other large manufacturers who just haven’t been caught.

If it doesn’t “bite the tongue” — it’s also probably no better for you than canola oil.

Oleocanthal and other chemicals that give olive oil bite/flavor are often stripped by big producers (EVOO or not) to homogenize taste between batches.

Those same chemicals are likely what provides the health benefits.

There’s a book titled “Extra Virginity” by Tom Mueller that goes through many of the scams used by corporations, countries, producers, wholesalers (IE the whole supply chain.) His website also has a nice “how to buy great olive oil” section.

Their “Olive Oil Blend” is actually 80% sunflower oil; THAT’S criminal!

But they are not the only one with that practice… It is very well known that when you buy olive oil you should always check the ingredients as there are many blends that sell as olive oil while in reality only a small percentage of the bottle is actually olive oil.

Olive oil, and balsamic vinegar, is like fine wine. You have to pay well (relatively) for the good stuff. If you’re paying under $20 for a quart of EVOO it’s probably not legit. Well-aged balsamic can easily run into the triple digits. Go to a vinegar and/or olive oil tasting. You’ll be surprised how different the “good stuff” tastes.

And…EVOO should not be used for cooking.

Came here to say the same thing. Goddamn Rachael Ray and all those celebrity chefs using EVOO to do things like sear meats. Wtf? Now you can’t hardly find a recipe online that doesn’t start with, “put some olive oil in your pan.” Olive oil is for salads. For the love of God, use something with a higher smoke point to cook with.

I must not have claimed enough purchases — I only got $20.18! Is there a site (other than this one) which lists these sort of lawsuits?
